Best BBQ house in town, in my opinion! Highly recommend to all [if you're not a boring and lame Vegan, of course].
Probably the best pulled pork I've ever tasted, along with delicious ribs and the fried chicken is up there, with my ultimate favorite ..LA Chicken in Richmond.
Pass on the biscuits, and get all cornbread! Oh ..and don't forget to order extra of their homemade gravy - it goes well with everything :)
My partner is a fan of a good barbecue. We have been to a few all around the Lower Mainland, so today we were giving “Dixie’s” on Hastings a try. They are known for their Texas style barbecue and show their allegiance through the restaurant’s decor. It has a well themed rugged look with a worn wood pallet ceiling, a wagon wheel chandelier, and red brick and sheet metal walls.
Move over, Memphis Blues, there's a new gunslinger in town! Seriously good BBQ! No sauce in sight as this is Texas style, but you won't miss it. The brisket is the best I've ever had; fork tender and moist, with a crispy crust. The fried chicken is also the best I've had, crunchy boneless with a very juicy & tender interior. Sides were good, especially the Serrano Cheese Spinach, but don't order it under the illusion that it's healthy. If you need something to counter the meat, I'd go for the coleslaw, however the cabbage shreds are long so it makes for messy eating. Service is friendly. Downside, can be a bit noisy, especially on game night.
Ordered:
1 lb Brisket
1 lb Pork Ribs
1 Fried Chicken Bucket (no actual bucket, though...)
Serrano Cheese Spinach
Cornbread
Smoked Brisket Beans
Coleslaw
2 drinks
Big meal for 3 guys, with leftovers: $100
We went on a rainy Sunday night, although there was no lineup, the word on this place is starting to get around, so reserve, if you can. Soon it will be THE place for bbq in Vancouver!
We'll be back!
***UPDATE***
Second time around, not so much. Despite being reassured that the brisket was "just made," it was dry. And the chicken was smaller than on our first visit. Consistency is tough to maintain, I guess...
Arrived on a Friday night. It was busy but we were seated quickly. Servers are friendly and service was quick. The portions are huge (we had the buttermilk fried chicken and pulled pork with 2 sides, corn bred and beans). The chicken was delicious, thick with buttermilk crispy coating and the chicken was. boneless. Pulled pork was flavourful without BBQ sauce hiding the taste. So good with the country gravy too. I would recommend Dixie's. Their special of the day was a sandwich and a beer for $15. That is a great deal.
Located on East Hastings in an area some might call unsavoury but I would describe more as terrifying, word on the street is that Dixie’s serves their meat from a trough. This is a challenge if I ever heard one and no true FEF is going to turn their back on what is clearly a greater calling.
Fate must have been playing a cruel joke on us this night though because guess which group strolled in fifteen minutes after the BBQ shut down at 10. Zero troughs in sight, we had our pick of the late night menu.
I went with bourbon and would highly suggest it. It was refreshing and sweetened just the right amount. Cornbread and Serrano Cheese Spinach. I didn’t care for the corn bread because I found it to be too dry and hard. I prefer a more crumbly, buttery corn bread. I rarely rave about vegetable dishes, but the Serrano cheese spinach was delicious. I loved the creamy rich flavour and the fact that it had a bit of spice to it. I would highly recommend getting this as a side.
Easily the best BBQ I've had in Vancouver. In fact, it is on the same level as highly regarded restaurants I've visited in Texas and New Orleans. I can't give a higher compliment than that. As for BBQ restaurants in Seattle and Calgary that I've tried, Dixie's is on another planet. There is love and attention to detail in this food. For example, they use three kinds of wood in the smoker. We tried the brisket, ribs, and a regular link. All perfect as were the coleslaw, potato salad and pickle sides. Pecan pie with maple whipped cream was excellent. The staff were very friendly, attentive and enthusiastic about the BBQ wonders on offer. Portions and prices are very fair. Look forward to returning. Highly recommended!
Came here today for first time. The BBQ was beyond good and probably the best I've had in Vancouver ! The sides are really good for three bucks Each. The sweet tea is homemade and so yummy will be back for sure ! A+
I've only been here for brunch so far and have enjoyed it each time. Staff is friendly, and the portion size is decent for the price. Small menu, but good quality food. What else can you want? Hopefully more people show up to enjoy this place, as it's been pretty quiet on each visit.
Came here on a Sunday night, and I loved it! The brisket was so tender, ribs were delicious, and I absolutely LOVED their homemade pickles! Would recommend it to anyone that's in the mood for some good old bbq. Good job!
