While the period detail adds to the classic malt shop feel, it's the friendly staff and delicious treats that have made this a neighborhood staple so quickly. Great for kids, great for just sitting and enjoying a coffee. Savoury: pocket/turnovers, sausage rolls; sweets: cookies, ice-cream, special cones. Right next to Bickford Park, pictures of the Harbord Bridge on the wall when it still went over Garrison Creek.
We were visiting from Nova Scotia and I had just seen a feature on Food Network about Bean and Baker Malt Shop. I told my hubby and son that we just had to make a special trip to visit! It was wonderful! I love vintage and retro and this was all that and more! The corner location with counter and stools, super friendly owner and staff, historic photos and memorabilia and the delicious treats and drinks; it was step back in time that was lovingly being shared with friends who are treated as family! Everything was delicious and so well presented. The carrot cake was the best I have ever had and carrot cake is my go to dessert! And the butter tart just oozed richness. I'm looking forward already to stopping in again next year on our annual trip to Toronto. Thank you for making our visit special!!
Bean & Baker Malt Shop is a lovely spotless throwback two-tone ice cream parlour at the corner of Harbord & Grace serving great ice creams, cakes, pies, sweet pockets as well as savoury treats as pictured staffed by friendly hard working folks. A Bickford Park neighborhood favourite!
Such a wonderful throwback, Bean and Baker is a blast from the past and the owners are the friendliest people you're going to meet. From the old school made in house soda to the meat patties, everything from this hidden gem is amazing.
Ordered a Vanilla Icecream Milk Shake and Single Scoop in a Waffle Cone
Ice Cream: delish. They let you sample the flavors before choosing one which was so important. It's also Kawartha Dairy so it's very tasty. Garnished with a piece of merengue with a chocolate dipped base. I had Salted Caramel, which had little hollow chocolate chunks (great for crunching and melting in your mouth) and ribbons of caramel.
Portion: really good for a Single Scoop. My waffle cone was jam packed to the bottom! I was so full after. It was a good portion I felt. Waffle cone was extra, so it all adds up.
Flavor Selection: 3 Coconut Based Lactose Free flavors. 7 or 8 ice cream flavors.
The Vanilla Milk Shake was a light and smooth milk shake blende faith French vanilla and whipped cream.
Service: friendly. Clean and well maintained. Fast.
Decor: like going back in time to a Malt Shop. Music they played was from that time, had me bopping and jiving while I waited for my ice cream.
We will be back!
Located on a corner this cute spot has that diner vibe of the 60's with retro tunes. Truly unique with menu items like a Strawberry Hibiscus Soda Float for $6.50 the perfect treat for a scorching hot day. I also got a Skor Chip Cookie for $1.75 before I left the staff are extremely pleasant and everything is made in house you can't help but fall in love
Friendly staff, cool retro decor and a delicious variety to choose from. Tried the malt shake and thought it was wonderful. Thought it was rather expensive for 7$ + tax. But with that said it is unique and they used kawartha dairy ice cream (yum!!) Would like to go back and give the custom sodas a try.
Amazing milkshakes! The malt option is an absolute must. Thick milkshakes with crushed maltesers on top. Plus the staff is super helpful and are happy to recommend flavours and let you try from the daily selection of Kawartha icecreams. Love it!
Super friendly staff! Very welcoming and knowledgable! Awesome diner feel to the place and amaaaaaaaaazing malt milkshakes! Perfectly thick and creamy and full of chocolatey treats at the bottom!
