Review Virtuous Pie - Vancouver

Absolutely love this place. It's always a tad difficult when traveling to find vegan places. And this vegan place is so wonderful. Extremely friendly staff!!! Very clean restaurant. Price was so worth, and they have happy hour. Delicious food!!!! Absolutely worth a visit.

I got the holiday pie and it tasted delicious! It's a funky pizza but every bite was better than the last. I liked that they donate a dollar Sheway (social services for women in Vancouver) for every holiday pie! I also had some garlic knots and tried the forager pizza. Would come back for more vegan pizza in the future.

Pizza was amazing quality and portions were appropriate! We got "Pepperoni", "Pie-rogi", and "Sweet Pepper + Sausage". Staff was friendly. Atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, not too loud. Great location as well!

Plant based Zaa and ice cream?! Is this still earth?! Ahhh Shyaaa it is! If you ever needed a reason to cross over to other side, this might be it. The vail is very thin nowadays. Thank you for your service to this planet VP. Xox

Even though I'm not vegan (not full time at least), I was surprised by the taste and quality of the dishes. We had pizzas and carbonara, both highly recommended.

Loved the garlic knots and the dough was really good - not fussy about the sausage crumble on my pizza but I’ll defy give it another go. Service was quick and friendly.

Loved this pizza! The kids and adults were happy and full. The ingredients and sauces were on point and the app keeps you informed of progress. We recommend getting one pizza per person, but get different types to mix and match flavors.

I have a gluten allergy. I did not get glutened at Virtuous Pie. I have to give major props to Virtuous Pie. As someone with both a gluten and dairy allergy, I was prepared to never eat "real" 'za again. Then I heard about VP and I was so excited to try it. When I arrived at the resto however, my dreams turned pie-in-the-sky when I saw cooks spreading sauce and toppings over the regular crusts and then dipping back into the containers. "OK - this is not gluten-free." I thought, "This is cross-contamination city." I was about to turn around and walk out when my friend suggested we ask the cooks about their preparation process for the g-free pies. The cook we spoke with was exceptionally knowledgeable about gluten-free food prep practices. VP really does everything they can (short of making the pizza in a dedicated kitchen) to avoid contamination. They pull NEW, uncontaminated sauce and toppings from the fridge, clean all prep surfaces, and have a dedicated side of the oven to bake the g-free ‘za. From ordering, to prep, to baking, to cutting, the staff clearly communicate with one another that this pie is for someone with a gluten allergy. When the pizza arrived, I was still trepidatious as even a little gluten can wreck my week but I forged ahead and dug in. The food was delicious and I did not get glutened! Since then, I've ordered take-out through DoorDash. On my order, I indicated that I have celiac's and requested that new sauces and toppings were used. After I placed my order, I also called VP directly to ensure they understood my request. Once again, the pizza was great and I did not get glutened. It’s always a gamble dining out with food allergies but VP really does their best to ensure that cross-contamination does not occur. Thanks Virtuous Pie for bringing vegan, gluten-free pizza to Vancouver!

As a vegan I loved this place, food was fantastic!! Probably the best vegan pizza I've had but coeliacs be warned they make no effort to prevent contamination of the gluten free food. They should really call it less gluten as nothing is actually gluten free.
Warren Eichhorst
The pizza was decent but the experience was terrible. Firstly, those with gluten allergies must proceed with caution as the kitchen cannot guarantee that pizza is gluten free. Secondly, the staff need to understand their kitchen capacity and properly balance eat-in & take-out orders to prevent excessive wait times.

Incredible pizzas, if you are reluctant to try the curry mile.... I was also and when I did try it......it blew me away, it was beyond tasty, it was such a perfect blend of everything. It's hard to choose a favourite pizza here but the curry mile definitely makes me consider making it my favourite. All of them are so good, also the dipping sauces are such a treat, these pizzas make me feel pizza fulfilled. They also have ice cream for desert... what?! My friend has a gluten, nut and soy allergy of which they catered to and made a custom pizza for her to enjoy and that she did! Thanks virtuous pie for being so awesome!

I will go there again and again. Super fantastic pizza, great price, very friendly staff. I will highly recommend.

I came to Virtuous Pie on a recent trip to Vancouver with my boyfriend and 3 of our friends on the recommendation of Lauren Toyota. We tried 4 different pizzas, the Stranger wings, Kim Jack, Los Tacos, and the Superfunghi, we also tried 4 of their ice cream flavors, turmeric and black pepper, coffee and doughnuts, mint and dark chocolate, and matcha coconut. Nothing disappointed in any way. I am not a huge fan of mushroom so I would say the superfunghi was my least favorite but if you are a fan of mushroom and very earthy pizza that will be your jam. they have something for everyone and I sometimes find myself wanting to drive to Vancouver just to get some pizza. Luckily I am in the Portland area so I won't have to wait too long before we get our own! :) Even if you aren't vegan I highly recommend trying out Virtuous Pie.

We popped in here on a rainy Sunday and are so glad we did. We tried the Los Tacos and the Ultraviolet - both superb!! Who could resist house made plant based ice cream - especially a turmeric black pepper (AWESOME!) and a Hawaiian Vanilla. We told ourselves after our first ten mile run we were going to have pizza for dinner and this was better than home made. We really appreciated that the (plant based) cheeses are house made rather than packaged/processed. The pizzas were a good size and beautifully presented. Thanks for a great dinner. We'll be back! Great location, nice seating, friendly atmosphere, hip but not hipster. We really enjoyed the good food. Thanks. :-)

The only pizza I love from this place was the Los tacos and ya’ll took them it off the menu. Every other pizza I’ve tried is disappointing. Bring back the Los tacos and I will come again.

Food and service is fantaaaaastic and the best thing is I'm not a vegan but I'm totally blown away by the delicious food. The pizzas are all one size which means waiting time is cut right down to a few minutes, I recommend to have a salad starter you wont be disappointed.

A welcomed alternative to regular pizza 🍕. The pie was made with fresh ingredients, all vegan plant based and each one is 10 inches. The staff helped me decide what I might like and were interested in making sure that I was satisfied. It's a small place; the inflow of customers was steady. Overall a great experience! Wish we had one in the DC area. They also have free WiFi!

Great tasting and beautiful pizza with nice array of different ingredients and flavours, disappointed though that when I ordered an ice cream sandwich to go, the ice cream was literally all melted a minute after I left the place. Called and let the place know, maybe they can figure our a solution

I was genuinely so happy with the experience at Virtuous Pie. I'm vegan and my best friend is gluten free and it's the happy medium between both of us! Got a pizza and the Icecream sandwich was BEYOND AMAZING. Please open a location in Ottawa, Ontario!

Amazing pizza! Delicious...and it's Vegan?! Vegan pizza joint? Again, who woulda thunk.... grazie Virtuous Pie! Next time, gonna try your vegan ice cream!

This is a hidden gem in the city. Everything is made in front of you and everyone there takes pride in what they serve. This place is very inviting and I highly recommend dropping in.

Great food. Fantastic food. I'm not even close to vegan and I loved it. Plus the ice cream is insanely awesome and the atmosphere is pure quality.
Dan Miner
I am not a vegan but can't get enough of this place. Stranger wings are amazing.

Didn't even taste like vegan pizza. Was amazing. Still need to try the ice cream. Atmosphere is great. Will be back forsure!

A surprise last minute visit from L and J meant lunch somewhere new. We debated on a few spots but eventually settled on Virtuous Pie. They specialize in plant-based pizza (all 10″ individual sized) and ice cream. Sign outside. #Pizzabod is the new dadbod eh?. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 1:30pm). The inside is modern with three communal style tables, three stools to people watch and a couple seats outside on their mini-patio.
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
We have been wanting to try Virtuous Pie for some time but I had not realized that it was full on vegan! We arrived Saturday just before noon at their location in Chinatown to a full house, picked up our passport and placed an order. Service is counter order then counter pickup when your food is ready! Seating is somewhat communal with long tables and benches and a few seats at the front window and comfortable enough. We started with their Roast Harissa Cauliflower that came with a Paprika Aioli. I am not sure what the vegan version of an aioli is but it was very good.We also ordered the Ultraviolet Pizza. It came with walnut and arugula pesto , cashew mozzarella, oven dried tomatoes, kale, caramelized onions and pine nuts. This was genuinely a pie that I could eat on a regular basis. The crust was very good with the nice little charred areas. They are baking these things in one of the 900 degree, 90 second ovens (Don't quote me on that. I didn't check the numbers. I just watched.) that is the basis of great pizza. The cashew cheese was nice and provided that melty element while the rest of the toppings provided a slightly minimalist but lovely experience. Just don't show up expecting a mountain of cheese and pepperoni and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Finally, we had to try their plant based ice cream! One scoop turns out to be actually two scoops and we tried two of their flavours, Marion-berry Cheesecake and Key Lime. The first pleasant surprise was that the key lime did not arrive in the traditional neon green! Again, I am not sure of the vegan ice cream process but these were both excellent tasting with an ever so slightly more crystalline structure (not quite as creamy as the dairy stuff). We loved it! Honorable mention goes to the Sparkle Mouth Ginger Ale that we shared. It has genuine ginger in it unlike the stuff we grew up drinking, and strong ginger flavour! A lunch without guilt! Minimum damage to the planet and our health were caused in the making of this blog post! And my wallet did not fare badly either. Thanks Virtuous Pie!

Sorry for the long absence in posting…one thing after another kept coming up and well…that’s history now lol. Anyways, onto this adventure! During one of the many heat waves of the past summer, a friend and I had heard rave things about the Virtuous Pie at UBC and wanted to try it, without actually heading to UBC, so to the Chinatown location we went!

Video review on youtube with HD footage: vancity food crew virtuous pie
.
Let's start this by saying I'm not vegan. My friend wants to try this place because its supposedly healthier than normal pizza. I just feel its popular because its trendy. I had the meatball pizza, one friend got mushroom, the one who wanted to try it the most got a breakfast pizza with a faux like hollandaise sauce. Its mustard. It completely overpowers the pizza and isn't the greatest choice of flavour. Its the same as squirting mustard all over a normal pizza. None of us could help her finish hers. The mushroom pizza was fine, mine was salty but fine, but the food itself is not worth the high price tag. I don't recommend this place because its expensive and doesn't taste good. And I'm someone who is willing to be a bit more adventurous and try new things. I'm not trying to slam the business, its not personal, I'm just saying what I felt.

Totally loved this place! Being gluten free and dairy free this was great. Totally felt like "real" cheese. Would recommend to anyone. Vegan or not.
NeverSayWhen
Ice "cream" was so grainy it was hard to eat. Server/counter person was incredibly rude and argumentative. I didn't have the pizza so I'd be willing to go back (even though the first time was a terrible experience). I will update this review if I can convince myself to give them another shot.

140 characters summary: Pizza that is different but tastes amazing. I would come back and how busy it was after 8 pm is a solid indication that this place is dope. My Instagram feed is always filled with pictures of people having pizza at Virtuous Pie. Vegans and non-vegans alike seem to really enjoy the food here.

AMAZING!!! Im am always curious to try new vegan joints and this place was such a great choice! The vibe and decor was great but the pizzas stole the show!

I would definitely recommend the Kim jack and stranger wings. Who knew cashew cheese would be this delicious! I'm just blown away by his place. Definitely recommend this place to any pizza lover, meat lovers included.

Everything here is plant based...even the cheese! We came here during their Friday night happy hour and they sure were busy. We ordered the super funghi and the kimkama pizza...20 minutes later they finally called us to grab the pizza. Lots of people came for take out as well. Too bad I already had earnest icecream in the afternoon otherwise I would order their icecream flight because they have some very interesting flavours. Oh well there's always next time.

Can't wait to try every pizza on this menu! Have tried the super fungi and the Buffalo cauliflower pizzas and both were amazing! Crust is thin and crispy and delicious. Ingredients are fresh and tasty, and the size is perfect for one person (even though I could easily eat 2 to myself hehe) such a great vegan place with delicious options. Will return over and over!

Thomas you can try to have my review removed as many times as you want. I came to the restaurant, ordered your mediocre food and had to watch you physically abuse a customer/driver. You can try to silence me all you want the people need to know just how un-virtuous this business really is. Thomas (Owner) is a spiteful angry dude who wont think twice before getting physically aggressive with you. Seriously avoid.

Virtuous Pie has reminded me of what years of lactose intolerancey has deprived me of. These pizzas are incredibly delicious, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! The only downfall is the long lines, I can see a larger or at least second restaurant in their near future because this place is constantly que'd up to the door. They need to find a more efficient way of taking orders, ateast for their ice cream. It's really a hassle having 20 people wait in line while an undecided customer samples mini spoons of ice cream.

This is a cool place to check out. It has nice decor and feels bright and welcoming. It isn't a large space but good for catching up with someone. The way it works is you order and pay and then they'll call your name when it's ready. You can also order it to go.

I tried the super funghi and the med. The pizzas are a good size for a personal pizza. The crust is nice and crisp but not too much. The med had good flavour, but I found it a little bit salty. But I enjoyed the falafel and mint chutney. The super funghi was okay. Nothing too special about it. I do want to go back and try more of their pizzas. Also their presentation on the slabs is pretty neat. For dessert, I had their matcha coconut ice cream. I probably will just stick to their pizzas. The coconut flavour was too strong so I couldn't taste much matcha. Overall a great option for plant based pizzas. They have great flavours and interesting toppings.

Terrible customer service, it was not busy, the person behind the counter was just standing there talking and talking to the person next to him. He didn't bother to greet me or ask how he could help. He just took payment and went on with his conversation with his collegue. I don't care how good your pizza is, your pizza will be garbage if you don't have customers and I will not ever come back.

Kombucha on tap, great salads and amazing vegan pizzas! the stranger wings and ultraviolet are my faves. the space is cute but tiny, I wouldn't dare try going during a dinner rush
Picky Diner
To a lot of people, pizza is comfort food – a guilty pleasure loading on fatty deli meat and cheese. But the pleasure of eating pizza doesn’t have to always be a guilty one. Virtuous Pie definitely delivers the flavours, the comfort, and the sensory pleasure that the regular pizzas provide us. The Stronger Wings pizza knocked it out of the park for us, with that amazing buffalo wing flavour. And I would undoubtedly come back to try the other fun and whimsical creations here.

Vegan eating has been something that I thought was disgusting, but now I have grown an inkling towards it. Fennel & sausage, $12: I really wanted to try this because of the faux sausage! I am a big meat lover, and other meat alternatives like seitan just do not cut it for me. With that said, the sausage tasted really legit and I was really impressed!

We were looking to start a five stop cocktail crawl, but first I insisted on some solid food for dinner. Knowing our route and having already been to dinner at each stop, I stood my ground on wanting something more meaningful than small plate bar eats. Our choice was limited, given that this was a Monday and many of the restaurants in the neighbourhood choose to keep their doors close on Mondays. So after a lap around the block we found ourselves at “Virtuous Pie”, a highly acclaimed, all vegan pizza parlour. A place, I myself had made a note to visit, as it is rumoured a favourite even amongst non vegans. And after my first taste, I could see why. Pizza good enough to not leave you feeling like you are missing out on cheese.

Stranger Wings – bianca, spicy buffalo cauliflower, crisp fried shallots, blue cheese drizzle, scallion. I will admit I walked in a skeptic not beliving that vegan pizza could be that good, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed my pizza. The crust was thin and chewy, just how I like it. The spicy buffalo cauliflower had a “meaty” texture to it and a hint of spice.

I'm not a vegan so was a little skeptical about the pizza. I was pleasantly surprised. The cashew mozzarella was great, but I especially enjoyed the crust. Tried the Super Funghi and Ultraviolet and definitely preferred the Ultraviolet. Ice cream was fantastic too

As the only vegan in my family I was very excited for the chance to revamp pizza night. That being said, I by far enjoyed it the most. It was not the taste, my carnivore brother and parents all enjoyed Ultra violet, and stranger wings, but they described it as "more like flatbread, definitely not pizza." (This bemuses me as I think of pizza as a form of flatbread.) The pizzas are tasty, but the price is a drawback as is the size. Hope to try the salads and other menu items in the future

Absolutely love Virtuous Pie! We ordered take our for work so tried one of each pizza all on GF crust. They were perfectly cooked with thoughtful flavor combos. My favorite was the Spicy Wings pizza!!
I absolutely love it here. Have been twice and both times were just as great. The pizza is seriously delicious and the service was really friendly. I do not mind the community seating at all. Everyone understands that it is community seating and so I found that people tended to make an effort to move over and create space for anyone clearly looking for a seat. It is very clean and modern inside. I have now tried 4 different pizzas and the ultraviolet with pesto is the clear winner for me, so yummy!!

Great location off of Keefer and Main, but a very small space. It's great inside and super trendy and clean. The lineup is very long, however, but while you're in line there are a few things you can do. For one thing, you're squinting trying to see the tiny menu on the other side of the restaurant. You can also watch the chefs who are preparing the pizzas right behind a small glass wall that runs along the restaurant which is actually pretty cool. You're also keeping an eagle eye on the 5 small communal tables waiting for a spot to open so you can dive in there faster than Michael Phelps. They have a water station which is super nice for while you're waiting, but unfortunately, you might be waiting to get disappointed. I got the Stranger Wings which was phenomenal EVEN THOUGH it had cauliflower on it. And any place that can make me enjoy cauliflower isn't too bad in my books. The crust and toppings were delicious, however my gluten free sister naturally got the gluten free crust, and it was a disaster. On the outside it was done but on the inside it was chewy and completely underdone. She couldn't finish it it was so gross. A pizza lover knows that the crust makes the pizza, and if it fails, it doesn't matter how good the toppings are, but your entire pizza experience will be ruined. This place is pretty cool, but unfortunately marred by a case of bad crust.
JaFARi
Meh...pizza was like a thin piece of dry burnt toast.. We ordered 2 different pizzas and a side, both were terrible! Bland cheese, toppings had no flavour, and the crust was dry & burnt (kind of like cardboard). My dog wouldn't even eat the crust, she just picked off the toppings and left the rest on the sidewalk. Thought she made a good point.
On a side note...the side salad was delicious

Farina pizza down the road is 10 times better

Don't recommend them for the pizza - just get a side salad ...and maybe an ice cream - I hear the ice cream is good

Virtuous Pie's smallish brightly lit room with communal seating looks spacious up until around 6pm when the dinner rush starts and goes out the door. So come early or do takeout. At $12 per small pizza (one size only, and apparently no bulk discount) the price is OK for a basically thin-crust neapolitan style pizza. With this type of pizza and the typically sparsely distributed toppings, you are at great risk of having a slice with an OK amount of toppings, or too little; and it's also hard to get an even distribution of the stated ingredients. Don't believe the picture-perfect ad copy on the website and go see for yourself. Virtuous Pie isn't alone in uneven toppings for small, thin-crust pizza, so it's apparently a niche pizza sort of trait and you either accept it or you don't.

INCREDIBLE! Virtuous Pie's plant based pizza is a wonderful, delicious thing. The design of the room is also a wonderful, delicious thing. Vancouver is lucky to have this inspired restaurant.

Exceeded my expectations. The strange wings pizza was crazy good! Looking forward to try all of the pizzas on the menu. Great space, great food. Highly recommend it!
