Best Thai restaurant on the Danforth for vegans and vegetarians! The recently updated menu specifies which dishes are vegan or vegetarian friendly, and which can be made vegetarian/vegan. We have been to Sala a few times since it opened last year and have never been disappointed. The food is fresh, flavourful, and creative - and the portions are generous. The squash fritters are a MUST try, as is the coconut ice cream - sticky rice and house made coconut ice cream topped with toasted sesame, mango, and other goodness. On top of all this, the staff are lovely - friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The cozy atmosphere is wonderful to enjoy a delicious meal.
One of the best thai places ive been to for real authentic Thai cuisine. The place can get quite busy at dinner time. The owner is wonderful, sweet and engaging with each table. She made our experience that much more special. You can really tell the love and attention she puts into running a successful restaurant, as it shows in the flavors and presentation of the food. Curry pad thai is a must!! I've been telling everyone i know about this place and can't wait to go back to try the other dishes
When my husband did an ex-pat stint in China, one of his favourite restaurants was owned by a Thai couple who made the “best pad Thai”, in his opinion. He fondly remembered the thin omelette that encapsulated the noodles, a dish he never found in Toronto until seeing a picture of Sala Modern Thai – really the sole catalyst for our visit.
The chicken version ($13) arrives covered in a thin crepe that’s more flour than egg; upon breaking through you’re greeted with a pad Thai made from chewy vermicelli noodles (as opposed to the typical thin rice noodles) and a sweet and sour sauce that’s one of the best I’ve heard had – it’s not overwhelming sweet or sour and there’s no tell-tale hint of red indicating ketchup was used in lieu of tamarind.
True to their name, the fresh rolls ($6) are made-to-order as the rice paper is soft, chewy, and lightly warmed. With a simple vegetable and tofu stuffing, you get the contrasting textures of crunchy and soft ingredients, with the Thai basil adding a refreshing essence. On the side, a sweet chili
The Bangkok pad Thai and the pad Thai were amazing! Washed it down with their Thai ice tea. Highly recommend this little restaurant. Great for dining in or takeout
