As a person who eats meat, a completely plant-based menu generally doesn’t excite me. While I like vegetables, and know there are many ways to prepare them, I can’t help but anticipate a boring dish or worry the chefs will rely on fat and deep frying to make it taste good. At Awai, every dish is vegan and can be made gluten-free by request. After sampling eight, they were all flavourful without depending on fats. In fact, Awai’s whole cooking philosophy aims to use an ingredient’s natural flavours without manipulating it heavily.
A flatbread seems to always makes its way into the meal, thanks to their prominent wood burning oven. Ours was topped with babaganoush incorporating a healthy dose of cumin, sour tamarind (?) reduction, dressed greens, and nuts. While the flatbread was tasty, the gluten-free version, which arrives on a potato rosti, was even better with the slightly crunchy bits.
Our table couldn’t get enough of the porcini soup ... it smells heavenly! Thick and creamy (from cauliflower purée in lieu of cream), there was also a slight kick to the broth from mountain peppers. I could have easily had three more bowls of the concoction.
Of course, there was a salad. Thankfully, it was pretty tasty with the wild mustard greens and other leafy vegetables tossed in a white kimchi dressing, sprinkled with togarashi, and mixed with the fennel
This is going to be a very interesting review for this ravenous meat eater. I had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant two weeks ago quite by choice because my partner is vegetarian. I have never been to a vegetarian restaurant in my life and to be perfectly honest although I do enjoy some meatless dishes I wasn't expecting the extravaganza that was my meal at Awai. Every day the menu changes.
I won't bother explaining the dishes that we had but the concept is amazing; tasting menu, all you can eat from appetiser to dessert, and most amazingly, no menu and no prices. What an amazing concept! The only menu in the establishment is their wine list. They have a small selection of wines but the selection that they do have is clearly meant to be paired with vegetarian dishes. Great choices!
I love this place. The only problem I have is trying to get a reservation. I'm astounded at the popularity of this restaurant.
You have to go. I can't say enough about it!
Really nice ambiance. Servers were very nice. However, the mains took quite a bit longer to arrive than the appetizers. Everything we ordered was delicious! I really loved the flatbread and the ravioli. This is a vegan restaurant I think everyone will enjoy. I didn't know they did not require tips, so that was an adjustment and I think the menus should have stated that somewhere.
