This is a Junction meat lovers’ destination from breakfast until late dinner where generous portions of which are made part of the respective dishes ordered throughout the day. Big Breakfasts/Brunch are a specialty. Non meat eaters also have good opt-out dishes (as pictured). Friendly & fast!
SO GOOD. I work nearby, so my colleagues and I go here pretty regularly. I've tried several things off the menu (burger, club, chicken burger, fries, etc) and have never been disappointed. Their burgers and fries are especially good! Burgers have that grill/smokey flavour to them. Definitely a "greasy spoon" type of place, which I always seem to gravitate towards. I also like that they serve their pop in the can with a glass of ice. I will continue going here for sure!
Good, but not Great. This place is really good as a filling breakfast/brunch joint. It's not 'lovely' but the food pretty good and if we get up late on a Saturday I'll often think of going here for brunch.
Great food, good price. 22oz porter house w/ mushrooms and onions- of course.
Cooked perfectly.
Juicy with a little bit of fat.
And yes- I ate it all.
Apparently there were bets in the back to see if I'd finish.
I do not order more than I can eat.
Chocolate cake for dessert.
Now that's a happy ending...
Go here quite often actually. Service is great as well as the food. Recommend it to anyone who's looking for a good family-oriented restaurant. Have tried several different dishes & have never been unsatisfied. Same staff as old location as well as same great taste.
Great family resto with super friendly service. On our last visit our server said "it was a pleasure serving you" and it was most indeed genuine. Their burgers are excellent!
Review in haiku:
Neighbourhood diner
Fast service; family fare
Very large portions
Just What a Cold Day Ordered. It is what it is and that is good. Fast service, tasty food and a comfortable dining room. The burgers - diners are judged on burgers - the burgers are terrific: I always get feta cheese and hot peppers and this is a tasty combo for me.
All day breakfast is competent and a good value. The onion is a default breakfast joint for locals and rightly so.
I love me a greasy spoon meal every once in a while.Today was one of those days.Chiara and I were strolling along Dundas West in Toronto's Junction neighbourhood this morning and popped into The Purple Onion.I'd heard about this popular greasy hotspot from another friend of mine, who claims to be a regular. She's gone a number of times with her husband, her kids, with girlfriends.....to me, it sounded like a versatile place that everyone would like. And so this rainy Sunday morning, Chiara and I walked in and were directed by the busy yet pleasant hostess/server to "take a seat wherever we wanted." All the booths were taken, so we opted for a table near the window. As we sat at the table that looked like it belonged in an office cafeteria, we noticed that there were about a dozen more people who came in just after we did. All tables seemed to fill up within 5 minutes of us arriving. Popular spot for 9:40am on a Sunday morning. It was just what we wanted at that moment. The busy waitress with an ever-present coffee pot, the menu listing All-Day breakfast options and other diner comfort foods, ketchup, HP Sauce and salt and pepper shakers right on the table. What a perfect place for a morning girlish gab session. The tables were full. The coffee was hot. The French toast was tasty. Families were there with their babies in high chairs, elderly locals were reading their newspapers, young couples were nursing their hangovers from last night's partying. What a strange yet familiar mix of people who all seemed to love this greasy spoon that, once upon a time, may have been an office. (One can tell if you look carefully at the decor, structure and lay out of the place)The place isn't fancy, but the food was tasty and cheap. If you crave bacon, eggs, pancakes, French toast, home fries, sausage and all of the other breakfast delights that you can find in a traditional greasy spoon, this is your place.Apparently there are options for lunch and dinner that are just as tasty. I plan to back for more. I mean, I just have to try the steak now, right?
Originally located by the Stockyards, The Purple Onion has made itself at home in the Junction for the past couple of years. Priding itself on being both brunch spot & steakhouse, it’s not uncommon to wait for seats most Saturdays and Sundays, both early and late.
Early? The Mega Breakfast is a work of art, framed on a rather large platter. 3 pieces of Bacon and Sausage, a Pancake or French Toast, 3 Eggs, Homefries and Toast… all for only ten bucks. Don’t dig on swine? The Purple Onion’s Steak and Eggs (6 or 10 oz.) is the house special, and is served with Homefries and Toast… also for around a tenner. No meat at all you say? Three-Egg Omelets are, well, huge and made-to-order.What’s a steakhouse without a sublime burger? Those arriving a bit later in the day have options… including one heck of a Homeburger and, subsequently, one heck of a Hot-Hamburger Sandwich.
Other fare is comforting, including (but not limited to) Liver & Onions, Mixed Grills and Homemade Meatloaf… all garnished with Smashed Taters, Gravy and Slaw. The bar opens at 11am and serves-up reasonably-priced hair-of-the-dog… Caesars and pints of Craft Beer included. There had been a 2-month lull since my wife and I had last been to The Purple Onion. What for? Who knows… Luckily some neighbourhood friends reminded us how decent a diner it is.
