Great food, great service. I like that you can get your fish baked for a healthier meal.
Heard a lot about this place and wanted to go for quite some time. Tonight i finally took the plunge and have to say it is the real deal. Steak and mushy pie was quality, everything was just like they do it in "the old country". Will def be going again!
Solid fish and chips spot in North York. Went there with a couple friends. I tried the halibut with a side of slaw, decent size portion and tasted great. The slaw was really nice too! My friends tried the haddock, they seemed to enjoy it. We also picked up some shortbread cookies on our way out, they were pretty good. I’ll definitely go back for the fish and chip, also to try their pot pies!

Yes, I can see why people like this place.
We have seen blogs and reviews of top-rated fish & chips shops in Toronto, and High Street Fish and Chips is always on those lists. Today we were in the mood for something like this, and we headed over for lunch. We got there before noon on a Saturday, and only one table was occupied at the time. More diners came in as we had our meal. The decor is fairly simple, and the seating is mostly booths for four, with a few two-tops up the middle, and a larger table near the window.
We noticed the little stand on the table describing the three “Let’s Do Lunch” specials, which include an entree and coffee/tea/pop for $12.20 (dine in) or $10.20 (takeout). We chose the Haddock & Chips special (lunch portion of Battered Haddock and Chips with a small coleslaw).
Even though it was called a lunch portion, the piece of fish was a good-sized portion. The batter was relatively light, and had a really good crunch. It did have a little baking soda aftertaste, though. The fish was hot and flaky. The fries were pretty good, with a bit of crispness on the outside. The coleslaw was finely chopped, with a light mayonnaise dressing.
And there was a bottle of malt vinegar on the table. That’s a small sign of a restaurant that knows its fish & chips.
There isn't a great deal that you can say about High Street Fish and Chips Toronto. If you are in the vicinity of Lawrence Avenue East and the Don Valley Parkway around mealtime, you could do a lot worse than to head there for Halibut and chips. If you are into mushy peas, you could do a lot worse. I always take home a Mowbray pork pie which is as close to the world-famous Melton Mowbray pork pie as you can get in Toronto. We drank Irn Bru (Scottish soft drink) $3.95 and suggest that you be sure to sure to try the brown sauce. All of the main dishes come with bread, butter, homemade tartar sauce and lemon. We shared Halibut (premium Alaskan, sustainably wild caught) - Halibut ~ two and a few $28.25 and Coleslaw… creamy dressing $2.15.
Love this fish and chips place. Tucked away in a nice neighbourhood that only the real locals know about - a hidden gem! The haddock is deep fried perfectly but the chips (fries) are a bit too dry for me. The Melton Mowbray is delicious. Had it the first time and thought it was odd to eat the minced meat pie cold but it was tasty! A must try for those fish and chips lovers!
Outstanding local fish and chips restaurant featuring traditional British inspired meals. Naturally the fish and chips are what everyone comes for. Perfectly done fillets of fish, lightly battered so that they are big on flavor and taste.
Service is very friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Definitely worth the trip to find this hidden gem.
Fun times at a classic fish and chips joint that is also famous for their meat and chicken pies. One of the things I truly admired is their wild caught, sustainable seafood and fish only mandate. They even encourage you not to buy the Halibut as it is over fished. How cool. Next time I try the Sticky Toffee Pudding. I bet it rocks. A little off the beaten path but worth the adventure.
Fabulous Fish & Chips. Thought we'd try it based on John Oakley's (AM640) adverts. It was absolutely fabulous. Exceeded our expectations. Halibut was great, chips were great. Gravy was great, onion ring type skewers were great. Service was fast and friendly, especially for a busy Friday. We walked out very happy and satisfied. Definitely will return.
Great little family run fish shop. Simple and quality would be the two words I would use to describe the food. Could use a larger menu but what they offer is worth trying
Authentic neighbourhood chippy. Quaint and friendly and off the beaten path, the fish and chips at High Street is as good (or better) than anywhere else in the city. Save room for sticky toffee pudding and you won't regret it!
Excellent halibut & chips. They also sell homemade meat pies and Cornish pasties! This place is a great find!!!
Great food. Great value.
I don’t usually like fish and chips, my kids do. But I got us all dinner here and loved it.
The black pudding was really great. Best mushy peas I’ve had. And real gravy.
Can’t wait to try the haggis.
It was a very pleasant and warm experience having lunch at High Street Fish And Chips, A small home style cooking Restaurant. Simple and clean dining room with great service . I had halibut and fries, my friend had Cod and fries. The fries were done just the way I like it, long crispy sicks of white potatoes served with a large cut of fish and freshly done cold slaw, which I enjoyed very much. This little restaurant is a place I will always recommend to my family and friends to visit.
OMG this must be the best hidden gem. Get there before it gets too popular. I have been dining here every time I come back home. I have to say that since ownership changed this place is off the hook. The fish and chips is the best I have ever had. Not only is it cooked to perfection the quality of fish is above and beyond what you expect at this price point. All their fish are top quality. The owner used to be a fish monger and knows his fiah. I love this place I wish they would open more locations. This is the place to go.

We had the haddock with tattie scones along with steak and mushroom pie with gravy and chips. Everything was tasty, although the scones were a tad under seasoned (unless they are supposed to be that way?). The sticky toffee pudding was really good too! Service was lovely too. We will be going again soon!
Loved this place! Friendly service and a pretty affordable meal. 2 servings of haddock and chips with coleslaw and sticky toffee pudding for $43. The Fish was crispy although a tad over cooked. Very small portion of tartar sauce however they give you more if you ask. The sticky toffee pudding was the star by far. Will be back.
The lady who served was so nice and lovely. Food came out quick and fresh. The pie was hot and crispy with tender steak inside. The mashed potatoes was creamy and smooth. The fish fillet was flaky and fresh. Chips were crispy and creamy inside.
