I was feeling Caribbean for a late lunch so we decided to check out Cool Runnings Restaurant & Bar.
We dropped in on a late Monday afternoon (around 1:30pm). The inside is small but there's plenty of tables. Everyone that dropped in grabbed takeout except for us.
Service is super laid back and friendly. Our waitress refilled our water several times and even changed the TV channel to watch the French Open when I asked. Note: food comes out island time so beware if you're on a tight schedule.
The menu is two pages: appetizers, sandwiches/wraps, vegetarian, stir fry, salads, soup, roti, meat platters, seafood, sides and desserts.
- Plantain ($2.50) - you get four pieces. Good sweetness but there was a mix of soft and a bit too dried out pieces.
- Curry lamb shank ($19.00) - I've never seen lamb on a Caribbean menu before! You get three solid shanks. Great texture. Rice and beans were satisfactory and the coleslaw was light and refreshing.
- Curry goat ($14.00 large) - the goat was tender and curry had great depth and flavour. I don't know why you would get it boneless ($2.00 extra); bone gives all the flavour!
Chill vibes and good food. I'd come back to try their oxtail or even their seafood options.
Excellent beef roti. Very flavourful. Would definitely come back to try different dishes. Ambience is ok, parking available on street. Economical priced.
Cool Runnings is a classic-style Jamaican restaurant located just south of Gerrard on the west side of Main Street. It is quite appropriately named after the Jamaican bobsled team of the same title, who’s challenging journey to the Olympics in the face of prejudice and eventual earning of respect was made into a movie. On that note… Hey International Olympic committee, remember when your biggest controversy was Jamaica competing in a winter sport? I’m sure they’ll answer after clearing their diving pool of algae and their landline phone of pleading voice mails left by Ryan Lochte.
We thoroughly enjoyed our first time at this hidden gem. I had the chicken soup which was so delicious. It was full of chicken and tasted like home cooked West Indian soup. Then the oxtail and rice&peas. - gravy was very flavourful. My husband had the lunch special jerk chicken and coco bread. Also so delicious! Great service, reasonable prices. We can't wait to go back when the weather gets better to hang on the patio.
One of the better places to get awesome jerk chicken. Tender, succulent and enough spice to my liking. I personally like their coleslaw, which is creamy and sweet. Their large size platters are good for two but not if you're really hungry. It is a little more pricey than your average Caribbean joints but well worth. Oxtail was apparently also good according to my friend. When I was here previously, I had their fried chicken and that was quite crispy and delicious with the gravy on the side. Overall, good food, decent prices for the portions and nice staff. I will come back again to try their roti.
Terrific little neighborhood restaurant with a nice outside patio, and was highly recommended by friends who live nearby. Most of us had the curry goat which was excellent - maybe the meat could have been a bit more tender? The oxtail also looked great. Jeff L. had the chicken roti which was absolutely huge and bursting with sauce. Have to try that next time - the rotis I've had were usually too dry for my liking.
Irie. I've travelled a lot in Jamaica and worked in a Jamaican Restaurant back in the day. I love - actually I need often - Jamaican food and was thrilled when I discovered Cool Runnings in the Upper Beach. It's a comfy little spot with great window seats with a great view of the street. I love the food - I think it's serves some of the best of Toronto. If you're feeling for a little Island vibe it's a good place to go.
Just OK. I can't say I was blown away by the food. It was ok but it great. The service however was quite good.
