Urban Diner has been around for a long time and is a pretty sold staple in the Westmount breakfast scene. Serving up American-style grub, they do it in just the right way which makes everything somehow perfect. They were even featured on the first season of You Gotta Eat Here! There was a point in time when they had a second location south of the river that has since closed, but honestly all you need is the original. While they do remain open until 8pm each night and have a great menu for lunch and dinner fare, what you really want is the brunch (served on weekends and holidays). Brunch is where it's at.

I arrived first thing on a rainy Saturday morning. I had hoped to sit out on the lovely patio out back but the weather had different ideas. Instead we took a table indoors and were seated by a friendly staff member. The space is somewhat large with different seating areas within the dining room, all centered around the kitchen as a focal point. There are tables and booths collected within a decor that is simple and easy-going. The restaurant is laid-back and reliable.
I started my meal with a warm cup of Red Rose tea, just the small caffeine boost that I'd been craving. Like most brunch offerings, the menu consists of items that are more like breakfast as well as items that are more like lunch. They also post their specials on a chalk board above the kitchen window (I once found a Beef Brisket Benny on the specials menu that blew my mind). But today was going to be about the classics. There are four items on the Sweet Tooth section of the menu but you only need one: Dutch Poffertjes (Little dollar sized pancakes with icing sugar. Served with chocolate sauce & orchard fresh syrup for dipping. 12 per order - $8.00). I'm pretty sure that if they ever took these off of the menu that the restaurant would just shut down. Each pancake really is hardly bigger than a toonie, making them extremely easy to pop into your mouth, devouring each and every one. Cooked to a fluffy perfection each tiny pancake is golden brown with a light crisp on the outside while remaining soft on the inside. The warm chocolate sauce is especially sensual to dip into. If Urban Diner has a signature dish, it's probably this (or maybe the breakfast burger made with meatloaf instead of a patty). Also, look no further for an ideal kid-friendly plate.

Can we just talk about the music at Urban Diner for one second? Because it was the ACTUAL BEST. They were playing the best 80s hits and each song was better than the last. I probably spent more time dancing in my chair than eating my food. What a great way to start the day!
I do have a favourite dish to order and it's from the Mains section of the menu. I've ordered it many times before and I ordered it again on this occasion: Diner Hash (Corned beef, potato, caramelized onion, hollandaise, poached egg - $15.00). I don't know what it is about a dish like this but it just speaks to me. I was given a choice of different types of bread as an accompaniment and chose the sourdough. I was also asked how I wanted my eggs cooked and requested them "medium." For me, this plate takes what's good about eggs benedict and sends it in a different and delicious direction. The crispy golden potatoes are tossed in a savoury mix of sweet onions and tender, flavourful corned beef. The eggs are just runny enough and the whole thing is drenched in hollandaise sauce. Everything tastes fresh and homemade. Even the bread on the side (which is normally no more than an afterthought) was soft, warm, and clearly baked in-house. The jam on the side? Definitely homemade. This relatively simple dish is an explosion in comfort. Somehow Urban Diner takes their classic plates up those few extra notches which elevates the entire experience.

I've been to this restaurant many times before in the past and there is something to be said about the places that stay exactly the way that you remember them over the years. Urban Diner is consistent. The food is just as delicious as the first time that I tasted it. They are truly able to provide a sense of "coming home" and that's a beautiful thing.

Great food and exceptional service. Expect it to be busy, but it’s worth the wait. You won’t eat like this at a chain! Support your local businesses!

I am in absolute disbelief that I have not rated this place yet. I’ve been coming here for brunches since I was old enough to go to brunch. Urban diner is a must go for brunch in Edmonton. A quaint little diner in a quiet corner of downtown. urban diner is a wondrous place of many delights, from their mac & cheese, brunch menu and the variety of pies and desserts they have. The service is always on top and very friendly. Summer brunch is the best on their patio with their fresh brewed iced teas. Must try menu items Huevos breakfast burrito, sour cream pie, and the vegetarian bennies. I’ve also had a pastrami eggs Benedict that was the feature of the day which was also absolutely amazing, you need to try their hashbrowns and fresh orange juice. You must come here at least once in your life... or twice... or ten

We came for breakfast or brunch on a Friday. It was busy but we still found free parking and didn't have to wait. My classic breakfast was very good but not unique. The jam however was delicious and likely made in house. I'd come back for just toast and jam because it was so good. The others at our table were very satisfied with their choices. The only negative was the service. Our waitress didn't seem to enjoy her work. The others seemed to be much better and even covered for her. It happens. I recommend Urban Diner.

An edmonton classic. Great brunch, sandwiches and the poutine is beyond words. Especially the brisket. I would also recommend trying any of their desserts. The banoffee pie is insane, as well as the 5 layer chocolate torte. Will continue to visit regularly!

Great place to chow down on some classic diner eats. Their mac and cheese is delicious.... they use cavatappi instead of the typical elbow macaroni, and it's always cooked perfectly al dente. Yesterday I tried their grilled chicken sandwich. It was simple and tasty. The artichoke, basil, and tomato "salsa" on the sammi really elevated the flavour profile. What I don't understand is why they got rid of their chorizo burger.... it was one of the best things on the menu, and was featured on You Gotta Eat Here. They haven't had it on the menu for years now and I don't know why!!!

Just awesome. This is one of those hipster diners, not a traditional greasy spoon, but its a good one, and it doesn't get so hipster that it ceases to have the humble and low-key touch that you come to expect and appreciate from a diner. But being a little bit more hip than your neighborhood greasy spoon the food is more conscientiously prepared. Its quite high quality, especially for the price point, which isn't at all expensive. they have interesting rotating menu items, but the regular food is on point to. lots, if not all of the ingredients are prepared in house and it shows, it is very fresh food. as a side note, they dress the fries with a really zesty seasoning. I am not really sure what it is, some kind of citrus infused salt I think, but its delicious and it is so cool when a place takes a staple like fries and puts a good spin on them.
the atmosphere and decor is really good too. definitely in keeping with the diner appeal. it has a very community feel that I think is amplified if you live walking distance from it, but in general I think it would be a good place to go on a date or with an old pal to catch up, there's just something very familiar, intimate, casual, and comfy about the place.
I was inclined at first to give a 4.5 rating to urban diner, but upon giving it some though there wasn't actually anything I can complain about, or reasonably criticize with the place. I think the food could obviously be better but I think at the price its as good as you can get, if you want better than this you are stepping up a price bracket. Yet there are places much steeper than urban diner that come in far behind in food quality. Its hard to get this kind of value for your dining these days. Its a great eatery and I highly recommend it!

Always get this place mixed with high level diner... Nevertheless... Located in a nice part of downtown Edmonton. Fair prices, decent, typical diner type food. The hash browns are pretty freaking scrumptious!

Amazing downtown restaurant! I highly recommend their Huevos - definitely an in-house specialty! The food is always amazing and and incredibly fast! Well worth the drive into downtown.

My family went to experience the Sunday Brunch at Urban Diner and we were not disappointed! We ordered 2 of The Classic one with meatloaf and the other with bacon and the Back Bacon Benny. The meatloaf is scrumptiously delicious paired with the scrabbled eggs and the crunch of the potatoes..omg so yummy!!! Oh I can't forget about the homemade fruit jam to spread over the sourdough toast! Bursting with fruity flavors yum! BUT the Back Bacon Benny was made perfectly soft yolk bursting over the back bacon was so flavorful!! A must to visit again!!

This is a lovely little diner with fast friendly staff, a decently varied menu and a pretty neat location. Their prices are good, especially for a citywide infamous diner, and the portions are AMAZING! My only qualm is, unfortunately, with their famous meatloaf; if you're not necessarily a meatloaf lover (like myself), then you might not enjoy some of their menu options. Their meatloaf is very well seasoned and has a very prominent taste that stands out from everything else that they serve (in a good way, in my opinion). It works well with some dishes, if it's the main ingredient (like with their 'Mom's Meatloaf' sandwich), but paired along with other ingredients in dishes like their 'Breakfast Burger', it can be very overwhelming. The 'Breakfast Burger' sandwich consists of: Ham, crispy bacon, meatloaf, fried egg, cheddar and roasted red pepper aioli. However, despite all of the lovely ingredients listed above, the only thing I found myself tasting was the meatloaf. It definitely wasn't a bad taste but, again, if you're not a big meatloaf lover, menu options with or starring their meatloaf probably won't be a great experience for you. That's honestly the only thing that kept me from rating this place five stars, because other than that, this really is an awesome joint to stop by for breakfast/brunch/lunch. I hope my review can help someone who's dropping by there for the first time!

Solid experience all around. Not pretentious, but good quality food in a comfortable atmosphere. The brunch is heavy on meats and carbs, but sometimes that's just what you're looking for. Love the breakfast potatoes and the chicken and waffles is absolutely worth it! Try it with the hot sauce 😉👍
