Ever on the hunt for delicious sushi, as I scroll through my Instagram feed I’m always on the lookout for mouth-watering photos of raw fish. Almost a year ago I noticed Aoyama, specifically a stunning chirashi bowl full of my favourite types of sushi. Hubs and I stopped by for an impromptu Monday date night as part of my birthday celebrations this month.

This little restaurant filled up quickly shortly after 6pm so it is good to make reservations ahead of time. My friend and I ordered the sashimi omakase, tako su, shrimp tempura and spicy salmon roll and beef tataki.

The sashimi was fresh. I liked the scallop and shrimp the most. The tako su came with big pieces of octopus and wakame seaweed in vinegar which was refreshing. The tempura in the roll was still warm and filled up abigger portion of the roll so the spicy salmon did not stand out for me. The beef tataki was Avery good portion and I enjoyed it with the Light dipping sauce.

Overall, I enjoyed this little authentic restaurant.

Aoyama Sushi is a very short drive from home. (No need to drive 18-20 km to go downtown) It is our go to sushi/sashimi restaurant. Endo Masa never, not ever, fails to deliver delicious sashimi. The quality of the seafood he serves in his tiny restaurant is just about the best in Toronto. If you are looking for All-You-Can-Eat sushi or sashimi, Aoyama is not for you. It's not about quantity here, it is all about quality. Don't try to go on Friday or Saturday night without a reservation. We drank Silky Nigori Sake 375 ml. 15% alc./vol. $21.00. We ate House Special sashimi platter - a large variety of fresh seafood (serves 2 to 3); 80. Tempura Udon - Udon with shrimp tempura $12.00 ; 28. Spider Roll - Deep fried soft shell crab wrapped together with avocado, cucumber and tobiko $18 (5894); an a la carte order of Uni (sea Urchin) and Toro (Blue Fin fatty tuna). It would have been cheaper to just order another House Special sashimi platter.

This is the place I take everyone to and it has never failed to impress. The fish is always fresh and of fine quality, some of the best in town and definitely superior to every other Japanese restaurant in the area. A authentic experience and does not hurt the wallet if you know what to order ($9 for a 10-piece dynamite topped with salmon maki roll ftw!). *Just make sure to reserve a table in advance, as I have witnessed many that were shown to the door because of limited seating*. Highly recommend.

Arguably the best authentic Japanese sushi restaurant in Scarborough (Zen used to be a contender until it moved to Markham). The sushi rolls (I had the dragon roll) have fresh ingredients but I found that the rice was too warm which made the seaweed a bit soggy. If you like sashimi or nigiri, this place does it perfectly and the fish is very fresh. The Tako Su (seaweed with octopus) is also with a try. I find that the fried dishes are also good but sometimes hit or miss. It's a tiny restaurant, maybe 20-25 seats which gives it an intimate ambiance. Another plus, the waiters speak adorably imperfect English and the chef yells goodbye to you in Japanese when you leave.

Quality, quality, quality. Chef Endo Masa only thinks about one thing. The quality of the seafood he serves in his tiny restaurant. $21.00. We ate House special sashimi platter - a large variety of fresh seafood (serves 2 to 3); 27. Dragon Roll - shrimp tempura, eel, avocado, topped with tobikko and sweet unagi sauce; 62. Gindara - sweet, tender, grilled filet of black cod with original sauce; and 75. Assorted tempura - shrimp, vegetable and fish $16.00. We passed on dessert. We didn't feel the need for anything sweet.

Everything in Aoyama is fresh, and the portion-to-price ratio is decent.
While it costs a little more than your average sushi joint, the quality is worth the small extra expense, and the omakase option is more cost-effective than at some of the places further along on this list.
The restaurant also has set dishes and an à la carte menu— try the deep-fried oysters and uni rolls. If you're craving dessert, try the black bean ice cream.
For a small, rather unassuming restaurant, the flavours and freshness pack a punch, and Aoyama is a local favourite.

Aoyama is a tiny restaurant. Reservations ensure that there will be a table waiting for you upon arrival. Otherwise there will be a long wait. Fresh quality fish is expensive and you must expect to pay between $120 and $150 depending on how much you eat and how much sake you drink. But it is most certainly worth the price on all levels. Friday and Saturday nights mean the restaurant is full from opening until closing. We have tried many Japanese sushi restaurants in Toronto but we keep returning to Aoyama Sushi. The simple answer is that the fish quality and price are unbeatable. We take umbrage at the service on occasion but tend to ignore the communication problems because of the fish. We are always pleased by the House Special Sashimi Plate made up of an assortment of quality raw seafood and variety for only $55.00. The uni is a special delight. Instead of ordered off the menu, this night we chose to have the Special Omakase dinner by Chef Masa Endo. It was a veritable feast including fresh sashimi, lobster, tempura and sushi. As do a number of Japanese restaurants in Toronto, Chef Masa Endo orders fish from Japan using the internet. The fish is shipped by air and arrives in Toronto on Thursday just in time for the weekend rush.
