We have reached July which means we have reached time to celebrate my birthday. As I have gotten older, I have gone away from a party to celebrate. I prefer just a nice dinner with friends either home or at the restaurant. The challenge, as always, is to find somewhere that works for a group – where we can easily share and where the cost to my friends is reasonable. I hate forcing my friends to splurge at my expense. Well, for this year, I decided to stay close to home in Verdun to try our hand at some Cambodian cuisine at Les Street Monkeys.
A flavour explosion! They don’t hold back on the spices and great Asian flavours. All dishes were well-executed - those lamb chops were perfectly cooked! Definitely will return again and again!
The good
The service is very courteous and efficient.
Food is delicious!
We ordered:
Chicken wings stuffed with thai sausage, which were absolutely delicious! A perfect balance of sweet and savoury crispy skin and warm stuffing with a distinct lemongrass taste it was one of our favourite. We ordered 2 of this dish because they come only 3 wings by plate and were 4 people. They only have a certain amount of wings plates served by night and they are very popular so make sure you order at least 2 of these beauties they are perfection!
Shrimps in curry and coconut milk sauce with sautéed vegetables. The shrimps were cooked to perfection and they were really big! The sauce was delicious with a nice kick of spicy but the vegetables were a bit overcooked.
Beef skewers! One of the best choices!!! They were marinated with lemongrass galang and sugar cane and were just delicious! The three skewers in the portions will leave you wanting more and more. Next time we will order 2 portions of these gems!
As suggested by our waiter to ordered the fried papaya salad medium spice (they can do it no spice, medium or hot) medium spice was a bit hot for my taste but everybody else found it perfect so I guess Im a bit of a wuss for spicy food.
Either way I devoured because it was extremely good! Short strings of green papaya fried but not greasy mixed with carrots bean sprouts and cherry tomatoes. The vinaigrette was made with fish sauce, fermented fish paste, lime, tamarind dry shrimps, peanuts and a very fiery little red pepper which I believe are called bird pepper.
Our Cambodian friend suggested that we absolutely ordered the Amok fish dish and she was right! It was worth it! Lightly breaded cod pieces that where crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside, served on a mild red curry sauce with coconut milk accompanied by little pieces of red pepper and tiny crispy taro shoestrigs fries.
Another dish our Cambodian friend suggested was the Saiko Teuk Prahok whish was rare beef thinly sliced with a sauce of fermented fish paste eggplant, galang and coriander. This dish was well executed but it is an acquired taste. She loved it but the rest of us decided to stick to our previous selections.
Sticky rice and jasmin rice both very well executed and perfect as compliment to all the other dishes.
Wine list is short but it has good choices and prices are not to high for either bottles of wine or food.
The cocktails are very creative you are certain to find something exiting to try. My Cambodian friend had the thai massage cocktail which was a bit sweet for my taste but she loved it. If Im not mistaken it had belvedere, aperol, bailys, thai tea, condensed and evaporated milk.
The bathrooms are very spacious and clean but there are only two.
Parking is quite easy.
The bad
Although is a tapas style restaurant we found the portion were a bit on the small side.
The ugly.
Nothing.
