I got the pho combo: small pho tai nam + spring roll ($10). The soup base is on the sweeter side and not very strong with beef flavour. I found that the meat portion was on the small side given the price. (Solo small pho $8.50). It came with a side dish of lemon, jalapeño, bean sprouts, basil leaves. Odd that it came with lemon since it's usually lime. The spring roll was crispy, juicy and also slightly sweet. The fish sauce presence is strong with this restaurant.
On a cool, wet and drab Friday night, with no inclination to cook, we decided to go out for dinner and get some comfort food in the form of a hot bowl of noodle soup. Our first choice of restaurant was strangely closed on this day, so our next choice was Pho Hong on Fraser St (at East 49th Avenue). It was pretty quite on this evening, and were seated immediately at a small table by the entrance. The place is a hole-in-the-wall type restaurant.
Not one of my favourite Vietnamese restaurants but food is decent and it is authentic Vietnamese restaurant. I normally order the rice that comes with egg and pork chops pr bun bo hue here. My friend ordered the pho here and he said it tastes not bad.
My usual PHO place. Soup is sometimes inconsistent but does not taste as salty as most pho places. More sweet than salty but very yummy. Spring rolls are very crunchy. Their lemongrass chicken is done really well, too.
Good Pho-od. I regularly visit Pho Hong for their "special" (large soup noodle with spring roll for $8.75, which saves $.25 over ordering the two things separately, haha). The usual order is pho with beef brisket (I think it's the #8 on their menu). The pho is always a good level of chewiness, and it is served with a good size complement of brisket. Good flavour to the beef broth, although it's clearly got a lot of salt or MSG in it as I'm always thirsty afterwards. The spring rolls are crispy and light. I always feel like I want one more bite of spring roll when I'm finished.
The restaurant itself is pretty dark & dingy, but usually pretty busy. The service ranges from average to terrible, depending on who you get. Easy to overlook this shortcoming as the food is fast to arrive, and from start to finish it's usually a 20-25 minute dine in experience. It's a decent value, as I'm always full, but there's never any leftovers.
Love the place!!!!!!. Mom and I often go there at lunch for their noodles. Exceptional food. Exceptional service. Exceptional environment. The place is so relaxing that you can forget about outside Fraser Street for a moment. Even we moved from Vancouver to Burnaby, the place is our first choice for Vietnamese noodles. Recently I ordered their Vietnamese coffee. Zillion times better than the other restaurant. (You can refer to my other review) At least they provide more milk to the coffee. Also the coffee filter is working properly. The other one is stuck.
Nice cozy room.. Friendly if somewhat incompetent service. The beef broth was good, though the rare beef was no longer rare when it arrived. Possibly because the broth was served at a temperature suitable for separating base metals. I would order the meat raw on the side next time and let it cook at the table.
Good lunch deal includes a decent spring roll with a large Pho for $8.50. They ration napkins. Cash only.
