Food acceptable, service slow. My husband and I had a Groupon which we used for the meal. We ordered a spinach fritter appy, chicken biryani, fish stringhoppers, and mutton roti kotthu. The roti kotthu is highly recommended. Next best item is the biryani which had a serious spice kick, which I liked. The fish for the stringhoppers was very small in quantity and not that fresh, ie. a bit fishy. We were happy with the food, but service is indifferent. The one waitress there did not check on us after the food arrived, meaning I had to ask to get water. Ambiance is dark, not that welcoming. I recommend the food, and would eat there again, but maybe as take out.
The food was quite tasty. Caution the curries are quite spicy even for my tasting and I like spicy food. We used a voucher here so we managed to try many menu items while paying a fraction of the cost. Three times we came without making a reservation and left because the restaurant was closed! Luckily we finally got to try this! I will highly recommend the masala dosa with chicken tasty and large portion! We tried the mutton curry with rice and three different types of vegetables (my favorite), the rhattu with beef (a little on the tough side of the dough), mango lassi which is small for the price but very satisfying, milk dosa very sour taste to it and the deep fried banana ice cream. The service is very slow as thy only have one helper and the restaurant is packed! The food comes out fairly quickly once the first dish comes out. I would go back to try the mutton again!
Food was authentically delicious! The waiter was genuinely friendly and described the menu well. We got our food quickly, but waited a long time for dessert and the bill. We weren't in a hurry, but it was unusually slow. All those around us waited a long time to order and get food.
Good Food. After reading the other reviews, we did not know what to expect. What we got was real ethnic food served by people who cared. Yes, the service was slow and the young waitress (daughter of the owner) wasn't very good at describing the menu but she was warm and friendly. When it arrived, the food was worth the wait and the price was right. Dinner for 3 with a drink each for $70 including tip. Be careful with the spices. None of the dishes seem hot with the first bite but they creep up on you.
Definitely will go back again.
Excellent meal. Our family of four visited with a voucher and some doubts having read other reviews. However all the dishes were freshly prepared and excellent in quality. Almost every dish was a completely new taste experience for us. We ate every mouthful and plan to return soon. The service was not as attentive as we would have liked; the restaurant decor is simple.
Get an education... It's not Indian food, it's Sri Lankan food. they're two different countries. who are th untraveled, provincial pple who write for this website? hicks.
Sri Lankan gem. I went here on a Friday and had their 5 vegetable curry special. Excellent choice of vegetables all individually prepared with different spices. Some can be deceptively very hot - 'just looks like kale but ... whew - what was in that?' If you're concerned specify your spice level. Unlike a lot of Indian food there are no thick, muddy curries/butter chicken type sauces - the kind of Indian restaurants where you get pretty well the same sauce no matter what you order. Here every dish here has a separate specially crafted spice/sauce/dressing. Gazing over the menu you will notice that though the restaurant doesn't advertise itself as vegetarian or vegan there were all kinds of vegetarian and even vegan dishes - not a lot of dairy in the cooking style. The vegetable curries I ordered in particular were the best vegetarian/vegan meal I've ever had - I'm a Chinese food fanatic because of the vegetables but the dishes I had here inched out even the freshest Chinese preps - part of the reason being no oil/no frying but even when compared to steamed Chinese vegetables which are awesome these were 'awesome plus.' However, meat eaters shouldn't be wary - there are all kinds of meat and fish dishes on the menu as well.
There were a lot of interesting items I want to try at some other point e.g. noodle type dishes called stringhoppers, Super reasonable prices. I will be going back many times to work through this menu as about 75% of items I've never run across before in a dozen years of eating Indian food in Vancouver of all styles from VIj's to the All-India buffet.
Awesome find , homestyle Sri lankan and s Indian cuisine. Super friendly. Highly recommended
This Sri Lankan restaurant is near the corner of Knight and Kingsway. The area isn't exactly classy, so I didn't have much expectation when I walked in. There was no one there apart from a couple of people playing with a baby (note the baby chair in the picture below), but they weren't eating and were probably the owner's relatives or friends. Ok... so it was a Tuesday night, but not even a single table shortly after 7 pm? It wasn't until we left at around 9 pm that another couple walked in for a late dinner. A man whom I assumed to be the owner greeted us with menus and a friendly smile. We tried 3 different drinks in total: (from left to right) ginger tea ($1.50), authentic Sri Lankan style milk tea ($1.50), and mango lassi ($3.99). The ginger tea and milk tea (or coffee) are usually complimentary with the meal, but we had to pay because we used a deal voucher. Both teas were made with the same tea leaves, but one was steeped with ginger and the other infused with milk. I found the g
