Yakinikuya Japanese BBQ is our favorite BBQ style resturant becuase of its atmosphere, and meat selections. Specifically, the beef tongue is my favorite. I can't think of another BBQ restaurant that has a thick cut of beef tongue. The Korean style short rib is absolutely amazing. I am a bbq lover and I shop for premium meats frequently, and I can tell, this is not the kind of meat you can get anywhere. Thumbs up and keep up the good job!
Taste food. BBQ, spicy chicken, bibimbap, seasfood pancake, daikon sslad, japchai all very good. The dishes are reasonably priced and not oversized. We've been back a few times.
This is one of the first places I discovered when first moving to Vancouver. It's located just off Robson which is nice. I haven't tried the bbq and normally just hit up the basic stuff. The volcano roll is extremely good , alongside with the tuna sashimi that comes with it. Service is on point as well.

went for a late dinner last night when the Jays game was on hold due to rain. thankfully there was a television in the restuarant playing the game so we didn't miss the last two innings when it started up again.
i haven't seen yukke around much so when i noticed it on the menu i had to order the bimbimbap version. raw beef, raw egg, all mixed up with rice and veggies? yes please. the dish wasn't as amazing as the ones i've eaten in korea but what can you do. i like it when the beef is more thinly sliced/minced. this was still good though
we also had the bbq. Ryu (beef tongue), special korean kalbi, and the herbed duck. everything was quite tasty but though it was marinated, you couldn't quite taste the marinated flavour once it was cooked. there was a spicy and a sweet dipping sauce available though.however every piece of meat was tender and delicious.
for all the dishes it came to around $47 before tax and tip. a bit of an expensive meal but a nice experience and treat for some good quality cuts of meat. food came out really quickly (well its not like they have to cook it) but it was sometimes difficult to wave down a server. the place was quite busy at 9:30pm on a friday evening.
Instantly welcomed with happiness by everyone. All servers looked like they loved their job.
Food - exceeded expectations
Service - probably the best service I've seen
Music - upbeat and sophisticated
I'm making it a tradition to come here once every two weeks

Let me explain my score. 5.0 for the raw meat platter, and 2.0 for the sushi. Not for quality either. For what you pay for the sushi, you get barely any sushi. One the other hand, the combos for raw meat are an amazing deal and I highly recommend you get that over any sushi available. That is the reasoning for my score.
A favorite lunch spot. Their lunch menu is excellent. Their bentos and combos never disappoint. Prices are very reasonable, portions are generous. Have always had fast friendly service at lunchtime. Must try evenings next.
One of the best lunch spot in Vancouver Downtown. I visit this restaurant often because I work in Downtown. It is a very nice venue for business lunch or casual lunch. Some times I go there by myself too. The food comes really fast for lunch time, so it suits our schedules. I like to order their bento box and set meals. Sometimes, if I have time, I order the BBQ combinations. The food quality is always consistent.
Premium meat BBQ. We ordered the Sakura combo on Friday night. It was disappointing that the sakura combo increased its pricing from $44 to $47 when we saw the menu when we got there when the corporate website still shows the lower pricing of $44. Other than that, our experience at Yakinikuya was great. The meat is of premium quality and not heavily marinated. We loved the beef tongue especially! It is also nice that the restaurant provides small Korean appetizer dishes that are refillable. Staff is welcoming and has no problem refilling appetizer dishes. Would return to satisfy BBQ cravings!
Side note: We ordered the calamari and it was not very well fried... it was rather greasy and the portions were very small. I would not recommend ordering fried food there, and just go straight to the BBQ!

Food 8/10
Service 6/10
Value 7/10
Atmosphere 7/10
What is the most important part of a BBQ? It's the quality of the meat obviously. Alot of the Japanese bbq places in Vancouver seem to have forgotten this. They sell lower quality meat for a cheaper price hoping that customers will choose price over quality. However, Yakinikuya Japanese BBQ does not disappoint. They serve high quality meat and use a great grilling system that cooks the meat evenly.
Entrance
As we were walking down Jervis street taking photos of the restaurant, the owner came out and held the door open for us. We were seated immediately because me and my partner always eat around 5:30-6:00pm when there are not that many customers. The restaurant is alot bigger than it seems from the outside. The interior of the place is clean and has a very urban feel to it. However, I felt like the exterior signs of the restaurant were very mismatched with the cool interior of the restaurant. The first time I went, I expected it to be a cheap barbecue place until I walked inside and realized alot of money had been spent on the interior to create a great atmosphere. Anyways, soon after we were seated, the waiter came by with two cups and a bottle of water. She asked "do you know how the bbq works?". We replied by saying "yeah" because we had been to this restaurant a few times before. If you say no, she will teach you the basics of the Japanese barbecue, how to grill the meat, and explain the various sauces available. Since we knew what we wanted, we quickly ordered the Sakura Combo which consists of Korean Style Kalbi 180g; Special Kalbi 120g; Negi - Tan(beef tongue) 120g; Pork Belly 120g; Pork Jowl 120g; 4 Side Dishes; 2 Miso Soups; and 2 Steamed Rice.
Service
I don't usually write about the service in it's own section but decided to do so for this restaurant because the service was so peculiar. The owner of the place(a middle aged man in glasses) and one of the waiters were superb in their customer service. They were at your table the instant they saw your hand in the air. I would have given them a 8 or a 9 point out of 10 for service is it hadn't been for the other waiters at the restaurant. At one point when the owner was on the other side of the restaurant, I had to ask for more side dishes. I looked around to make eye contact with any of the servers and waved my hand hoping that they would look at me. However all of the waiters were pacing around with their eyes fixed on the floor. It gave me the impression that they were tired and did not want to be there. Overall, this experience happened a few times that evening hence the lower score achieved by the restaurant.
Food
The combo that we ordered came out quite fast and we were grilling just several minutes after arriving at the restaurant. As always, the meat was fresh and the quality was top notch. The three sauces and the lemon salt all had their own distinctive taste and infused well with different types of meat. The pork belly and jowl tasted amazing with the lemon salt as the greasy/oily taste of the meat became refreshing with the scent of lemon. The beef tongue which has a distinctive texture was very good with the miso sauce because the strong taste of the sauce made me forget I was eating tongue! Finally the spicy and sweet sauces worked very well with the Kalbi which was tender out of this world.
Overall
The food was great, the service was on and off, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was great. In the end, it had resulted in a great dinner for me and my partner. We walked out full of protein with big smiles on our faces.
