First time ordering from here, and OMG it was awesome, my daugters never eat seconds and they are begging for more. Meal size was a perfect portion. I would surely recommend it.
Came in for lunch at the Albert Street location and the place was clean and tidy asthetic wise. My server Martin was friendly, cheerful and overall pleasant to deal with. The food was hot and portioned nicely. Had a great experience and will definitely be back with friends!
Haven’t been here in a while because I found the gravy not to be the greatest, but decided to give it a second chance. Tried the perogy poutine and it was excellent! 6 large perogies on top of the poutine! Will definitely have to visit again!
Love this place!Only downside is having to choose. The service was fine, they could have more seats.Always packed when I go, so going during the colder season sucks.
BEST POUTINE AROUND...WHEN YOUR DRUNK...... UNLESS YOU ARE 12 BEERS DEEP AFTER A ROUSING GOOD TIME AT WHISKEY DICKS THEN DONT EAT HERE. This place is for drunk/hangover food. don't walk into this little shack in the exchange and expect life changing poutine.....you're 3 blocks from the "north end"
I will NOT be quitting. We had lunch today at Smoke's for the first time. Staff was friendly and efficient. As first timers I had questions and they were all answered. My girlfriend had the traditional poutine and I had the Hogtown. I was so impressed and stuff with a regular size. Add to that we at Fringe, enjoying live entertainment and a beautiful Winnipeg summer day it was awesome.
The pulled pork poutine is perfect!!! I would recommend not getting the plain poutine your first time. The gravy is too light to have on it's own but it works perfectly with toppings! They also have the best cheese curds I've ever tasted.
Late Night Craving in the Exchange. It was late on a Friday night and the place was looking steady when I had the traditional veggie poutine. After dancin' up a storm, it was a worthy splurge! The wait was maybe three minutes. Perhaps, it was just my craving for gravy and cheese, but I thought it was pretty great (in that terrible-for-your-health kinda way) :) Most importantly, the cheese they used were actual curds, not that shredded crud. The portion you get, I would say is worth the money spent. There are some places (Poutine King) where the amount you get is not worth the ten dollars it costs you. The front counter person was okay. Certainly not exceptional. However, working til' four a.m. on a Friday night and serving mostly obnoxious drunk people can earn a person a pass :P Overall, it was great for what I wanted late night and hungry for bad, bad food... I would have to say though, that if you are there before the sun goes down and are looking for high quality goodness, this may not be the place for you. The fries may turn you off... may.
Amazing choice of poutine. Tasted the pulled pork poutine last night and it is really good. The Wow size ($3 dollar extra), is worth it if you are sharing it with your buddy. Will try a different poutine next time.
I can't move! I love high calorie fare. Smoke's doesn't disappoint. First timers don't let your eyes guide your stomach. The large is "LARGE". My wife had the Philly Cheese Steak and I had the Nacho Grande. Nacho for the win. Both my wife and I preferred the Nacho over the Philly. Next time it's pulled pork. If you want something different then you need to give Smoke's a try.
I went here for the first time on my fiancé's birthday for lunch and wasn't expecting much. We were able to find parking as it was very limited. When we got in, the space was small and seating was tight. It was packed in there but luckily we found a seat. I had the pulled pork poutine and he had the nacho grande poutine. It came in a good size portion and we left full and satisfied. We both had a great first experience and plan to come again sometime. I recommend this place if you love poutines and want to try something new. Its located in the exchange near boutiques & bakeries, great for a nice walk during summer. With all the different selections of poutines on the menu, there will be something for everyone.
This place has been on my radar for sometime. With the sun shinning, it was a beautiful day to explore Winnipeg.
And what better way to top it off then with a stop at this iconic burger joint. I opted for the VJ special and a side of fries.
The burger can be tastefully messy, but it is still a wonderful experience. The copious amount of fries were golden and crispy.
Judging from the size of the burger and the fries, you could certainly share this. If you aren’t into sharing your burger, definitely share the fries.
Johnny and his fam(crew) have been serving their signature delicious value for money burgers for more than 2 decades.
Their delicious chili added moist patty burgers are worth it to stop and have a fricking bite once every few weeks.
Plus so many places around to have a mini snack outside.
It's a simple menu and they are all made with a load of heart and passion.
Johnny and his crew, we love you.
This is one of few great experience I've ever have in the burger category in Wpg. I ordered the cheese burger. From the bread, patty, lettuce, pickles all are align with the hype that I have been hearing about, which is why I am curious and try it. However, the cheese burger is a tad too salty for my taste. On the other hand, the fries! The fries is awesome! No ketchup, no nothing.... just hot sauce, you are good to go! Even without anything, it can still compete with some fries you find in a casual family restaurants.
Settings: drive-in, takeaway order.
4.5 stars!
This place is cash only, unfortunately.
Got the VJ’s special with fries - no complaints. Great burger with fresh toppings, fries were copious and of good quality too, and the taste was very unique. Would definitely go back again.
Absolutely amazing, best burger I've had in a long time and I consider myself somewhat of a burger expert. I've eaten here in the past and the quality from years ago to now has increased a ton. Would give 10 stars if I could. Absolutely incredible and great prices & quanity
my little man loved the fries too!
VJs what can I say, it’s a family owned restaurant with honestly some of the best burgers in the city, it melted in my mouth and every bite was perfect, everything was proper cooked and tasted great, they gave me a free water and I gave them a decent tip for their troubles. They are friendly the staff are nice and it really has a home cooking vibe. Great job and can’t wait to go back to try more I only had a Chance to get a cheese burger but it has been my favourite burger in a long time.
Lived in this city my whole life and driven past this place countless times. Had some time today to stop in on my way through downtown, so I thought, “Let’s do this!” Coming north bound, you can’t turn left, so you just have to compensate for the roadways. Not an issue, just an FYI. Parking was good, as it seems most people aren’t there very long - just getting their food and driving off with it. Not all pricing on the sign is accurate. They have updated pricing on the hand-written signs on the windows. Cost has gone up for everything, so not surprised. Stood in line with some regulars. They were talking about how people who have lived here forever and always drive by finally stop in for the first time. I smiled and raised my hand. I said, “That’s me, today!” The server was very helpful regarding all my questions and I got the scoop on how to order from the regulars in line. Everyone was in a great mood, talking about the delicious food and the great weather.
Cash only. I ordered a ‘Special’ which is a cheeseburger with all the fixings, a fry (one size only) and a chocolate shake. I took the advice of one of the other patrons and got my fries in a box vs a bag as I planned to eat them in my car, en route to my destination and added vinegar and salt right at the counter.
Fries were super crispy and tasty!
Burger was flavourful, but the bun was completely coming apart in my hands. I had to eat it much faster than I would’ve liked and didn’t get to savour the experience. Maybe I’ll eat at the picnic tables next time, as my burger bun won’t have a chance to get too moist and crumbly.
The chocolate shake was thick, which I love. Not easy to find those anymore, for some unknown reason. They had many flavours to choose from, so I might venture to get a peach one next time.
Menu is pretty basic, which isn’t a bad thing. It allows them to process orders fairly quickly.
An overall great experience. I plan on coming back soon!
