My friends often refer to this place as the "Vietnamese Fried Chicken on Tomato Rice" place. They should just rename themselves to that. Or say "Hoa An - Home of VFC". To me, it tastes like traditional HK-style fried chicken I had when I was a kid. But to my Chinese/Vietnamese friends it is Vietnamese Fried Chicken - fair enough :) Everyone's got a place they call home, right?
My other friend calls it the Tom Yum Pho place and since I'm not a fan of the Tom Yum soup I'll leave it at that.
The chicken is absolutely amazing. Perfectly seasoned with salt, MSG, star anise, etc. Usually it comes with one chicken for $13 but I felt rich one day and I ordered an extra piece of chicken for $5 more. After tax and tip the bill came to be about $20. Thinking back to the taste and portion, $20 was worth it but extravagant for a Chinatown meal. Meh. YOLO!
Best phō in Edmonton hands down. Great service too. #21 is amazing. Spring rolls are also best in town. I go once a week. Can't wait to go back!
Quick service, good food. The main reason we pick this restaurant over other pho restaurants is the quick service. You can order and be eating in only a few minutes. The food is good with no complaints. (I've only ever had pho noodle soup though) One minor issue is that the meats described on the menu may not match up with the ones actually served. The prices are reasonable.
The restaurant owner is really loud and open, but I've never had a problem with her. It's just her personality. The one waitress (only one I've seen?) isn't exactly friendly, but she does her job well nonetheless. Would recommend for a quick satisfying meal.
Ask owner to see Vietnam pix books while U wait. Chicken curry could've been a tad spicier but was good. Deep fried won tons were good. I'd go back.
Have Enjoyed for Years. I'm a little surprised at the negative reviews for this restaurant - our experience has been the opposite and we've been there numerous times. The lady running the place always remembers us and greets us. She even remembers what we usually eat, including the homemade chili sauce that I like. My husband has tried a couple of the soups, which he enjoyed, but we often stick to the vermicelli bowls with pork, spring rolls and shrimp, which we've always found to be excellent. On our most recent visit, we did find the prices increased again. At $11.95 for our fave vermicelli bowl, the price is high enough, but nevertheless, always fresh and tasty.
The décor is colourful - probably not to everyone's taste - but the restaurant is always clean and neat. Yes, the owner(?) lady is a little loud and opinionated, but she's always been good with us. Recommended!
Fantastic broth!. I always order pho with the standard broth and all the available meats and this place gets the classic dish right! The accompanying dish of bean spouts, lime, basil leaves and hot peppers was also stacked unlike some of the off-Chinatown pho places.
Best Pho in the city!. My husband and I are addicted to this place! Unlike some of the reviews on here we love the service! The people there are always smiling and happy to see us, and get us whatever we need. They are delightful, and the food is absolutely amazing.
The #22 is our favorite, its just so good we go back several times a month. They know us there, seeing as we are regular customers and know exactly what we order before we even have to tell them. Its always nice and quiet and they have Chinese drama TV shows playing all the time! Its good to zone out on hehe.
My favourite Vietnamese restaurant. Unlike some other reviews, I have never had a problem with the servers. In fact they are one of the reasons I liked the place so much. The menu has a selection of pho, rice dishes, spring/ salad rolls, etc. Prices are good. I find their pho the best Iv'e tried in the city. I'm addicted to the Thai style seafood pho? (not quite sure of name, but it says THAI style). I really crave this dish sometimes. Other noodle soups are good, and Iv'e only had one rish dish before but the portion was large and food was good. Iv'e always had great service which made me feel like they appreciated my business their.
Just go for food, not for service. The best vietnamese for pho, but I can definitely reiterate the fact that the owner woman is super rude and she gets very mad if you try to pay with anything but cash, even though they accept Visa. I like that they don't automatically put in cilantro in all their food, but over the last 10+years we've been going, we noticed there is no longer any tendon in the soup even though it's described in the menu. That kinda sucks if you like tendon, which I do.
their Chicken fried rice is also one of the best ever.
The meal comes out piping hot and oddly frothy, the frothiness, I can’t explain, but it dissipates after I sit and let the bean sprouts cook. The broth is a rich reddish colour and is very basic with just green onions and some peanuts swimming in it. The broth has a rich savoury flavour to it, there is a nice sweetness and a bit of a spicy kick to it. Overall, the portion for the large serving is somewhat average to other places regular serving, but for the price, it’s almost on par to any of the non-Chinatown Vietnamese restaurants.
