The place is small and very basic but the food is so great that it does not matter. The portions are big and it is great to share a couple of dishes with another person. You can always take home what you can not finish. I usually do
Ok, try not to a judge a book by its cover. Does not look like much based on appearances. Just a blink-and-you-miss-it, small divey hole in the wall type of place on Commercial. Not the tidiest, cleanest, sparkliest palace of a place. But these joints can be like finding a diamond in the rough. I can sorta overlook dark + dingy if food is worth it. Based on reviews here looks like other people have discovered this place too (which may account for why quality and portion size have changed lately...but with my visit it was good value for what I was served).
This is just really authentic Indian "street food".
The counter staff (whom I assume are the owners) are straight-faced and stoic and mean all business but can be helpful at choosing dishes. Not sure of cleanliness when I saw handling of both food and cash without a hand wash, plus chopping up of raw chicken next to cooked food, and the bathroom was no comment...
Street food.
If you can turn a blind eye to all that...
Curries are very good. Tad oily but rich and flavourful. The Prawn Masala is a fav. Can't go wrong with anything really. Just eat-in/take-out and enjoy hot and fresh (I don't recommend delivery!!!). The clay oven (tandoor) naan is warm, soft and most of all large and mmmm so good.
High marks for food
Low marks for presentability
This is our favourite Indian place in Vancouver. They have the best naan, and great curries. The only drawback is that most of their curries have alot of oil. The service is also really good and they're great with making dishes without allergens, such as dairy. My favourite dish from this place is their prawn marsala. You get a lot of prawns and the sauce is really good with their naan. Their eggplant is also super delicious. Just be careful if you get takeout, their naan goes bad fast and isn't very good if you don't eat it super fresh.
