Fast food at it's best if you're at the Winnipeg Square. Their vermecilli was tasty and delicious. Nice friendly staff and service. Be back to try their spring rolls.
This place is located in the Winnipeg Square food court. There aren't many Vietnamese restaurants within walking distance of the downtown core and this place definitely fills a gap.
Their menu is small, they offer one type of pho(beef noodle soup), one type of vermicelli, and a handful of lunch combos. Nearly all items areunder $10 with a drink and tax. Not to mention everything here is lightning quick. They have the system worked out such that all the noodles along with condiments are essentially boxed and ready to go, they simply garnish with meat and add soup if necessary.
Honestly, the food is mediocre at best. Vinh Long however is fast and very reasonably priced. You have to give them credit for that, and for me, not having to walk outside on a super cold winter day gives them bonus points!
A few months back I wrote about L & Y Tasty Soup at Portage Place. I was particularly happy to find a non-chain restaurant operating in a food court. Well, Winnipeg Square ups the ante in this regard as they have several such places. I’ll try and get around to checking out all of them in the next little while, but for now I want to highlight Vinh Long Vietnamese restaurant.
Good food from a food court. I don't eat a lot of Vietnamese to comment how authentic it is, however the food is tasty and seems of good fresh ingredients. Portions for the price you pay seems like a great value for downtown (special combo #3 includes a drink and a good sized portion for under $10). One of my go to places as a downtown worker.
Good Viet Option in Winnipeg Square. The Winnipeg Square food court has never really appealed to me...it's small so there's not a lot of choices. Mostly due to convenience if you work in any of the buildings connected to Winnipeg Square, the food options are okay but not great. But I have eaten at Vinh Long on and off when I have been relegated to this food court and have always been happily surprised with decent Vietnamese food. I am picky about Vietnamese dishes as it's one of my favourite cuisines.
The prices are good and the value is there. You can easily eat for under $10 and be pretty full. They have a lot of combo platters - you know the rice plus 2 other items selections. But what I really like here is their "bun" or vermicelli bowl for $7 after tax. It comes in the bigger square styrofoam container and you get a portion that's similar to what you get a sit down Vietnamese restaurant. You get 2 big spring rolls (not veg as it has pork), 2 pork hashes and a generous portion of grilled pork along with the vermicelli, cucumbers and shredded carrots. You can even add on crushed peanuts to the meat too! Ask for some hot sauce as they have pre-portioned chili paste to go too. The dish is pretty satisfying especially since this is a fast food concept in a food court. The spring rolls were not soggy and were well sized, the pork hash and grilled pork had good flavours.
Their ice coffee is okay...I prefer a stronger coffee. I've also had their beef pho - I didn't love their broth so I wouldn't order it again but the vermicelli bowls are delicious and at a great price!
