Master Hung Bbq

My brothers and I are terrible at planning Mother’s Day. We either disagree on what restaurant to eat at until it’s too late to get reservations, or we attempt to cook a meal for our mom and have something go horribly wrong (“No, no…the crepes are supposed to be charred, mom”). But this year I thought I had it all figured out. My brothers and I would throw a high tea party for my mom and our grandmothers. It’s pretty hard to screw up tea sandwiches, right? Unfortunately we’ll never know, because the week before Mother’s Day I accidentally took my mom and grandmothers for high tea without thinking. Doh! We couldn’t do another high tea in the same week! So what do you do when it’s only a few days to Mother’s Day and and you have no dinner reservation and don’t want to burn the house down?

My friends and I went on a study abroad together to China last summer. To celebrate our friendship, and being done with Chinese class for the quarter, we decided to go out for some good Chinese food.

We were originally going to go to another restaurant in Richmond, but after doing some looking here on US, I found Master Hung's. It was the cheapest option, was open late, and was the highest rated Chinese place in Richmond.

Finding it wasn't difficult, however; parking is limited. I suggest going later in the evening when the adjacent medical clinic is closed, and their parking available.

We walked into a restaurant full of Chinese people, and a smell that brought us all the way back to China. We were told a 5 minute wait, and the host brought us menus. When we asked if we could use American cash (they only take cash), he replied "Uhhh... okay! Sure." Which we really appreciated! Though, next time we'll be sure to bring Canadian.

We were seated in 5 minutes, and we ordered the 3 person combination meal. We got the BBQ platter (duck, and two kinds of pork), a chicken/tofu/salty fish hot pot, and Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce. The combination meal didn't come with rice, which was weird. But we ordered some, and it was very cheap.

They first brought out the most AMAZING tea we've ever had. It had rose hips in it, and almost brought my friend Lisa and I to tears with nostalgia.

The meal came with a fantastic soup, very light.
The BBQ came out first, and it blew us away. It is the restaurant's specialty. And they don't disappoint. The duck was sweet and game-y, and crispy on the outside. And the fat was completely soaked into the meat. The pieces in the middle of the duck on the plate were more concentrated with sauce and fat, so I recommend starting with that, and working your way out.

The pork was amazing as well. I don't know which was BBQ and which was roasted, but they were both great. One was sweet, and I thought it might have been an organ. It was creamy, and very dark. The other variety was layered; the meat tender, the fat melted in your mouth, and the skin was crunchy! The platter came with sauces, but I didn't need them at all!

The Chinese broccoli was very hot, and came in huge pieces. They were very garlic-y, and surprisingly rich. I recommend ordering something acidic or fresh as a contrast, because the taste was so strong. Very tasty, though.

And the hotpot was something none of us were expecting. We deduced that it was a lot of stinky tofu/stinky fish with some chicken in broth. I'm sure it was very good for what it was, and I actually liked it. It was just a bad match with the other food we ordered. It would go well with something sweet or fruity.

We were checked on the right amount, and even got to speak a little Chinese with the staff. They were very friendly, and encouraged us by speaking in Chinese with us. In fact, we had one lady we had to ask to slow down! And when we had some confusion over how much to pay (because of the currency conversion) it was good we knew Chinese, because our server couldn't speak English. And then, she complimented us a dessert, a sort of sweet barley soup. Also very good. Oh and more rose tea! :D

I highly recommend this place! Bring Canadian cash, and learn some Chinese. Other than us, there was only one other waiguo (Chinese for foreigner) in the place. If you can't speak it though, don't worry. The host speaks English, and is very eager to serve!

Its one of my "A" list restaurant. When i first went in, i doubt that it would be good but never know until we try. if u love lean meats with some delicious fat, must order roast pork. must order vermicelli beef with satay sauce (i think its the name). i would go there for more other food!

This is one of the best Chinese BBQ I've had in Vancouver. I am definately going back!

The roast pork was amazingg!! Thr skin was super crunchy and crispy, with just the right amount of fat.

Master Hung is rather famous in the Chinese community for its delectable Chinese BBQ dishes. I've heard good things about the restaurant from several family friends, so I happily seconded Sab's suggestion to dine here last night. Luckily she had made a reservation several days before, because the place was packed full and all walk-in customers were turned away. The best deal on the menu was the set combo with a choice of 2 to 10 dishes and complimentary soup and dessert: - combo for two ($23.80) - combo for three ($35.80) - combo for four ($47.20) - combo for five ($59.00) - combo for six ($70.80) - combo for seven ($82.60) - combo for eight ($94.40) - combo for nine ($106.20) - combo for ten ($118.00) We decided to get the combo for four ($47.20) since 4 dishes would be more than enough for the 5 of us.
