I visit here regularily and have been visiting this actual location for over 5 or 6 years, back then it was the Velvet Lounge.Located at the Grand Theatre, this is in the common area before the entrance to the actual theatre iitself, so they are well situated and the decor itself has quite a history. From the flooring, to the ceiliing, and the old catwalks strung from the air, you can see parts of the original theatre from way back when. The sushi is very well presented, there are often new items added to the menu and the Chef, Tomo Mitsuno, puts great craft in his work. The prices are good, making it accessible to the patrons who come in wanting to taste, and the drinks are excellent. The Drinks Manager has a good stock available and their mixologists always have something you might want to try.Centered in the downtown core, accessible by commuter train, taxi drivers do know this place well, I would highly recommend making this place a must see if you want a trendy place to hang. The music is well suited for a lounge atmosphere, and they have a regular saxophone player, Chris, who comes in with a DJ to play very cool jazz sets. The side venue, Ubu Lounge, situated just to the side entrance, also hosts an ecclectic set of musicians throughout the month and they pull in quite a good crowd.Definitely a pleasure to hang here on Wednesdays or Thursdays when I'm in downtown Calgary!
Expensive, but totally worth it. The staff are top notch, the food is incredible (they use real crab meat in their sushi), and the beer is cold. The location and decor are exciting as well. Not open Saturdays for lunch, but that's okay.
Wow, what a lounge!!! Unbelieveable sushi, spectacular customer service and just an overall great night! A must see if you are in Calgary.
