A little trip down memory lane to my days in Vancouver, when I enjoyed a hearty breakfast with my friends after our exams...Small diner style restaurants have always fascinated me, due to their personalized home-style service, the cozy and comfortable atmosphere, amazing food, and great prices. @jethrosfinegrub is one such place and it was a perfect way to end the school year on a high with good food and great company.
On the Menu:
Jethro’s French Toast.
Thick cut challah bread, dipped in egg, and griddled crisp. Topped with whipped butter. When they say thick, they meant thick, the bread was beautifully soaked in the batter and tasted brilliant.
Price: CAD 8 / AED 22

Grandma’s Pancakes.
Cinnamon apples baked into their buttermilk pancake batter. Topped with streusel and served with whipped butter. These babies were delicious, and the warm apples, and the crunchy streusel were the most amazing combination. Also, butter makes everything AWESOME!!!

I’ve heard through the grapevine that Jethro’s got big portions to satisfy any large breakfast cravings that you may have. Multi-stack pancakes the size of your plate? Gigantic omelettes? I thought there must be some exaggeration to the claims but little did I know, they were far from exaggerated.

This is a casual diner located serving up Southern-style comfort food in big portions. I had previously visited their Dunbar location, which had unfortunately recently closed down. During my visit to their Fraser location, I got their Rooster Pancakes a side of Biscuits & Gravy, and a side of their Pulled Pork. While I was disappointed in the pulled pork, which I found to be very bland, their Rooster Pancakes and Biscuits & Gravy were quite good, and served in very generous portions - I'm a big eater, and I still had enough food left over for a second meal. The service is also very good for the type of place it is: the server I had was very friendly and attentive. All in all, I'd recommend checking this place out for some affordable and reasonably tasty diner food. Just be warned, they do only take cash or debit (I know that their site appears to say they accept visa as well, but that's not the case).

The Rooster ($14):
3.5/5
This consisted of two buttermilk pancakes that are stuffed with chocolate chips and are topped with whipped cream. Jethro's are known for having probably the largest pancakes in Vancouver, with each pancake being about 2-3 times larger than most places. I quite liked the texture, with the pancakes being quite light and fluffy. Previously, I've had issues with the overpowering flavour of baking soda; this time around, it actually wasn't nearly as bad (I could still taste it, but it wasn't nearly as strong). I loved the chocolate chips, which were sweet and gooey - I do wish that they had more of it present. I do have to mention that the top pancake is better than the bottom one, which is much flatter (perhaps from being squished by the top one) and smaller. Of course, with all the other food that I had ordered, I was not able to make much of a dent into my pancakes and ended up taking most of the dish home in their pizza-sized boxes.

Side Biscuits & Gravy ($6):
3.5/5
This consisted of two large pieces of biscuits smothered in gravy. The gravy was a bit overly thick, but was not gummy and still quite enjoyable. The biscuits had quite a hard outer crust (you can't cut through it; you have to pick the biscuit up and bite it), but a relatively tender interior. While neither the biscuits nor the gravy were particularly salty on its own, I did find that when eaten together it does get a bit too much (and I'm one who loves salt). It is quite filling, and a very good deal for only $6.

Side Pulled Pork ($4):
2.5/5
The pork was quite tender and juicy. Unfortunately, it was seriously underseasoned: it was just flavourless and bland on its own. I did enjoy it with my side of biscuits however.

Summary:
Food: 3/5
Price: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: Rooster Pancakes, Biscuits & Gravy, Banana Bread French Toast (from previous visit)

Jethros Fine Grub has good food with an all day breakfast. It is not open for supper. It was cramped and noisy inside, and I suspect that the small capacity is the reason the chairs are so rock hard: to keep people from just sitting there with their mobile phone or talking instead of eating while others wait outside. I do not recommend the 'La Nina' Eggs Benedict because it is rather soggy, but the other Eggs Benedict dishes are good.

Very very filling! Really small place so be prepared to lineup! Pretty good food, very flavourful, borderline salty but still worth it! I highly suggest the pancakes!!

I love the food and service here. Delicious variety of breakfast food and the service was top notch. Server forgot to bring the milk for my coffee and I waited until my coffee was lukewarm. When she realized she brought the coffee, switched my coffee for a hot one and brought me a full cup of to-go cup of coffee as well so I can take it on the go. I appreciated it and she made up for her mistake. For food - you can't go wrong ordering anything on the menu. Portions are huge and the hash browns are the bfs all time favorites.
I docked a mark in the rating because we were sat at the corner table. Right behind me was a spider size of a quarter that crawled up and down that wall right behind me. By the time I flagged a waitress it crawled up into a small hole on the top hole and disappeared...

This is the second location of Jethro’s and the lesser known one, so the line up was not as crazy as the Dunbar location. We ordered the Crab Cake Benedict and Apple Cobbler French Toast. With two coffees, our bill ended up to be just under $30 before tax and tips. It’s not cheap based on price tag but judging by its portion size this is priced quite reasonably. The dishes aren’t super fancy but are true to Jethro’s diner style. I had my eyes set on a few other items on the menu and would come back again.

I had high hopes for this place as so many foodies rave about the food here. Besides the price, I think the food is really just mediocre. I decided to try out the newest location on Fraser Street and then do a comparison with the flagship store at Point Grey. . Jethro’s French Toast $8.00

Photographed: The Gold Rush banana caramel pecan streusel pancakes from Jethro’s at their Fraser Street location. Fluffy!!! Their pancakes are really best ordered when in a large group and shared from my past experiences ordering pancakes here. Otherwise, there is just no way to eat the entire thing by yourself in one go as it is just so filling. You can take it home, but I find that it just isn’t as appealing at home and best eaten fresh. If I’m not craving pancakes, I go for their huevos rancheros or breakfast burrito which, be warned, is also huge! Line ups are out the door on the weekends.

[03/15/16] We were so satisfied after this meal and it was hard to believe that we spent less than $15 per dish. The portions were ginormoussss but the quality doesn't compromise and everything tasted pretty good. I would definitely recommend this place for brunch- their eggs are done so well! Just a fair warning though.. don't be too ambitious of your appetite because their giant pancakes will mostly likely defeat you. (;
