I have eaten in a lot of Afghan grill and shawarma places all over Toronto but Al-Meezan has the best tasting Afghan restaurant. I would highly recommend it the my friends that consider themselves foodies and are loyal to the taste. I would say their food is an experience one must have in Toronto. Too bad they don't have many more locations especially in Mississauga.
Although I am a bit overdue in writing this review for Al-Meezan’s Spicy Grill (better late, than never they say...lol); my most recent visit prompted me to ‘promise’ the owner that I would write a review about them, especially after writing a less than favourable review for one of their ‘competitors’, so here it goes....
I was introduced to this delightful (and delicious) eatery by my boss about 1½ years ago when we dined there for lunch one day (remember that I said I was a bit ‘overdue’ for my review)...
Ever since that day, I have been back to this restaurant on average of at least once a month, if not more. In fact, I have been known to order food to take home on 2-3 consecutive Friday evening’s ... It’s that GOOD (and very affordable)!!
Al-Meezan’s specializes in Afghani food, and if you are not familiar with Afghani (Middle-Eastern-ish) food, allow me to verse you as best as I can....at least in ‘my’ opinion, as I have tried a variety of their menu items in order to best offer an informed judgment. (BTW, I am as “Caucasian-Canadian” as they come, but definitely enjoy divulging in the vast assortment of ‘multi-cultural’ dining options our great city offers, with the exception of that terrible ‘other’ Afghani place in Brampton, which I will NEVER go to again).
OK... do you like grilled chicken (really...who doesn’t)?? Do you like grilled meats in general?? Lamb, beef kabobs, tandoori chicken... spicy...or not spicy... Or perhaps you prefer a vegetarian option... Falafel... Hummus...MMMmmmm... Are you hungry yet???
If any of those items appeal to you, then you must visit Al-Meezan’s and taste what I’m talking about. All skewered meat options are grilled as you order them... so you are getting authentic, “hot off the grill” meats... not something that has been sitting under a heat lamp getting dried out and tough... so definitely worth the 10-15 minutes wait time (or you can call ahead and pick up, like I do, or dine inside as well).
The meat skewers can be a-la-carte, in a wrap, or as a dinner which includes a side salad, Naan bread and some very tasty Afghan rice (it’s incredibly flavourful rice... I’m still trying to figure out the spices used, so I can make it at home...lol... it’s absolutely delicious... unlike any rice I’ve had before... and it’s their ‘plain’ rice, apparently).
The meats are absolutely delicious! My personal favourites are the Spicy Chicken Tikka – spicy chunks of grilled boneless dark meat chicken (this also comes as a non-spicy option made with breast meat), the Tandoori Chicken kabobs – grilled ‘drumstick’ portions (also spicy), and the Beef Shami kabobs (not spicy, but full of flavour). Although I have not personally tried the lamb kabobs, my boss has, and she says “it’s wonderful…very tasty”.
Truthfully, I have had nothing but consistently great food from this establishment, and am yet to be disappointed by the quality or the taste. Their portions are large, and their prices are extremely affordable, and you definitely sense that you are a welcome guest in their ‘home’.
Whether you want to grab a quick wrap for lunch, or a full dinner platter for your evening meal, I highly recommend Al-Meezan’s for delicious, authentic Afghani food.
As a footnote, I will add that I am truly grateful that I enjoyed Al-Meezan’s food at least half a dozen times before I tried their ‘competitor’, as I made the mistake of assuming that all Afghan food was created ‘equal’… Let me assure you that it is NOT… This ‘competitor’ can’t hold a candle to the taste and quality of Al-Meezan’s, and had I gone to this ‘other’ place first, it would have soured me from ever trying Afghani food again… thankfully it was the other way around, as I now know how good Afghan food truly can be…. But I’ll let you judge for yourself…
Amazing food i loved the taste and quality of food it the best afgan restaurant
