I enjoyed an assorted banh mi for $3.75. I had it made spicy and with the bun toasted. The sandwich was made quick and eaten even quicker! A great little snack. I'd have two if it was meant to be a whole meal.

Go and order yourself a barbeque pork banh mi. It’s delicious and filling and it costs $2.90! From the Vietnamese you get the barbeque pork, lightly pickled shredded carrot and daikon and fresh cilantro. From the French, garlicky mayonnaise and a fresh crusty baguette.

Now I’ve had Banh Mi (more info) once before but it was at 99 Fast Food and instead of the typical French Baguette roll they used a Constanzo’s roll (a Buffalo staple but not what I wanted). This location in Chinatown seemed incredibly authentic and smell

Ba Le 2 (their other location is in Gerrard Chinatown) is my go-to place for Banh Mi sandwiches. Ba Le uses baguettes that are closer to the original French style -- longer, more torpedo-like, with a crispier crust and an fluffier center. The other Banh Mi stores on Spadina uses Hong Kong-style baguettes, called Piggy Buns (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piggy_bun) - no crunch or crispiness to the crust, and tends to feel chewier.

My friend from Paris noted that these are as good as the ones made from the Vietnamese community in Paris, which she ate growing up. Also notable is the orange "pig's ear" coldcut, which isn't usually available at other Banh Mi stores.

I'll typically just order the assorted banh mi, and ask them to toast it. They take care to only add the cucumbers, pickles and cilantro AFTER toasting -- the small details matter. They spread finely chopped peppers if you ask for "spicy", rather than leave large chunks of peppers inside -- much appreciated if you prefer an even distribution rather than sudden surprises.
