You're coming here for authentic Vietnamese food not ambience.
This is one of the few authentic Vietnamese restaurants that is known for their special grilled beef dishes that are available after 3pm: Beef 3 ways, Beef 7 ways. Must try items. Another pleasant surprise is the rice pudding with toppings served a metal tart shell!
Their pho soup noodles are good - brisket is delicious! The vermicelli bowl with marinated pork patty and spring rolls ($9.50). I will definitely come back and try their other stuff.
Everyone that comes here only comes here for 2 things. The bo 7 mon, and the bun bo hue. Every chinese family comes in to order the beef 7 course. It's fun to play with your food. You get hands on rolling up your food with the rice sheets, and the beef is delicious. Peppery, garlicky, and moist. The bo nuong la lot is grilled beef wrapped in betel leaves and man OH MAN, I'd dance all day to eat this! Now the bun bo hue is spicy and savory. Here's a tip, make sure when you order this or any pho bowl in general, ask for your sprouts RAW. They get alot of Chinese people asking for cooked sprouts and if they spot that your chinese they will assume everytime you want your sprouts steamed. The bun bo hue is huge and comes in a glass bowl. This bowl can feed two people! Service is adequate and good. Prices include tax already.
The fried spring rolls had alot of batter on them, not the best. The lemongrass grilled chicken is ok but no wow factor, comes with soup.
It's better to just stick with the 7 beef course and bun bo hue, trust me.
The "Beef 3 Courses" is a must try, if only for the fun experience of wrapping your own salad rolls (said beef also happens to be very delicious). On the menu it says it's enough for 2, but it easily fed my party of 3. Their $2 cold drink/spring roll add-on to any rice/noodle is a good deal too.
It wasn't too busy on a weekday night, service was decent, and parking was easy to find in the back. I'm also guessing they've brought in some new staff since the older reviews, as our waitress spoke excellent English!
This was the first time I ever had Chè Ba Màu. Usually I stay away from cold drinks but that day was pretty hot and with it costing only an additional $2.00, I could get the dessert as an extra instead of paying $3.00. Why not? When it arrived, I was having a bit of trouble trying to mix it. There was a lot of ice and taking out my spoon and straw required some care. I really liked the taste of the dessert though, not too sweet, and love those beans, as well as the fun green grass jelly! Just wish that there were less ice and more ingredients. But for that price, I guess I can’t complain much. Mr. H: Nothing quite like a nice, cold cold drink to help you forget about scorching sun outside ! Oh yeah, I don’t really like Mr. Sun… but I did like the beans hiding inside this dish… oh
