I have a gluten allergy. I did not get glutened at Virtuous Pie.
I have to give major props to Virtuous Pie. As someone with both a gluten and dairy allergy, I was prepared to never eat "real" 'za again. Then I heard about VP and I was so excited to try it. When I arrived at the resto however, my dreams turned pie-in-the-sky when I saw cooks spreading sauce and toppings over the regular crusts and then dipping back into the containers.
"OK - this is not gluten-free." I thought, "This is cross-contamination city." I was about to turn around and walk out when my friend suggested we ask the cooks about their preparation process for the g-free pies. The cook we spoke with was exceptionally knowledgeable about gluten-free food prep practices. VP really does everything they can (short of making the pizza in a dedicated kitchen) to avoid contamination. They pull NEW, uncontaminated sauce and toppings from the fridge, clean all prep surfaces, and have a dedicated side of the oven to bake the g-free ‘za. From ordering, to prep, to baking, to cutting, the staff clearly communicate with one another that this pie is for someone with a gluten allergy.
When the pizza arrived, I was still trepidatious as even a little gluten can wreck my week but I forged ahead and dug in. The food was delicious and I did not get glutened! Since then, I've ordered take-out through DoorDash. On my order, I indicated that I have celiac's and requested that new sauces and toppings were used. After I placed my order, I also called VP directly to ensure they understood my request. Once again, the pizza was great and I did not get glutened. It’s always a gamble dining out with food allergies but VP really does their best to ensure that cross-contamination does not occur.
Thanks Virtuous Pie for bringing vegan, gluten-free pizza to Vancouver!
As a vegan I loved this place, food was fantastic!! Probably the best vegan pizza I've had but coeliacs be warned they make no effort to prevent contamination of the gluten free food. They should really call it less gluten as nothing is actually gluten free.
A surprise last minute visit from L and J meant lunch somewhere new. We debated on a few spots but eventually settled on Virtuous Pie. They specialize in plant-based pizza (all 10″ individual sized) and ice cream. Sign outside. #Pizzabod is the new dadbod eh?. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 1:30pm). The inside is modern with three communal style tables, three stools to people watch and a couple seats outside on their mini-patio.
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
+4
We have been wanting to try Virtuous Pie for some time but I had not realized that it was full on vegan! We arrived Saturday just before noon at their location in Chinatown to a full house, picked up our passport and placed an order. Service is counter order then counter pickup when your food is ready! Seating is somewhat communal with long tables and benches and a few seats at the front window and comfortable enough. We started with their Roast Harissa Cauliflower that came with a Paprika Aioli. I am not sure what the vegan version of an aioli is but it was very good.We also ordered the Ultraviolet Pizza. It came with walnut and arugula pesto , cashew mozzarella, oven dried tomatoes, kale, caramelized onions and pine nuts. This was genuinely a pie that I could eat on a regular basis. The crust was very good with the nice little charred areas. They are baking these things in one of the 900 degree, 90 second ovens (Don't quote me on that. I didn't check the numbers. I just watched.) that is the basis of great pizza. The cashew cheese was nice and provided that melty element while the rest of the toppings provided a slightly minimalist but lovely experience. Just don't show up expecting a mountain of cheese and pepperoni and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Finally, we had to try their plant based ice cream! One scoop turns out to be actually two scoops and we tried two of their flavours, Marion-berry Cheesecake and Key Lime. The first pleasant surprise was that the key lime did not arrive in the traditional neon green! Again, I am not sure of the vegan ice cream process but these were both excellent tasting with an ever so slightly more crystalline structure (not quite as creamy as the dairy stuff). We loved it! Honorable mention goes to the Sparkle Mouth Ginger Ale that we shared. It has genuine ginger in it unlike the stuff we grew up drinking, and strong ginger flavour! A lunch without guilt! Minimum damage to the planet and our health were caused in the making of this blog post! And my wallet did not fare badly either. Thanks Virtuous Pie!
Sorry for the long absence in posting…one thing after another kept coming up and well…that’s history now lol. Anyways, onto this adventure! During one of the many heat waves of the past summer, a friend and I had heard rave things about the Virtuous Pie at UBC and wanted to try it, without actually heading to UBC, so to the Chinatown location we went!
Totally loved this place! Being gluten free and dairy free this was great. Totally felt like "real" cheese. Would recommend to anyone. Vegan or not.
140 characters summary: Pizza that is different but tastes amazing. I would come back and how busy it was after 8 pm is a solid indication that this place is dope. My Instagram feed is always filled with pictures of people having pizza at Virtuous Pie. Vegans and non-vegans alike seem to really enjoy the food here.
AMAZING!!! Im am always curious to try new vegan joints and this place was such a great choice! The vibe and decor was great but the pizzas stole the show!
I would definitely recommend the Kim jack and stranger wings. Who knew cashew cheese would be this delicious! I'm just blown away by his place. Definitely recommend this place to any pizza lover, meat lovers included.
Everything here is plant based...even the cheese! We came here during their Friday night happy hour and they sure were busy. We ordered the super funghi and the kimkama pizza...20 minutes later they finally called us to grab the pizza. Lots of people came for take out as well. Too bad I already had earnest icecream in the afternoon otherwise I would order their icecream flight because they have some very interesting flavours. Oh well there's always next time.
Can't wait to try every pizza on this menu! Have tried the super fungi and the Buffalo cauliflower pizzas and both were amazing! Crust is thin and crispy and delicious. Ingredients are fresh and tasty, and the size is perfect for one person (even though I could easily eat 2 to myself hehe) such a great vegan place with delicious options. Will return over and over!
Virtuous Pie has reminded me of what years of lactose intolerancey has deprived me of. These pizzas are incredibly delicious, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! The only downfall is the long lines, I can see a larger or at least second restaurant in their near future because this place is constantly que'd up to the door. They need to find a more efficient way of taking orders, ateast for their ice cream. It's really a hassle having 20 people wait in line while an undecided customer samples mini spoons of ice cream.
This is a cool place to check out. It has nice decor and feels bright and welcoming. It isn't a large space but good for catching up with someone. The way it works is you order and pay and then they'll call your name when it's ready. You can also order it to go.
I tried the super funghi and the med. The pizzas are a good size for a personal pizza. The crust is nice and crisp but not too much. The med had good flavour, but I found it a little bit salty. But I enjoyed the falafel and mint chutney. The super funghi was okay. Nothing too special about it. I do want to go back and try more of their pizzas. Also their presentation on the slabs is pretty neat. For dessert, I had their matcha coconut ice cream. I probably will just stick to their pizzas. The coconut flavour was too strong so I couldn't taste much matcha. Overall a great option for plant based pizzas. They have great flavours and interesting toppings.
Absolutely love this place. It's always a tad difficult when traveling to find vegan places. And this vegan place is so wonderful. Extremely friendly staff!!! Very clean restaurant. Price was so worth, and they have happy hour. Delicious food!!!! Absolutely worth a visit.
I got the holiday pie and it tasted delicious! It's a funky pizza but every bite was better than the last. I liked that they donate a dollar Sheway (social services for women in Vancouver) for every holiday pie! I also had some garlic knots and tried the forager pizza. Would come back for more vegan pizza in the future.
Pizza was amazing quality and portions were appropriate! We got "Pepperoni", "Pie-rogi", and "Sweet Pepper + Sausage". Staff was friendly. Atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, not too loud. Great location as well!
Plant based Zaa and ice cream?! Is this still earth?! Ahhh Shyaaa it is!
If you ever needed a reason to cross over to other side, this might be it. The vail is very thin nowadays.
Thank you for your service to this planet VP.
Xox
Even though I'm not vegan (not full time at least), I was surprised by the taste and quality of the dishes. We had pizzas and carbonara, both highly recommended.
Loved the garlic knots and the dough was really good - not fussy about the sausage crumble on my pizza but I’ll defy give it another go. Service was quick and friendly.
The best
I love their mac and cheese and All the pizzassssssssss good pricing! Fresh ingredients perfect!!!
Loved this pizza! The kids and adults were happy and full. The ingredients and sauces were on point and the app keeps you informed of progress.
We recommend getting one pizza per person, but get different types to mix and match flavors.
