People seem to either hate or love this place so I had to check it out. Me? I fell in love as soon as I went inside and saw that tall red staircase with that beautiful looming chandelier. Yes, perhaps it is a little musty with all that partying history but that is not a reason not to go to The Emerald Supper Club. Rarely will you come across a place that is so retro, so cool.
The service was a little cool and so was my food, however. My BBQ Pork Waffle Fry Poutine was barely warm so I had to wolf it down before The Hard Rock Miners Singalong began. I totally loved the goat cheese dip with caramelized onions, super tasty and the homemade potato chips were super crisp. I can see why most people talk about the waffle fries. This place knows how to deep fry.
Despite having some issues with the food, the music venue was fantastic (call ahead to make reservations if you want to be sure to see the band) and the setting so much fun. I don't think I have ever been to quite a fantastically retro place before. I loved every second of it and can't wait to go back.
Fellow food blogger and drink enthusiast, “Picky Diner” has been going on about this supper club. This is one of his favourites spots in the city for happy hour, and I can now see why. After a handful of failed attempts to visit together, including stopping by on a Monday when they are closed, we finally made it through the green door tonight.
It took several invitations from Justine before I finally said yes and made it to The Emerald. All cocktails half priced for Happy Hour sounded awesome, but it took a bit of convincing for me to move my lazy ass from Downtown core to the east border of Chinatown on a Friday afternoon.
And I have been loving this place since! With a prosaic entrance barely unnoticeable on a street block, occupied mostly by a Chinese fish market, finding the inside of The Emerald reminds me of a scene from The Matrix, in which the rebellious heroes spot a small door in an overwhelming pedestrian chaos, and walk into a virtual world of marvel. But in this reality, we are presented with a retro Las Vegas styled supper club, with dazzling crystal chandeliers, red velvet and golden finishing. And the classic cocktails here are awesome!
