Review Urban Diner - Edmonton

Ernest Hui
Always get this place mixed with high level diner... Nevertheless... Located in a nice part of downtown Edmonton. Fair prices, decent, typical diner type food. The hash browns are pretty freaking scrumptious!

Update: Urban Diner reached out to me on IG and let me know they do have a kids menu it is just not printed and the server forgot to offer it, so just ask for the kids menu and they will let you know what they offer. They posted a photo of their beef dip on their Instagram page and I had to try it. I get to their restaurant order the beef dip and something comes out that looks nothing like what they advertised. All fake marketing aside, the sandwich was pretty good, not the best beef dip I have ever had but definitely not the worst. The atmosphere wasn't great. Definitely has diner vibes but due for a bit of an update. The restaurant was clean though and very busy for a Wednesday afternoon (so they have to be doing something right). They do not have a kids menu, but my boy was good with me ordering a side of fries and a side of fruit. The server was great, not super chatty, but always made sure we were taken care. I don't know if I would be back for lunch or dinner, but being a diner I might have to come back and try their breakfast which they serve every day till 3PM.

Amazing downtown restaurant! I highly recommend their Huevos - definitely an in-house specialty! The food is always amazing and and incredibly fast! Well worth the drive into downtown.

My family went to experience the Sunday Brunch at Urban Diner and we were not disappointed! We ordered 2 of The Classic one with meatloaf and the other with bacon and the Back Bacon Benny. The meatloaf is scrumptiously delicious paired with the scrabbled eggs and the crunch of the potatoes..omg so yummy!!! Oh I can't forget about the homemade fruit jam to spread over the sourdough toast! Bursting with fruity flavors yum! BUT the Back Bacon Benny was made perfectly soft yolk bursting over the back bacon was so flavorful!! A must to visit again!!

Quiant, hip little diner with one of the BEST Breakfast Sandwiches in Eddy. Atmophere was great with friendly and attentive staff. Highly Recommended!!!

This is a lovely little diner with fast friendly staff, a decently varied menu and a pretty neat location. Their prices are good, especially for a citywide infamous diner, and the portions are AMAZING! My only qualm is, unfortunately, with their famous meatloaf; if you're not necessarily a meatloaf lover (like myself), then you might not enjoy some of their menu options. Their meatloaf is very well seasoned and has a very prominent taste that stands out from everything else that they serve (in a good way, in my opinion). It works well with some dishes, if it's the main ingredient (like with their 'Mom's Meatloaf' sandwich), but paired along with other ingredients in dishes like their 'Breakfast Burger', it can be very overwhelming. The 'Breakfast Burger' sandwich consists of: Ham, crispy bacon, meatloaf, fried egg, cheddar and roasted red pepper aioli. However, despite all of the lovely ingredients listed above, the only thing I found myself tasting was the meatloaf. It definitely wasn't a bad taste but, again, if you're not a big meatloaf lover, menu options with or starring their meatloaf probably won't be a great experience for you. That's honestly the only thing that kept me from rating this place five stars, because other than that, this really is an awesome joint to stop by for breakfast/brunch/lunch. I hope my review can help someone who's dropping by there for the first time!

Solid experience all around. Not pretentious, but good quality food in a comfortable atmosphere. The brunch is heavy on meats and carbs, but sometimes that's just what you're looking for. Love the breakfast potatoes and the chicken and waffles is absolutely worth it! Try it with the hot sauce šŸ˜‰šŸ‘

We came for a late lunch only to find out there was only a breakfast menu. I was a little disappointed. I always pictured this restaurant to be family friendly. I wish there was a childrenā€™s menu. The dollar pancakes were also missed. Colouring sheets and crayons would be a nice addition. The server was nice enough to accept a custom order for the kids. Overall our experience today was average.

Urban Diner has been around for a long time and is a pretty sold staple in the Westmount breakfast scene. Serving up American-style grub, they do it in just the right way which makes everything somehow perfect. They were even featured on the first season of You Gotta Eat Here! There was a point in time when they had a second location south of the river that has since closed, but honestly all you need is the original. While they do remain open until 8pm each night and have a great menu for lunch and dinner fare, what you really want is the brunch (served on weekends and holidays). Brunch is where it's at.

I arrived first thing on a rainy Saturday morning. I had hoped to sit out on the lovely patio out back but the weather had different ideas. Instead we took a table indoors and were seated by a friendly staff member. The space is somewhat large with different seating areas within the dining room, all centered around the kitchen as a focal point. There are tables and booths collected within a decor that is simple and easy-going. The restaurant is laid-back and reliable.
I started my meal with a warm cup of Red Rose tea, just the small caffeine boost that I'd been craving. Like most brunch offerings, the menu consists of items that are more like breakfast as well as items that are more like lunch. They also post their specials on a chalk board above the kitchen window (I once found a Beef Brisket Benny on the specials menu that blew my mind). But today was going to be about the classics. There are four items on the Sweet Tooth section of the menu but you only need one: Dutch Poffertjes (Little dollar sized pancakes with icing sugar. Served with chocolate sauce & orchard fresh syrup for dipping. 12 per order - $8.00). I'm pretty sure that if they ever took these off of the menu that the restaurant would just shut down. Each pancake really is hardly bigger than a toonie, making them extremely easy to pop into your mouth, devouring each and every one. Cooked to a fluffy perfection each tiny pancake is golden brown with a light crisp on the outside while remaining soft on the inside. The warm chocolate sauce is especially sensual to dip into. If Urban Diner has a signature dish, it's probably this (or maybe the breakfast burger made with meatloaf instead of a patty). Also, look no further for an ideal kid-friendly plate.

Can we just talk about the music at Urban Diner for one second? Because it was the ACTUAL BEST. They were playing the best 80s hits and each song was better than the last. I probably spent more time dancing in my chair than eating my food. What a great way to start the day!
I do have a favourite dish to order and it's from the Mains section of the menu. I've ordered it many times before and I ordered it again on this occasion: Diner Hash (Corned beef, potato, caramelized onion, hollandaise, poached egg - $15.00). I don't know what it is about a dish like this but it just speaks to me. I was given a choice of different types of bread as an accompaniment and chose the sourdough. I was also asked how I wanted my eggs cooked and requested them "medium." For me, this plate takes what's good about eggs benedict and sends it in a different and delicious direction. The crispy golden potatoes are tossed in a savoury mix of sweet onions and tender, flavourful corned beef. The eggs are just runny enough and the whole thing is drenched in hollandaise sauce. Everything tastes fresh and homemade. Even the bread on the side (which is normally no more than an afterthought) was soft, warm, and clearly baked in-house. The jam on the side? Definitely homemade. This relatively simple dish is an explosion in comfort. Somehow Urban Diner takes their classic plates up those few extra notches which elevates the entire experience.

I've been to this restaurant many times before in the past and there is something to be said about the places that stay exactly the way that you remember them over the years. Urban Diner is consistent. The food is just as delicious as the first time that I tasted it. They are truly able to provide a sense of "coming home" and that's a beautiful thing.

Great food and exceptional service. Expect it to be busy, but itā€™s worth the wait. You wonā€™t eat like this at a chain! Support your local businesses!

I am in absolute disbelief that I have not rated this place yet. Iā€™ve been coming here for brunches since I was old enough to go to brunch. Urban diner is a must go for brunch in Edmonton. A quaint little diner in a quiet corner of downtown. urban diner is a wondrous place of many delights, from their mac & cheese, brunch menu and the variety of pies and desserts they have. The service is always on top and very friendly. Summer brunch is the best on their patio with their fresh brewed iced teas. Must try menu items Huevos breakfast burrito, sour cream pie, and the vegetarian bennies. Iā€™ve also had a pastrami eggs Benedict that was the feature of the day which was also absolutely amazing, you need to try their hashbrowns and fresh orange juice. You must come here at least once in your life... or twice... or ten

We came for breakfast or brunch on a Friday. It was busy but we still found free parking and didn't have to wait. My classic breakfast was very good but not unique. The jam however was delicious and likely made in house. I'd come back for just toast and jam because it was so good. The others at our table were very satisfied with their choices. The only negative was the service. Our waitress didn't seem to enjoy her work. The others seemed to be much better and even covered for her. It happens. I recommend Urban Diner.

An edmonton classic. Great brunch, sandwiches and the poutine is beyond words. Especially the brisket. I would also recommend trying any of their desserts. The banoffee pie is insane, as well as the 5 layer chocolate torte. Will continue to visit regularly!

Great place to chow down on some classic diner eats. Their mac and cheese is delicious.... they use cavatappi instead of the typical elbow macaroni, and it's always cooked perfectly al dente. Yesterday I tried their grilled chicken sandwich. It was simple and tasty. The artichoke, basil, and tomato "salsa" on the sammi really elevated the flavour profile. What I don't understand is why they got rid of their chorizo burger.... it was one of the best things on the menu, and was featured on You Gotta Eat Here. They haven't had it on the menu for years now and I don't know why!!!

Can I have brunch here everyday? Love the eggs bennies here and the diner potatoes omg. I can eat it all day long. An awesome selection of brunch items and you can't really go wrong. I tried the diner hash on another occasion and absolutely loved itttttttt. Everything is so filling and the portions are great. What an awesome way to start your mornings!

Definitely a place worth checking out for breakfast and the lunch items sound delicious too! Have been here a few times for breakfast and I've never been disappointed

Breakfast for lunch? Always! Urban Diner is a place you can consistently come back to and expect awesome food. I recommend everyone to try it (if you haven't already).

Just awesome. This is one of those hipster diners, not a traditional greasy spoon, but its a good one, and it doesn't get so hipster that it ceases to have the humble and low-key touch that you come to expect and appreciate from a diner. But being a little bit more hip than your neighborhood greasy spoon the food is more conscientiously prepared. Its quite high quality, especially for the price point, which isn't at all expensive. they have interesting rotating menu items, but the regular food is on point to. lots, if not all of the ingredients are prepared in house and it shows, it is very fresh food. as a side note, they dress the fries with a really zesty seasoning. I am not really sure what it is, some kind of citrus infused salt I think, but its delicious and it is so cool when a place takes a staple like fries and puts a good spin on them.
the atmosphere and decor is really good too. definitely in keeping with the diner appeal. it has a very community feel that I think is amplified if you live walking distance from it, but in general I think it would be a good place to go on a date or with an old pal to catch up, there's just something very familiar, intimate, casual, and comfy about the place.
I was inclined at first to give a 4.5 rating to urban diner, but upon giving it some though there wasn't actually anything I can complain about, or reasonably criticize with the place. I think the food could obviously be better but I think at the price its as good as you can get, if you want better than this you are stepping up a price bracket. Yet there are places much steeper than urban diner that come in far behind in food quality. Its hard to get this kind of value for your dining these days. Its a great eatery and I highly recommend it!
Ah
Recently Iā€™ve been on a dire hunt for milkshakes, which is an added opportunity to branch out from the typical Denny and Ihop joints. In this case, we had our eyes on visiting Urban Diner on a Friday night, by no means is this a new establishment, but itā€™s one of the few that has a special treasured spots for university students. Urban Diner has that retro feel that brings back memories of watching That 70s Show; totally rad - totally retro. Serving breakfast all day with the added home cooked comfort dishes, not to mention the case of desserts out on display, youā€™re bound to find something to soothe your soul.

We ordered 2 of the 3 blue plate specials of the night.

Flemish Beef Stew - 5/5 - The beef chunks were so tender and moist, the thick stew was packed with flavor having a subtle hint of ale, being rendered down to such a rich and gravy like consistency then served on top of creamy mashed potatoes. This by far is the definition of comfort food.

Fried Chicken Drumsticks with a side of Mac and Cheese. - ā…– - years ago they had fried chicken on the menu and it was the biggest rave, fast forward to this dining experience and it was WAY below standard. Fried chicken was bland, the breading came off the chicken entirely once you took a bite, which was bland and as dry as ever. The only hope in this dish was the mac and cheese. The cavatappi noodles mixed with cheddar cheese brought out the kid in me. Mac and cheese alone, 5/5

Brisket Poutine - ($9.75) - 3/5 -Cheese, gravy, chunks of brisket served on fresh fried fries, yes please, sounds great. Too bad the brisket was dry which made it quite chewy. Pass on the protein.

Chai Milkshake - ($6) - 5/5 - Itā€™s a friggen chai milkshake, this was worth all the calories. Totally biased though since I have a slight obsession with chai and was in a deep craving mood for milkshakes. Iā€™d honestly stop by Urban Diner just for this milkshake alone. Tbh: salivating as I type while thinking about said milkshake.

Service was great, our server was friendly and personable, while not missing a beat with refills and taking plates away. Poutine came out quick but entrees took a little longer, staggering out 20 minutes after. Atmosphere is casual and homey, not bad for family meals or a place to catch up. I totally recommend coming for a milkshake!

Busy place for lunch, which I take as a good sign. Prompt service, tasty menu selections. The server recommended the beef dip and it was just right! Had the turtle cheesecake ball for dessert and it was mighty tasty. Would recommend for those who are curious to give it a go. One downside, parking can be a bit nutty when it's busy!

Have not been here in quite awhile, but have always enjoyed it here. Stopped in on a Saturday right as they were opening. Ordered the house breakfast. The poached eggs were a perfect medium. Ā The potatoes were nice with a few sweet potatoes thrown in. Coffee is 3.50 which I found a bit steep. Lots of room and not to loud to visit.

Urban diner, a restaurant for delectable breakfast. I always get their special which has always been some type of quiche for me (not sure if that's just a coincidence). And I am always very happy and satisfied with the food. I find this place a lot better than Cora's in my personal opinion probably because I like the warm atmosphere. Portions are good except the French toast which came with only two pieces surprisingly. They had hot choclate from Duchess with homemade marshmallows. Now THAT was delicious! This is a great place to take your family or inlaws for a tasty brunch!

I used to love coming here, but it's really gone down hill. The last two times I've gone the food has been sub par. Our potatoes were burnt and the server said he would bring us new ones but never did - we didn't even end up eating the potatoes. The server also didn't replenish our coffee or ask how our food was until it was too late. The eggs benny had two eggs on one bun, kind of a rip off if you ask me. The coffee tasted awful and the quiche was alright but we will not be coming back here.
RickyRocket
The poutine here is magical.... Had the turkey club and cleaned up my poutine bowl with it... It had nice Christmas style turkey, not sub par deli style turkey :)

Went for brunch and I want to like it but honestly, the plates were pathetic. Terrible portions of poor quality ingredients. It's just unfortunate.

Beef Dip and Mac and Cheese

This place is all about the comfort food. Had the beef dip here cause my group chat was blowing up about beef dips. The BD had beef brisket, caramelized onion, russian dressing Got a good thick bread on it to absorb the dip. Good taste and while itā€™s not the best iā€™ve had but it is far from the worst. Mac and cheese was on sale for 7 bucks that day too and tasted sub par. It was comprised of cavatappi noodles, sharp cheddar cheese, garlic toast. I felt the noodles were a bit tough to eat and thought that the dish should be called Cav and cheese for obvious reasons. Shout out to the garlic toast though. Iā€™ve been here a couple times before and Iā€™d suggest getting the Monte Cristo, itā€™s really good. Also avoid this place if you want brunch, unless you want rock hard hash.

Located in laidback area off of 124 st and on 102 ave, this place is a nice spot to stop for something filling and not too pricy. Itā€™s got a good diner ambiance and it has a good selection of burgers/sandwiches.

Sal says: Just try it

#yeg #yegeats #food #foodie #foodporn #instafood #delicious #yummy #lunch

Staff was odd and unfriendly. Watched the hostess this morning bypass a minority person waiting to get a seat, he actually had to ask her if she was going to acknowledge him or not. Terrible. She skipped over him and was seating people behind him. Other than that, best mimosas!!

Urban Diner is one of my favourite smaller restaurants in Edmonton. I've never heard a bad thing about their food. I am in love with their mac and cheese, I would even say it's some of the best I've had in the city. Their desserts are always lovely too and the atmosphere is very simple and diner-ish. I prefer the downtown location to the university one.

After hearing so much about this place, I finally made it out to try it. We came around 12:30 and were sat promptly. They only serve brunch on Sundays which aside from a burger is all breakfast items. I had the French toast which was delicious and apple pie flavored. I also had a cappuccino which was okay. My sister had the crab cake eggs benedict which looked fantastic.

Good place for diner food in a great location. If you're looking to take comfort in the simple foods within the Westmount area, this is one place to check out. In terms of the exterior, I really love brick buildings with modern accents to them. The interior is comfortable and warm. Service was satisfactory. The food was good but nothing that blew my tastebuds away. Though one thing I will remember about this place is the variety of rich desserts they serve. Other than that, this is a decent place for diner, comfort food.

Great food! But the worst portion size ever. I am not a very big eater myself but I find myself still going hungry after ordering a breakfast.

Came during brunch-a-thon on the 24th of December with two friends. It was busy but we got a table quickly. Had the traditional toast, eggs, and bacon with hash browns. Everything was delicious. The rye bread was really good. Thick cut toast with a swirl of rye served with a tasty jam. I also really liked their hash browns. Soft poached eggs were cooked really well.

Our server was awesome too! Had a great breakfast experience.

This place used to be my favourite place to dine but the quality of the food had dropped dramatically. I remember this used to be the place to go on a Friday night with friends and family. I came in today and ordered a Rueben and it was soggy. I was very disappointed to hear that super friendly and knowledge guy server that used to work here left. What a lost for the business. I will never come back anymore.

Urban Diner has two locations in Edmonton, one near the University and one on 124 street. I've been to both locations but I usually go to the one on 124 street, which I will be writing about. Although the word "diner" is in their name, the interior doesn't really look like a diner to me. Their menu on the other hand has a lot of classics that you'd find at a diner. Great place for comfort food. Seating, food, and service are fairly quick even during a busy time such as when they have their weekend brunch. I enjoy their regular menu more than their brunch, though.

This place is amazingly good. Our entire group was so pleased with the food, service and ambiance of Urban. The salmon burger was delicious and the carrot soup was so tasty. I will be going to Urban again...very soon.

Dining earlier in the week with my 6 yr old. Everything was great. Good food, awesome server, pleasant atmosphere. Except my child asked me why one of the ladies wasn't wearing underwear. I took a closer look and realized one of the people working was not dressed appropriate. I believe she was a manager as it looked like she was training someone.

Amazing brunch here this past weekend. The patio was amazing in the sunshine. So quaintly tucked away in Ā a little Italian Villa of restaurants surrounded by greenery and flowers. It was gorgeous. The service was great from beginning to end. The mini dutch pancakes are a definite must-try! Splurge and get as many as you can - you'll wanna eat them all! I adored the 'create your own mimosa' menu. Totally unique. The eggs benedict and fried egg sandwich were both dynamite. Can't wait until the next time I'm back in Edmonton to come back to this spot. Will recommend it to everyone.

Delicious food. Great choice and nice patio! Staff were super accommodating with our big group and ensured that we could all sit together without any hassle. Everyone ordered something different and were happy with their meals. The salmon eggs Benny was pleasant would definitely order again.

Worth a visit. Table of 5 at 9:00am on Saturday. Place was jammed packed by 9:30. Great service from waiter to the gal at the register. Our meals were all presented in a timely manner, all correct and hot, never saw the bottom of our coffee cup. Sure beats (insert fast food/chain breakfast establishment name here) >

Burnt Toast, Half Grilled Sausage, Half Glass Juic. Visited March 22, 2015. Having well received by the hostess and our experience started to go downhill gradually.
In spite of my partner emaphasising the toast and chicken sausage to be grilled well they both came just the opposite. When the waitress was called she told us that she had mentioned it to the cook and he told her to serve it as is. . We returned the two items only to be for them to be brought back burnt and toasted to the extreme; almost black. I asked the waitress to bring the cook to the table and when he came he told us the toaster was broken and has only two settings - light and dark! He did not apologise or offer to redo the order or suggest a substitute. HE SIMPLY DID NOT CARE! We also run a hospitality business in the downtown Edmonton. Your place was busy but this is no way to treat your customers.
Jonny
We were a table of 10 and this being my first time here, I learned they have a very interesting seating policy. Apparently your whole party must be present before theyā€™ll seat you. Thatā€™s right, you need 100% attendance. What is this, junior high? I guess theyā€™d rather you clog the front of the restaurant, then sit with 80% present. Oh brotha. The place was absolutely packed for a Saturday ā€“ luckily, my sis made a reservation. Weekends must always be like this.

Great Food! Will come back!. I dined here with my husband today as we just live at the apartment building behind the Urban Diner on 109th street. After doing home renovations all week, we came in for a quick bite. I had the two eggs, and my husband has the breakfast burger..which was huge! Our sever, Morgan? , was very attentive and when our eggs werent cooked just right, they were replaced very fast. We usually come down to Urban diner and will continue to keep coming back because of the great service and food.

Finally got down to the Urban Diner for breakfast and I wasn't disappointed. The vegetarian breakfast wrap was amazing, I wish I would have had room for another one. My husband loved the Breakfast Burger, his only wish was that his stomach was bigger so he could have finished it all. The service was quick, as was the food. Will definitely be back again.

Good food made up for the poor service. Frittata was good but greasy. Diner hash was very yummy. Server was inattentive.

Fantastic Frittatas. The frittatas here are basically the best breakfast I've ever had. Very filling. Much tasty.
Service and price are a nonissue when it comes to those frittatz

Will not be back!. Very indifferent service! Breakfast was cold, should not be so difficult to get a hot plate to the table with so few patrons!
Bryan Evans
Underwhelmed. Had the breakfast burger which had meatloaf, ham, bacon cheese and Russian dressing and somehow this had minimal flavours. people with me had the salmon bennies and had the same relatively bland taste...won't be back
OliBrownOnTour
No points for presentation...my meatloaf and eggs looked like it fell off the plate and that they just scooped it up and threw it back on. Meatloaf was good. Toast was soggy. Pretty underwhelming.

Nothing special, very average at best. I've always heard fairly good things about this place from friends and coworkers (and have reads lot of good online reviews) and I decided to try it for myself. And now that I've tried it, I can honestly say the food is nothing special. I decided to start with a sweet treat (dessert) to start things off, it was the Peanut Buttter Ball (or a name similar to that, can't remember the precise name) and it was tasty, sure, but nothing spectacular. I then ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich with fries and I was disappointed: the ridicuously small amount of ham and turkey in this Monte Cristo was enough to make me cry tears of pain and sorrow. I paid HOW MUCH just for three slices of bread with HARDLY any meat in between them? I can make a far better, and far MEATIER, Monte Cristo myself at home. In terms of service, it was nothing spectacular, very average and lukewarm, bordering on distant and "I couldn't care less if you didn't come in today to dine here". If you like UrbanDiner, then fine, you like it; I cannot tell anyone what to like but I cannot recommend this place.

Glorified Truck Stop. I went for brunch with my family. It was frustrating to experience their no-substitution policy. Its 2014. This is the only restaurant that wants to serve only what THEY want to serve you. Sure you can a la carte your breakfast choice, if you want to pay $17 for 2 eggs, 4 slices of tomato and a few pieces of fruit.
The food was very average. The potatoes that come "mandatory" with your meal are an embarrassment.
The one thing i will say that I did enjoy was the atmosphere and the very friendly service. Just like a truck stop. Unfortunately the great server isn't enough to make me return. I can't believe this place made any kind of list of "must go to's".

Absolutely love UD! Such a great breakfast with lots of unique menu items. Highly recommend for weekend brunch!

If you only have one thing here you have to try the Fried Chicken! I swear everytime we go back I'll have something different but I always come back to the chicken. I think its because it tough to find a decent crispy piece of chicken in this town.

Oh yah, apparently the Meatloaf, Mac & Cheese and Liver & Onions are really good too (so say my dining companions anyway)

Great Mac and Cheese!. My daughter and I hit the Urban Diner tonight for some Mac and Cheese. I would normally make it myself but it's a super hot night. The Mac and Cheese was almost identical to mine and we will definitely return on a hot night when it's too hot to cook. To finish, we had the lemon sour cream pie which had a great lemon flavour and was served with real whip. Prices were very reasonable and service was excellent. We will definitely be back!

Okay... the service isn't good. I've been to the Urban Diner in the past and it was great, but this weekend I went there for brunch and was really dissapointed in the service. The food was ok, nothing special, but our server was really not interested in doing his job. He took our orders promptly and food arrived on time, but our coffees and waters were never refilled, he never asked how our meals were, or if we wanted to order anything else. I don't think I'll be back.

Disappointing experience at a Brunch place I normally love. I have been here a couple times for brunch, and usually it's quite tasty (love the Fritata) with great service, even when they're busy. However last Saturday I went it was quite the unfortunate ordeal. Me and my friend were seated, we still were waiting for our two other friends. We waited for our waitress to show up, say hi, ask for drinks; the usually first encounter. After ten minutes of waiting, I finally flagged down someone passing by and asked if we could grab some coffee. The manager ( I believe) came over and apologized for the wait, got us our coffee and said our waitress would be by shortly. Waitress did finally come by, but was very brisk and slightly rude. No hi, how are you, sorry for the wait, etc. Simply asked if we wanted appetizers while we waited and walked off when we said no. The rest of our party finally showed up, we ordered and the experience continued to go downhill. One of the orders was wrong, not a huge deal. However, one of our meals never got delivered... and we waited... and we waited... until a completely different waitress finally noticed. Sum it up, I do like the Urban Diner, and up to now I've always had a pleasant experience. The waitress was horrible, and it reflected in the tip we gave her. She did try to fix it at the end, but at that point we were all done wanting to deal with it. I'm not sure if she was new, or just didn't really like her job, but the service, especially if I had never been before, would make me not want to ever go there again.

Poor service bad coffee boring food. We took our two teenage daughters here for breakfast and we're not impressed with the service. The place is too small and the staff are too busy laughing in the kitchen to attend to their tables. We had to ask 4 times for water and she only have us 2 glasses. We were given one refill. We ordered eggs, the mash with eggs and a quiche. The only thing interesting here is the freshly squeezed orange juice. $100 bill to feed 4 with coffee and juice. Too many hipsters here as well. It seems that people don't come here to eat, but to be seen. Almost like a brightly lit pub atmosphere. There was a one up of people waiting out the door and the waitress couldn't get to us so that we could pay and leave an open table. She told us she would bring us the debit machine 3 times, meanwhile she kept serving drinks and walking past us. We waited a good 10 minutes after getting our bill before she finally gave us the machine. We won't go here again. This place needs a new location and a floor manager to keep it in shape.

Disappointed. I ordered the breakfast burger as featured on TV. Touted to be an amazing breakfast. Today it was served on an old onion bun. Not even a day old bun. Not even heated or toasted to pass it off as a fresher bun.....i didn't eat most of the bun. On top of that the bacon which was reheated was either from the day before or poorly managed (we ate at about 9:30 am and the restaurant opens at 9 am) as it was very tough and chewy..Microwaved?? The meatloaf was just reheated, nothing about the dish was fresh, sorry. As a former restaurant operator it is disappointing to hear about a local restaurant featured and reviewed favorably on TV, make the effort and support to come out excited to try out a signature dish only to have it mistreated by whoever prepared the "You Gotta Eat Here" featured TV dish, the one dish that should at least be perfect every time.....I am not one to make a scene in the restaurant but one of those customers who will probably never come back. I was not surprised to see empty seats at 10 am when we left. In our neighborhood, Sherwood Park, you would be waiting in line for breakfast at 10 am at our local breakfast eateries....

Urban Diner Experince. To Whom It May Concern: I was dining at the Urban Diner in the High Street area last Friday. I must say that eventho the food was outstanding, the service that I received wasn't the best. The waitress seemed to be very amateur like she belonged in a truck stop restaurant. And then when it came time to ask her what was on the dessert menu, she just pointed to the display and said "it's all labeled so you can just go over and decide." Everytime before the servers have informed me what they have, so I was taken back by the lack of knowledge that she protrayed. I do normally recommend this diner for great food but I warn people not to expect the greatest in service. It's a real hit and miss. I am still not sure if I will return just because of this incident.

Chicken burger was very soggy on the bottom and try on top! Would not recommend!

Parking is a challenge but there are lots of tables, looks smaller outside than in.park kitty corner at MoC.i had the Breakfast burger really good and my wife had the Monte Crisco. Really good coming back

So So. Barely average service, the server really didn't care if we were there or not. The poutine was good, soup was good but really salty. Grilled cheese sandwich and salmon burger were both fair. Too much dry bread. Not enough cheese on the sandwich and strong tasting salmon. The mac and cheese was ok. My favorite part of the meal was the pickle! Over priced for "fair" food
Boston Cream Pie
I love this restaurant, year round, inside and out. The food is fabulous, the prices reasonable, large portions - and the Lemon Sour Cream Pie - oh my goodness Soooo good! Keep up the great work Urban Diner...I tell all the people I know about you and they too are pleased. :) ONLY DOWNSIDE - your staff can be very rude. It would be a good idea to give them some customer service lessons or hire some staff that would appreciate working.

Great Brunch Spot. My family met here for a Sunday brunch and everyone loved it! The service was quick, friendly and helpful. Even the toast comes from a local bakery daily (our waitress told us after we asked).

The desserts were fantastic - we tried the lemon sour cream pie and the oreo tiramisu for the table and we didn't leave a crumb! So good!

Wonderful diner, we will definitely be coming back again.

At least it is a Diner unlike Blue Plate!. This Diner really does try to give you choices in the spirit of a diner and I appreciate that, particularly since there are facilities in Edmonton like the Blue Plate who have a lot of nerve calling themselves diners!

Urban Diner does stick to conventional fare which I enjoy and they also have really good desserts.

Downside of this diner which is not typical of 'real' diners is the terrible service! Always been really nonchalant type service personnel here, the type of people who don't seem to give a damn about their job!
Dull Knife
Very well done dishes, price cheap... Steak sandwich is good....

So-so. I've been twice recently and both times the meal was just okay. The first time I had the pulled pork and thought it was no better than I make (and I'm no super chef). My daughter had the salmon and really enjoyed it. Two weeks later the salmon was just so-so, and I had the quiche which really had nothing to recommend it, and my mother had a chicken burger that - again - was okay but nothing to write home about.

The atmosphere is nice, but there are enough restaurants with both atmosphere and excellent and consistent food. I'll not be back.

Service was not good. I understand it was the diner rush but the hurried nature of the server made it feel like a fast food joint. Our host ran out of menus, I could not order a drink because the waiter walked away too fast and we waiter only came to our table to take our order and bring our food. The room is clearly understaffed,

Room was ok but it's really stating to show it age.

Portions are big.

Fried chicken was ok, a bit dry but still good. The fries are interesting, the seasoning made them taste like salt and pepper chips.

The Monty Cristo was huge. The kids fish and chips was good, it had 1 big fillet, crispy and meaty

The chocolate cake was pretty good. it was mile high with 4 thick layers The frosting was fudgy and dense. The cake was not too sweet and had a strong coco flavor.

Nothing outstanding here.

Urban Dine at 124th Street. I am left wondering how a restaurant can serve food this badly.

I ordered the Quicke of the Day at it was the worst mush ever created.

Canned peas and other mush. My sister ordered a fried egg sandwhich
and she could not eat it either.

I have passed my thoughts to many other friends and two particullary who
have businessess on 124th St. They confirmed this was not a restaurant
they would recommend and agreed the food was awful.

I told my server the Quiche was terrible and she asked if I would like to order something else. I told her I had lost my appetite for food. I would never
never go there again.

Very Good Food/Service "Like" "Like". Met our kids here for brunch last Sunday. We didn't have a res but, despite that, we were seated in about 5 minutes. Our table was the best one in the whole place, I think, right again the window overlooking the Manor Cafe's yard and the river valley. Great! Next we had a really nice waiter, very interested and invested in our meal process (so very nice to see for a change!). Wish I knew his name I could send him props. Next, the food! The food was delicious! I had the French toast, which really hit the brunch spot. My husband had the corned beef dish and said it was fabulous, a son had the meatloaf burger, which he thoroughly enjoyed and his girlfriend had the waffle and she was beaming. Portions are large, the apple juice tastes like "real" apple juice and it is not a bad price for the large portions, for how much we enjoyed everything and for the service we received. We will most definitely be back and will most definitely tell people about our enjoyable brunch experience.

Mixed reviews: I had the eggs Benedict served on a crab cake. It was outstanding!!
My patents had the corned beef hash and breakfast burger and both said it was forgettable.
We shared the tiny pancakes, they were cute and yummy. But they are just little pancakes...
I guess it depends what you order here.

French Toast anyone?. There are some places that make french toast.. and then there's the Urban Diner. It has to be one of my favorite breakfast treats of all time. Thick slices of bread covered with maple fried bananas and syrup, stuffed with Cranberry and Mascarpone...amazing and always just as good as the last time.

Or try the crab cake eggs bene if they are on special!

I love the area, the staff are mostly pretty fantastic and it makes for a perfect weekend breakfast stop if you want to escape the chain experience. Be prepared to wait in line because its a neighborhood classic :)

The should call this place the greasy spoon. The food lacks flavor and is really, really greasy.

Mmmm MMmmm good. Such an awesome place!!! We've been here 3 times now for dinner and we're never disappointed .. such delicious amped up diner food (I guess exactly like the name alludes to lol). Good beer, great food and it's a comfortable relaxing environment. I've heard their brunch is fantastic and is on the top of our weekend to do list 8).

Too expensive. I got a surprise in the bill.. I went there last Jan 12, Saturday, around 11am. Nice location. Good atmosphere. Tables are a bit too close for my taste. Service was very good except they did not have a menu for coffees, beverages and desserts available. So I had some surprises in the bill. I had a simple eggs breakfast as I was not very hungry ($7.50 in the menu). Then I had one cappuccino which was very small (I was not told about the price), 200mL orange juice served in a wine glass (really?), and half of a dessert that was very good (a ball of chocolate). I stayed there for 1h approximately with my friend. For my surprise the bill was $25 for my order only. What a surprise! As my eggs cost me $7.50 according to the menu. Did I pay over $5 for a small cappuccino and over $5 for 200mL of orange juice? Really? Even if the price of the dessert was $8 what I doubt. I only paid for half dessert. Well the total bill was not pleased at all. I will not come back for sure because is not worth the price.

Not bad... not out of this world. Had the mac n cheese. it was just ok. very plain. portion was on the small side for what you are paying for.
Husband had the brisket sandwhich and loved it.

Service was good. We had our 11 monh daughter with us so we needed a highchair. We were placed at a table which was awkward and tight spaced. Positioned quite close to adjacent tables and booths. A booth would have been better but none were available.

If I go back I'll try something else and be sure we are seated in a booth. If...

Date Night. Last night, as per our usual date night ritual, the boyfriend and I were browsing yelp searching for a new restaurant on the quest to find our spot. After a long day, neither of us wished to travel far.

The location is definitely working for this place which adds to the atmosphere of a cute downtown diner. Being a Saturday night, which meant most people on Jasper ave were further up the street at pubs and bars, it was very slow and quiet. It made it easier to enjoy.

We were originally seated by the window, but later asked to be moved as per the window being a bit drafty and the table super small. With our drinks and appetizer on it, we didn't know how anything else would fit without making the experience irritating. The booth was much better.

I was torn between the friend chicken and the mac and cheese, but being int he mood for something cheesey wound up with me ordering the diner mac and cheese. Boyfriend ordered the grilled chicken burger.

As a starter, we decided to get a poutine to split, and boy was it big. We were almost full from sharing it. It was farely decent, a huge bonus for the fries being crispy and not soggy from a gravy bath. But it tasted... really sweet and strange. Maybe it's something they put in the gravy, but I never expected a sweetness to it.

The diner mac and cheese was good, better than most I've had at other restaurants, but the portion was very skimpy and it could have used more sauce. But I loved that they had foccocia garlic bread on the side, I could have eaten just a bunch of that.

The grilled chicken burger was interesting in the use of lime aioli ( I think that is what it was) which seperated it from most burgers. And the bun they used was apparently wonderful ( it was mentioned to ask what kind of bun it was haha)

All in all, it was decent, but nothing I'd make the effort to go back for except for the Italian Lemonade, so...so... soooo good.

My sister who is a local recommended that we have dinner her when we visited in the summer after seeing it featured on the food network show "You got to eat here"! It was all around AMAZING! The staff was prompt and friendly when we arrived, it was a nice day so we sat on the Patio! We were also greeted by a neighbourhood kittie who apparently loves to visit the restuant patrons according to our server. Unfortunutly we were also greeted by a wasp and as one in our part was allergic we were easily moved inside! I ordered the Chicken Mac and Cheese and I can honestly say it is one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten. It was creamy and flavorful and the chicken was cooked perfectly! I have always been wary of diner mac and cheese but this was amazing! My sister had the Salmon which she said was delicious as well but she admitted that the mac and cheese was superior! (She finished the majority of mine for me, lol) The server was friendly and accomidating and overall it was a very enjoyable meal! Highly recommend!

Breakfast is consistently delicious. great service and amazing orange juice! i always suggest this location to out of towners.

I've had most of the sandwiches and they are all good. Great chicken soup as well. It's a busy place so sometimes the service can be a bit slow, but generally it's pretty good. One if the better consistently good places to eat in the city. The Reuben , Breakfast sandwich, and the open faced Beef Brisket are the hits.
CyniC-
Underwhelming. My high expectations for a good breakfast place have been shattered by a sub-par eggs benedict on a piece of rye bread (my preference being english muffin) along with poorly done old and dry hash browns. The atmosphere is not even good. Everything felt so rushed and forced to portray an image of a diner from the past... No, things wouldn't have been helped with bigger portions either... it just sucked. I'd go to Barb & Ernies or Normand's Bistro for eggs benedicts and atmosphere.

In hindsight, I guess I could've asked the server to serve it on an english muffin, get me a second eggs benedict w/ ham on the same plate, and redo all of the hashbrowns, but I think that would be too out of line. Perhaps if my friends forced me to come here again, I will order something else other than an eggs benedict, but nothing really caught my eye in terms of breakfast choices...

http://urbandiner.com/cms/OurMenus/Breakfast/tabid/2494/Default.aspx

This place is in a very good neighborhood and I haven't had the lunch or dinner here but judging from the breakfast I feel very hesitant to give this place another chance given the taste, food quality, portion sizes, and the price.

Mediocre. Phoned ahead to ask whether we could have a lunch menu on Sunday afternoon. We were told yes of course, but on arrival could only have brunch. We had the frittata and quiche. Both were just alright - edible at best. As the review below notes - the food has very little flavour. I could have made something better at home and I'm not much of a cook. Service was fine.

Great Potatoes. We saw this on You've Got To Eat Here but couldn't remember what it was that intrigued on us the menu. We went for breakfast and had a very generous tasty meal. We started with the little pancake type starters with chocolate, syrup and compote for dipping. My husband had the daily quiche and thought it was pretty good. I had two eggs with sausage. Both of us were very impressed with the potatoes and the sausage (my husband loves to share my meals), the multi-grain bread was very nice too. We found it to be a bit pricey but part of that has to do where it is situated in the City. We will be back to try another meal.

We showed up for what we thought would be lunch at 1:20 and were informed that if we didn't order their breakfast which was served til 1:30 we would have to wait until 2 to get lunch... I'm not a breakfast food person that that sucked on its own. We ended up order breakfast, it was okay, nothing out of the ordinary. Our drinks came out at the same time as our food, our waiter never checked to see if we had all we needed we had to ask for cutlery. Long story short, I don't foresee a return trip any time soon. If ever. And it was really expensive to boot for how much we got. 2 pieces of French toast for $12? Had high hopes after its feature on you gotta eat here on the food net work.

Great place for breakfast. The diner potatoes are amazing. Always have had great service even when busy. Patio is also great!

Food was alright. The service was friendly but slightly sporatic. I would go again, but only if I was in the area. I wouldn't make it a special trip.

Delicious! I recommend breakfast burger if you are craving for big meaty meal.

Some Guy. Went here for breakfast while I'm moving into the neighbourhood, and I'm overall quite impressed. My fiancee and I had the French Toast and a Fritatta for breakfast, and both enjoyed our dishes. Prices were decent, the decor was nice, and the menu looked interesting. My issue was that my fritatta was slightly underseasoned, and they didn't have the same type of 'comfort food' that you could find at other breakfast type of places. Overall, I enjoyed it, and would go here again.

Sunday walk. We walked with no realy destination but ended up at the Urban Diner around 10:00 on Sunday morning. The patio is so peaceful. Service was great. We ordered poached eggs and they were done perfectly. The preserves that come with toast are also amazing. Great place for breakfast - best to get there early.

Great, casual place to get some delicious food! We take our 2 kids there fairly often and they are always very accommodating. My personal favorite is their fries.

Great food. Highly recommended. We'll be back. Just kitty corner to MEC.

When You Want a Great Casual Meal.... Go to the diner. A new chef (not brand new) has begun putting his stamp on the menu.
All the real greats are still there, the Ruben, Breakfast Sausage, French Toast, Breakfast Burger, Egg Sandwich, Huevos, Monte Cristo Mac and Cheese, Iced tea, and all that.
Whats new is the Green Means Go which must be good because my wife orders it every time we go for lunch or dinner.
Diner Hash is new along with the house cured Beef Brisket specials like the Beef Brisket Benny and open face beef brisket sandwich.
Specials now include the Breakfast Hot Dog (Chicken apple sausage, bacon, eggs, holendaise, in a bun), quiche, soup, beer, dessert, and enough other stuff to help keep the menu fresh.
If your not full when you are done order some Banoffee Pie for dessert.
We eat here very regularly because of the unwaveringly good comfort food and the excellent friendly service.

Love it!. I absolutely love this restaurant. The menu has a little something for everyone (helpfull with a picky family for sunday brunch). and fresh squeezed orange juice?! mmmm. Breakfast is always delicious and the service is fantastic! couldnt rave enough about Urban Diner

Will definitely be back!. My husband, daughter, and I came at about 5:30 on a Saturday evening. It was busy, but not packed, and we were seated right away. Service throughout was extremely fast and efficient. I had the reuben & fries, hubby had the angus burger & fries and our daughter had the grilled cheese and fries. All were delicious! The reuben was full of meat, lots of swiss cheese, sauerkraut and caramelized onions on an interesting marbled rye bread. I tasted the burger - it was also excellent. As mentioned in previous reviews, the fries were thin, crispy, and plentiful. We were too full to try any of the wonderful looking desserts, but next time, I think I will save room for the banoffee pie.

Not shabby at all (:. We were a pretty large group (of thirteen) that showed up out of the blue, so we were pretty relieved to find that the restaurant wasn't packed (although it was a Friday night) and that they were more than willing to push together some tables in order to seat us all. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and accommodating, so no complaints at all there - we tipped her wonderfully - and we generally had a really pleasant time. I lucked out in ordering the shepherd's pie, which was unanimously decided at our table to be the 'best tasting', along with the veggie burger. The mac n cheese as well as the lasagna were not very popular at our table, but that was still alright because the servings of fries were so generous that we had more than enough to share amongst one another.

Pleasant Lunch. My wife and I stopped in for lunch. Overall it was a pleasant experience. Their clam chowder was tasty without being too starchy. My wife enjoyed her first ever veggie burger. She thought it was ok, but found it lacking flavour. She doesn't think she would order it again. We both enjoyed the fries and gravy. The fries were cut thin and seasoned just right and went well with the beef based gravy. They disappeared easily. The Reuben sandwich I had appeared to be be made with fresh gourmet ingredients and was very mild in taste.
We were seated by the window with a great view of the outside and the restaurant. The chairs were the standard wooden armless kind that were easy and comfortable to sit in. The tables were not crammed together but but well spaced around the restaurant. Overall the decore was relaxing. Lunch for two with taxes and tip came to around $40.00.

Casual Saturday Brunch. Had the opportunity to visit the Urban Diner (downtown) for the first time. We had met friends for brunch and had the most pleasant experience. Our server Gillian's down home comfortable way really made for a great meal. Wonderful, wonderful!!
The food was tasty, both the frittatas, regular and veg, we tasty with good seasoning, the Huevos were excellent with a very scrumptious sauce and seasonings; the sweet chili side was v.good. I had the bennies done properly (soft) with a very light hand on salt. An in house made hollandaise what a treat!
Two minor improvements I would like to see are with the hash browns that could use some sort of salting or seasoning after coming out of oven or fryer, for my like liking, if only just a little and I think some sort of cut up fruit on the plate would just have helped to make the presentation of the Bennies top notch.
All in all will go back if asked again no problem.

Originally from Toronto and my favorite restaurant out there is peters on eglinton and I always order a Reuben sandwhich ...well peters Reuben is about 6 inches tall. The waiter told me I should he ashamed of myself after eating the whole sandwhich! .... So I felt like a Reuben last night here in Edmonton. After reading up on urban spoon I decided to go to urban diner... I was seated promptly and since I had read the menu online I was ready to order. I forget what beer I ordered but it was from a brewery in Seattle. Excellent dinner beer it was flavorful but not light. I ordered the house mixed greens to start and though the salad could have been larger it was still delicious. The maple vinigarette was different than anything I'd had before. Just wish the salad was bigger. I have a huge appetite. Onto the main course! The Reuben! Amazing taste! The bread seemed toasted and not grilled though. Nothing wrong with that. Again my only complaint would be the size of the sandwhich. Corned beef or mtl style sandwhiches should be huge! Nevermind the sandwhich...the coleslaw was the best I'd had. I like a vinigarette oil dressing and this was exactly that. With a sharpness to it as well! Possibly garlic? I explained to the waitress that I was new in town and had a whole weekend to taste food! Well she made me a list of places I should try! That's going above and beyond service. I really appreciated it. All in all...ill be back at urban diner for breakfast soon. And I'd like to try their grilled cheese. And try their fried chicken. But my search for a colossal Reuben continues...

This place is sort of pricey but the food is good! I've had bench there many times and it's always good!

Had a great breakfast here. Waffles are great and the mimosa's are good if you like pulp in your orange juice.

Delish. Should have reviewed this place earlier but neglected to.

have probably done weekend brunch here 4 or 5 times and have had great food every single time. wait times can be crazy but hell i'd rather wait half an hour for a great brunch than walk into a crappy one.

service has been unremarkable - which is excellent. that's what i want on a saturday or sunday morning. they're efficient and friendly without being effusive at all. perfect if you ask me.

food is great. what can i say? delicious sausages, great hashbrowns, their bennies are killer - eggs always done to how you ask. toast is always buttered nicely - not neglected and never slathered. go there. food is great. tip your server. walk away happy.
