After a fun visit to Whytecliff Park, we headed to nearby Horseshoe Bay to grab some lunch and wound up at Troll’s. It’s hard to miss this popular eatery as it’s located right on the corner of Bay Street and Royal Avenue. We were actually thinking of grabbing a light lunch so we ordered the Troll’s Chowder ($12 for the entrée size) and the Cod and Chips ($17 for 2 pieces + additional $6 for 2 pieces of fried oysters). Much to our surprise, when the food arrived at our table, we were taken aback by how large the soup and fish pieces were. The picture really doesn’t do it justice as it’s difficult to comprehend how huge the bowl of soup was.
Stop by Horseshoe Bay for some grub. Wandered around & found this restaurant, great view to watch the ferry. Nice place, staff were friendly, we came early at 11am on a Friday morning. By noon, thenplace was packed. We had the 2 piece Haddock fish & chips... big pieces of fish, nicely done. My friend had the crab cakes. We also ordered the shrimp & bacon club sandwich with a salad. The sandwich was stack high, shrimp was fresh... no fishy smell to it. Nicely done again. All in all, a nice meal.
Fish and Chips was great. I love their tartar sauce, fries and coleslaw. I wish they give more coleslaw as they serve small portion. The Clam Chowder soup is best. This is worth to try at Horseshoe bay while waiting for your ferry.
Troll's fish and chips joint has been around for a long time. That being said, it would be expected to have good food, and it does. The service is friendly, the W/C is clean. The prices are a bit steep, but overall a good place.
Due to a series of (un?)fortunate events, we somehow found ourselves sitting at Troll’s for breakfast on a Friday morning. It all started the night before, where Little Bunny and I booked the Friday off in anticipation of catching the 10:30AM ferry to make our way over to the Black Rock Resort in Ucluelet for my good friend’s wedding. I didn’t bother making a reservation since it wasn’t a long weekend, and I figured there was no chance the ferry would fill up. At some point during the evening we found ourselves in our Halloween costumes (this was 9 days before Halloween) planning a random pub crawl just for the hell of it. Yes, we were drunk, and it sounded like a great idea. Next thing you know, I get a call from a friend saying he had a pair of lower bowl tickets to the Canucks game and asked if we wanted them for free. What the hell!? It was already in the middle of the 1st period, so we got dressed, slammed a few more shots, hopped in a taxi and next thing you know we’re sitting right behind our own net with a pair of drinks each within 30 minutes of the call. Fast forward 12 hours later and we wake up with a WICKED hangover, not quite sure what took place the night prior, and a ferry to catch. We booked it as fast as we could, arriving at the ferry terminal around 10:05 where the sign said it was likely that we’d get on. We waited, slowly approaching the ferry by the minute. We could see the boarding plank, there was only 1 car in front of us before we get on the ferry, and then…. F*!%@(%*!!!!!!! We were waved off and told the ferry was full. Needless to say, I was upset, though mostly with myself for hitting the snooze button earlier in the morning since that would have been the difference. We decided to make the best of it and to explore the ferry terminal village in hopes of finding breakfast and quickly found a little place called Troll’s which seemed reasonably busy.
I read a lot about Trolls living on past glory but I find it the same as when I was a kid. I come from Port Moody for their Manhattan clam chowder because it's the best I've ever had. The fish and chips are consistently good. The staff does seem to get overwhelmed when it gets busy but it's always busy. I'll keep coming back.
Pulled Pork Hash. From the specials menu. Fantastic
I was admittedly a little put off by this place, as I stood by the patio for quite some time, watched a group get sat, while staff continued to rush by me without acknowledging my existence. When someone finally did, I was told I needed to go inside to the hostess stand, where several people had started to pile up in front of me during my wait. I expressed some dissatisfaction with the scenario, and was seated and served immediately.
The staff from this point on were lovely, attentive and efficient, and single handedly turned the experience around for me. I have been in the service industry for over a decade, and can really appreciate good service, especially when busy.
The food was decent. I had the halibut and chips, and was very pleased with the quality of the fish. The gravy was lumpy, and the Caesar salad was completely underwhelming, but the price point was indicative of this - good value for what I got.
I would come back, definitely. It's a pleasant place to be while waiting for a ferry, and I would like to thank the staff for making it so. If I was basing this review solely on the food, it may have looked a bit different. Job well done :)
Still amazing: Troll's and Bowen. Have been coming to Troll's over the years, and always love it. Visited on a recent Saturday lunchtime and immediately was given an outside table with a gorgeous view of the mountains and ferries coming and going. Service may have been a little slow, but the place was wonderful and the food, when it arrived, very good. Had lunch with my son, and then walked over to the ferry for Bowen Island, where we took a long, lovely walk through the trees up to Killarney Lake. Highly recommend Troll's and Bowen for a summer afternoon!
Went in for lunch on a Sunday and there was a lineup at the door. Hostess took our name, and ensured we knew there was roughly a 20 minute wait for food. We were seated quickly and had a beautiful view of the bay. Waitress was very busy, however still ensured that our questions were answered and cups were always full. I had the salmon, and my friend had the fish and chips (cod). Food arrived in less than 15 minutes and was DELICIOUS! Overall experience was great! Not sure why restaurant is rated as low as it is.
