Review High Street Fish And Chips - Toronto

Pierre Henry
Great food. Great value. I don’t usually like fish and chips, my kids do. But I got us all dinner here and loved it. The black pudding was really great. Best mushy peas I’ve had. And real gravy. Can’t wait to try the haggis.

Great food. Easy access. Good menu. But terrible customer service. I am a regular. We have fish and chips once a week. They gave me this coupon for 10% off, when I wanted to use it, they said it only applies to kids food and not the main meal!! We asked while ordering on the phone and they had confirmed it could be used… anyway the amount negligible, negative impression on the other hand, very much.

It was a very pleasant and warm experience having lunch at High Street Fish And Chips, A small home style cooking Restaurant. Simple and clean dining room with great service . I had halibut and fries, my friend had Cod and fries. The fries were done just the way I like it, long crispy sicks of white potatoes served with a large cut of fish and freshly done cold slaw, which I enjoyed very much. This little restaurant is a place I will always recommend to my family and friends to visit.

OMG this must be the best hidden gem. Get there before it gets too popular. I have been dining here every time I come back home. I have to say that since ownership changed this place is off the hook. The fish and chips is the best I have ever had. Not only is it cooked to perfection the quality of fish is above and beyond what you expect at this price point. All their fish are top quality. The owner used to be a fish monger and knows his fiah. I love this place I wish they would open more locations. This is the place to go.

We had the haddock with tattie scones along with steak and mushroom pie with gravy and chips. Everything was tasty, although the scones were a tad under seasoned (unless they are supposed to be that way?). The sticky toffee pudding was really good too! Service was lovely too. We will be going again soon!

Loved this place! Friendly service and a pretty affordable meal. 2 servings of haddock and chips with coleslaw and sticky toffee pudding for $43. The Fish was crispy although a tad over cooked. Very small portion of tartar sauce however they give you more if you ask. The sticky toffee pudding was the star by far. Will be back.

The lady who served was so nice and lovely. Food came out quick and fresh. The pie was hot and crispy with tender steak inside. The mashed potatoes was creamy and smooth. The fish fillet was flaky and fresh. Chips were crispy and creamy inside.

For $20 dollars you'll get a heaping load of french fries the equivalent quality and taste of Mccains from the supermarket and a single fillet of halibut. The halibut had nice batter and in general tasted good although a tad greasy, in general this was NOT worth $20

Great food, great service. I like that you can get your fish baked for a healthier meal.

Heard a lot about this place and wanted to go for quite some time. Tonight i finally took the plunge and have to say it is the real deal. Steak and mushy pie was quality, everything was just like they do it in "the old country". Will def be going again!

I have heard so much about the fish and chips on the radio I decided to give it a try. I was not very impressed. Halibut was dry and tasteless, batter was way to thick and the tarter sauce had no flavor. Ordered the fried clams and noticed for 9.99 I got inferior frozen product. Later after eating I asked if it was original owner and was told no. I guess things do change

Good food but way overpriced I have never paid $17.95 for halibut and chips...I've had better!

Best in the area!

Waited an hour and 25 minutes. Given that it's Good Friday they should've brought reinforcements at the back of the kitchen. Running out of 2 types of fish on the busiest day of the year is unacceptable. Don't even care how good it is because I've waited so long!

Just had excellent Haddock and Chips High Street, alongwith Bread & Butter and a Pot Of Tea :-) ...........followed by Lemon Posset and Shortbread. Absolutely Spiffing !!!

Very nice, Fish & Chips, in fact one of the best in the city.

Went to High Street for the first time and had the cod and chips. It was delicious and the portions are huge! Service was swift and friendly. Highly recommend High Street to everyone!

Just gorged ourselves with copious amounts of fish, chips and... pretty much one of everything. The halibut is perfect for takeout; the fried onion thing was sweet and crispy; and the tatty scones were a revelation - it's like a pancake, but it's a potato - HIGHLY recommend… We still have a melton mowbray and desserts for later...

We go here quite a bit and love the food. I took a friend here for lunch, yesterday and ordered take out for my husband. I don't know what went wrong but we all got sick. Stomach pains and frequent trips to the bathroom. It's never happened before. The food was greasier than usual. Maybe it was a bad batch or the oil was bad. I'm sad because we usually love this restaurant.

Good fish and chip

Best fish and chips ever!

Solid fish and chips spot in North York. Went there with a couple friends. I tried the halibut with a side of slaw, decent size portion and tasted great. The slaw was really nice too! My friends tried the haddock, they seemed to enjoy it. We also picked up some shortbread cookies on our way out, they were pretty good. I’ll definitely go back for the fish and chip, also to try their pot pies!

2018/03/31
Yes, I can see why people like this place.

We have seen blogs and reviews of top-rated fish & chips shops in Toronto, and High Street Fish and Chips is always on those lists. Today we were in the mood for something like this, and we headed over for lunch. We got there before noon on a Saturday, and only one table was occupied at the time. More diners came in as we had our meal. The decor is fairly simple, and the seating is mostly booths for four, with a few two-tops up the middle, and a larger table near the window.

We noticed the little stand on the table describing the three “Let’s Do Lunch” specials, which include an entree and coffee/tea/pop for $12.20 (dine in) or $10.20 (takeout). We chose the Haddock & Chips special (lunch portion of Battered Haddock and Chips with a small coleslaw).

Even though it was called a lunch portion, the piece of fish was a good-sized portion. The batter was relatively light, and had a really good crunch. It did have a little baking soda aftertaste, though. The fish was hot and flaky. The fries were pretty good, with a bit of crispness on the outside. The coleslaw was finely chopped, with a light mayonnaise dressing.

And there was a bottle of malt vinegar on the table. That’s a small sign of a restaurant that knows its fish & chips.

Ordered take-out 2 halibut, 1 chip and coleslaw for $35.##. Surprisingly with the review of 4.2, me and my 12 year old son were disappointed with the amount, package etc. We didn't see any special but pricey. Won't go again.

There isn't a great deal that you can say about High Street Fish and Chips Toronto. If you are in the vicinity of Lawrence Avenue East and the Don Valley Parkway around mealtime, you could do a lot worse than to head there for Halibut and chips. If you are into mushy peas, you could do a lot worse. I always take home a Mowbray pork pie which is as close to the world-famous Melton Mowbray pork pie as you can get in Toronto. We drank Irn Bru (Scottish soft drink) $3.95 and suggest that you be sure to sure to try the brown sauce. All of the main dishes come with bread, butter, homemade tartar sauce and lemon. We shared Halibut (premium Alaskan, sustainably wild caught) - Halibut ~ two and a few $28.25 and Coleslaw… creamy dressing $2.15.

Love this fish and chips place. Tucked away in a nice neighbourhood that only the real locals know about - a hidden gem! The haddock is deep fried perfectly but the chips (fries) are a bit too dry for me. The Melton Mowbray is delicious. Had it the first time and thought it was odd to eat the minced meat pie cold but it was tasty! A must try for those fish and chips lovers!

Outstanding local fish and chips restaurant featuring traditional British inspired meals. Naturally the fish and chips are what everyone comes for. Perfectly done fillets of fish, lightly battered so that they are big on flavor and taste.

Service is very friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Definitely worth the trip to find this hidden gem.

Fun times at a classic fish and chips joint that is also famous for their meat and chicken pies. One of the things I truly admired is their wild caught, sustainable seafood and fish only mandate. They even encourage you not to buy the Halibut as it is over fished. How cool. Next time I try the Sticky Toffee Pudding. I bet it rocks. A little off the beaten path but worth the adventure.

Patricia Manahan. Think the fish and chips are good. However, I believe the shop should offer half servings for those who cannot eat a full order.
Oddjob
Fabulous Fish & Chips. Thought we'd try it based on John Oakley's (AM640) adverts. It was absolutely fabulous. Exceeded our expectations. Halibut was great, chips were great. Gravy was great, onion ring type skewers were great. Service was fast and friendly, especially for a busy Friday. We walked out very happy and satisfied. Definitely will return.

Never Failed Me Yet. I have been excited about this place since the first day I went. I take everyone I know, specially if they're of British descent. The food is hot, quick, and delicious. The wait staff are pleasant and fast. Everything is spotless. It's great to know where the food comes from and that it is sustainable sources. What more could one ask? Ah, the clientele are plentiful, older and quiet. Very pleasant and don't let's forget the sticky toffee pudding - their recipe. To die for.....

A wonderful dining experience, the absolute best fish & chips that I've had in Toronto for a long time if ever and the halibut, wonderful flavour, texture and batter. If you think your hungry and need a double order think twice, their single portion is like a double most other places. Try it, you won't be disappointed .

Mushy Peas. Their mushy peas are the best I have found to date.

Great little family run fish shop. Simple and quality would be the two words I would use to describe the food. Could use a larger menu but what they offer is worth trying

Inconsistent. I have been there several times. The first couple of visits it was great. Then I noticed things seemed to change every time we went. On one outing the batter was very oily and made me ill that night. The tattie scones always seem to look different. I'm feeling like the all the original love have gone out of this place. I think I will stick to the fish and chips stores closer to home.

Authentic neighbourhood chippy. Quaint and friendly and off the beaten path, the fish and chips at High Street is as good (or better) than anywhere else in the city. Save room for sticky toffee pudding and you won't regret it!

High Street Fish & Chips - better elsewhere. I found this restaurant lacking in atmosphere. The food was OK but you didn't feel you were cross the pond.
The walls were bare - devoid of ornamentation or decoration. St Andrew's and Highland both on Ellesmere Rd have better atmosphere.

Excellent halibut & chips. They also sell homemade meat pies and Cornish pasties! This place is a great find!!!

We began with the haddock, which arrived as one large battered filet, with chips and tartar sauce on the side. The batter on the fish was light and crunchy, and the chips hot and deliciously crispy. Although fish and chips is in High Streets’ name, I could not resist getting a meat pie (also available frozen), which they make with their own pastry. The pie crust was flaky, and filled with chunks of steak and mushroom.

When I finally got to taste the sticky toffee pudding, I was floored and was in love with the taste! I thought it would be overly sweet but it was just right. I literally scraped the bowl with my spoon hoping for more. The following day, I went back again with my sister and had another serving of that sticky toffee pudding. Do I have to convince you more how good it was?

High Street is a hidden gemstone in the Parkwoods area. How I heard about this place was from Dan's friend by word of mouth. I wish Dan took me here a lot earlier. I rate this place 5.0/5.0. Whenever I think "Fish and Chips" I think "High Street". It's a funny restaurant name, "High Street". After consuming my meal, I was in a what I would like to describe, "Extra Silly" mood. I started cracking up stupid jokes and did a little dance later on in Valumart when no one was looking. Then I realized it was probably the Omega Acids kicking in.

I walked in the restaurant at 3:30 pm. Well past the lunch rush, I was the only customer inside. The restaurant was a decent size, spacious booths and airy windows. I specifically found their entry way endearing, with a welcome message that gave comfort. One would not miss the owner’s Scottish heritage as I continued to look around. As I was the only lone customer for the moment, I naturally chose a table by the window. Looking through their menu, I opted for what they said that had made their regulars keep on coming back, Haddock and Chips. I couldn’t resist ordering their onion thingy, It was literally named that way and turned out to be onions deep fried with batter and skewered on a stick. The server asked me if I wanted a substitution of the onion thingy for the fries. Whimsically, I told her I would want both.
I figured it was my way to pat myself on the back for surviving such a hectic schedule.
The wait was not too long and the onion thingy and the fish and chips arrived together. For a while I was repentant of my whimsy. But that was before I tasted both the fries and the onion thingy. I wouldn’t have known how to choose between the two. The fries were just the way I liked it, crunchy on the outside and mushy on the inside. The onions meanwhile were crispy to bite and was perfectly sweet on the inside. Going for the fish, it was just a crispy as the onions, the batter light and the fish flaked off beautifully. Sweet and fresh to the taste, the haddock satisfied this hungry foodie.

All the food before me perked me up and gave me my second wind. When I was full, I was not ready to go. For some reason, I was compelled to have dessert. They have three on their menu, sticky toffee pudding, shortbread cookies and apple cinnamon. As I haven’t tried sticky toffee pudding before, I chose it despite my love for shortbread cookies. I was prudent to ask which was better but the server told me she cannot say what for me to choose as both of them were good.

If you find yourself close to DVP and Lawrence, do make this pit stop and at least have a taste of this sticky toffee pudding. Only then you would understand why I was there two days in a row.
