Nice foods but seating very compact. Not comfortable in and out of table. Should reduce number of tables to make customers more comfortable. Price of foods are reasonable. Services also not too bad.
Our dinner was pretty good at Gain Wah. For the value and the pricing compared to what they charge in Richmond, the restaurant's worth checking out if you want something cheap and decent in Downtown Vancouver, and trust me, this is better than the cheap wonton noodle houses in San Francisco. I definitely keep it in mind when I was craving for late night Chinese food when I'm in the area. Next time I would be more adventurous and get something that's more of a speciality other than the generic dish like wonton soup or pork congee.
I probably walked past Gain Wah three or four times before I noticed it. In fact, I was planning to eat at a restaurant next door on this particular but it was full when I arrived and I just happened to spy this place instead. It was a happy accident as I had a very nice meal…. The place is quite a bit larger than you might guess from the unobtrusive façade and probably seats about 60 or so. It is plain, really only decorated by signs in Chinese advertising specials, and it is a little untidy, with vegetables and other items stacked on tables near the kitchen. Still, it is a comfortable and inviting sort of place and the clutter didn’t bother me at all.
Found a real gem in Chinatown. Could not believe the daily specials. Tried the beef and mushroom in black pepper sauce on rice $7.00. Sweet and sour pork chow mein $7.50. Pan fried squid with vegetables $7.95. General Tao chicken $7.95. The plates were generous, fresh and tasty. Both the daily special menu and the regular menu have a quite extensive list of dishes. With the wide selection and low prices we will be back to try something different.
They do a nice job with their meats: roast & BBQ pork, duck, squid are very tender. Portions are smaller than with other restaurants but they're also cheaper, which is great if you like ordering a variety of dishes. The interior is very dated and a bit dingy; reminds me of places we used to go to when I was a kid. Congee was very bland and thick; I ordered to go and it didn't come with any scallions or sauces for tasting which it needed.

I love Gain Wah. The proprietors are beyond friendly and always give us the best service. Having recently moved to Chinatown, it's nice to know I have somewhere close by for comfort food whenever I need it most. It's ridiculously cheap, and the mapo tofu has a bit of bitter melon in it, which is a great touch. Never change, Gain Wah.
Don't expect great ambiance, though. Looks exactly how you'd expect a Chinese greasy spoon to look.
Gain Wah is a hole in the wall restaurant in Chinatown. I came with a coworker for lunch and the quality of the food was pretty decent. Plus, it's super cheap!
This is comfort food to me! I'll definitely be back again for more! Congee is great here.
I have been coming here for years for authentic Chinese fare and the friendly owner Andrew and his great staff. They are always welcoming and remember what you order. The food is fresh and comes out quick!

Hidden Gem. This is one of those places that you don't go to unless you're a local. Visitors will just walk by because, frankly, it's a hole. This dingy-looking place has all of its menus underneath plexiglass covers on the tables. It's a cute idea but it looks cluttered and disorganised. Once you get past how the place looks, settle back and enjoy the food.
The congee comes velvety smooth and filled with good ingredients. The shredded pork goes nicely with the rice and the thousand-year-old egg adds zing.
Rice dishes come with a vegetable broth that tastes rich and deep--great for pouring into the rice.
Noodle dishes in broth also come with rich flavours, although it's a tad heavy on salt/msg. The meatballs in the dish taste a bit bland but the broth carries it. There's a ton of noodles here that taste wonderfully al dente.
Every meal goes better with a side of roasted pork. The meat is not too fatty, and nicely seasoned with a Chinese barbecue sauce. The skin isn't as crunchy as some, but not tough by any standards.
A lot of Chinese restaurants have an added perk of rude servers. No so here--each of the staff members are courteous and very willing to go the extra mile.
This is one of those gems that you wouldn't visit unless someone directed you. Go try it out--you'll enjoy it.

I think it's my first time here. I might've gone here a long time ago when the interior looked a bit different. It's a great place for food and drinks. The atmosphere is bustling and lively.

Finally we were able to make reservations at this highly sought-after restaurant during my 3rd stay in Vancouver. And it was every bit as I would expect of it.
The dish were delicately put together. Not big quantity but the quality more than make up for it. The fried tofu and dumplings were must tries. The seasonal fish was very seasoned.
The staff was very knowledgeable about the dishes and very friendly.
The only thing that was not good was while waiting outside, we were constantly harassed by the homeless. Coming from Portland OR, I was surprised how aggressive they are here in Vancouver.
Overall it is a place you don’t want to miss out when you visit Vancouver.
The name seems like a Chinese restaurant but the food tastes doesn’t like local Chinese food. Western people may like it cuz it’s for their taste to cook but if you are Asian don’t go there you won’t be satisfied with their food! Overall, they did really good job on their vibe and food and every Chinese elements
My first time at Bao Bei after hearing amazing things.
It did not disappoint at all! The food was great, my girlfriend and I shared multiple plates. The beef tartare was arguably the best in Vancouver, and the fried rice with the omelet was delicious!
If you’re looking for top notch Chinese, with great cocktails, Bao Bei is the place!
Always excellent. Mantou still as good as they were when they opened. Chili fried chicken was a surprise highlight. And great cocktails as always.
This place is killer. A unique take on Chinese cuisine. The sichuan wings and Brussels were our favorites, the dumplings and buns were great as well. The service was very good, suggesting a delicious bottle of gamay to go along. Highly recommended.
Lovely place, first time visiting in around 7 years. You pay a good price for the food but it's all top notch. The drinks are fantastic and the service is homely. Would love to go back. One thing to note is that if you have a mushroom allergy, a good number of the items on the menu will be off-limits to you.
Excellent Dim Sum with very original authentic dishes. A bit load and slow, but so tasty.
