Great food and great service. Weekdays are better than weekends.
Absolutely fine. Felt like a nice old school Cantonese restaurant (and indeed, I've been here with my family for dim sum and dinner many years ago). For the three of us, we managed three mains with rice (and a small take-out container) and got complimentary red bean soup. The halibut, in soya sauce, stir-fried crispy with cauliflowers and onions was good; the singing chicken hotpot had really great flavours; the taro and duck dish gave us great nostalgia as a dish that we love but don't find so often. All up less than $60 for the three of us for dinner. The place was nicely filling up on Tuesday night, early: good for them. Nice to see people out supporting their local restaurants in this tough market.
We were in search of dim sum, and “Golden Ocean” was chosen for its accessibility. Truth be told, I don’t often choose my Chinese restaurants, nor do I order myself. Typically, both of those matters I leave to my family, as I don’t normally visit Chinese restaurants outside of family gatherings. So it was nice to dine with friends and see what they and their families order and love.
Golden Ocean Seafood Restaurant is located on 41st and East Boulevard.
We would say it is our favourite Chinese restaurant in West of Arbutus. We love they serve the dim sum in push cart. The prices are very reasonable. Services still have rooms to improve. We definitely will go back for dim sum.
Love the XO turnip cake because its not deep fried like other places. Had the other standard dim sum like fried dough fritter rice rolls the dough fritter is a bit too oily but was okay. The prawn ball with almond was good!
We came here just before 10 am on a Sunday. There were only a handful of tables with patrons. By 11am, the place was full with over 10 people waiting. The dim sum here was reasonable good. The ones served by the cart or hand carried trays are the common ones. There are a lot of dim sum items on the menu, which we liked more. These items can be ordered from any of the staff. There's also a good selection of desserts.
In the heart of Kerrisdale, Golden Ocean is beating heart of Chinese Dim Sum in this neighbourhood.
Dimsum is still served in traditional push carts. Very authentic traditional Cantonese dining.
Service is friendly but also blunt like most Chinese restaurants. And like most Chinese cuisines, foods can be greasy and salty, but dishes are very flavorful.
Negatives: long wait times and waiting area can be quite packed and cold. Fighting for room in the waiting area can be bothersome with other rude customers. Especially those families with Phillipionos men wearing makeup.
Loving this place's great 20% off before 11am deal. Great marketing tool that seems to be working because this place is pretty packed.
First taste was sticky rice, which was quite moist and tasteful, had some hard parts of rice but that was quite minuscule. Favourite part of the meal was definitely the egg tart. Nice and warm with a rich smooth flavour. One unfortunate thing is the somewhat high prices. Definitely want to come back here though.
After a two month break dim sum club is back! Actually, I’m not really sure if I can call it a club when only three of us showed up. Nonetheless, Kili the Dwarf, Lapin en Cocotte, and I decided to meet up for some dim sum on a Saturday morning the week before Kili was moving down to Seattle. Lapin en Cocotte was pushing for us to return to Fisherman’s Terrace, since it’s one of her favorite restaurants for dim sum, but I was feeling like a lazy bum and didn’t want to have to venture all the way into Richmond. Instead I suggested Golden Ocean Seafood Restaurant since it was located close by and had good reviews. So off we went to stuff our faces.
Perfect balance between quality, quantity, and price. Very good first impressions of the dimsum here. It's very rare to find a Chinese restaurant that scores high in price, quality, AND service. The food is very authentic and traditional Cantonese; as a Cantonese person myself, this is exciting! Dimsum is still served in push carts here, but you can place an order for items not rolling about. Every item we tried was of good quality and had balanced flavours (not too salty, greasy, or sweet). Shrimp dumplings were firm and full of prawns, no nasty fillers here! Portions are also generous. Prices are very affordable, despite being in Kerrisdale. Service was also bright and friendly; even as first time customers, we were treated like old friends. I will definitely be coming back because the food is so good, even if it requires a long drive!
Solid dim sum all these years. I've been to this Dim sum Restaurant for so many years, and their dim sum quality is consistently good (unlike some other restaurants). The shrimp dumpling (Har Gou) and Pea shoot dumpling (with Shrimp filling and pea shoot) are must order dim sum. They also keep the dim sum cart which you don't see very often in other dim sum restaurants. They are very busy but definitely worth the wait.
Verdict:
Food: 9/10 (consistently good)
Service: 8/10 (very attentive staff, they refill your water as soon as they spot that empty tea kettle)
Price: 7/10 (a bit pricey if ordering dim sum in regular price, but they have 20% off before ordering dim sum at 11am)
Overall: 24/30 (very good dim sum place)
