i love oysters and this hidden gem has some of the best in the city!   Located in the business district downtown, this tiny location serves up a small selection of local seafood that’s heartfully selected. The room kinda reminds me of that show… Cheers – on a smaller scale.  It’s very much like, everyone knows your name.  The patrons are mostly local business folk, on lunch or entertaining possible clients.

My coworkers decided to have a night out on a Friday night.  This little pub along Bay/Temperance fit the bill nicely.  Unlike other bigger and nosier bars, this one had a nice cozy atmosphere to allow everyone to jump in to the conversation.  Their specialty are oysters and other seafood entrees.  I ordered their Fish and Chips ($21) made from fresh Haddock.  It came with a delicious coleslaw and thin crispy fries.  It was worth every penny, I was stuffed.  Some others ordered their Fish Tacos which was not as good as the Fish and Chips I had heard.  They have a full service bar so you can really kick back to start the weekend.

A little seafood hideaway,  a fun place to catch up with friends over some oysters.  Quality of oysters pretty good - selection not as good as Rodneys (no one's is to my knowledge) - and other courses - fish and chips, chowders other items - usually quite acceptable.     Service time can vary based on day/time of day but always recommended to get an oyster order in fast - they do take some time to shuck.    This location pre-dated the midtown location (which is sadly now closed).  Dependable  food, mid-range price point.

After a disappointing experience at the gabardine, we walked in here. Hidden from the traffic of bay street. Has a nice feel to the exterior. Lots of windows. Interior is nice also. Very open and bright. As we had already eaten some, went for a couple things, lobster three ways, ceab cakes, lobster poutine. All were very good. Poutine could have been crispier and the sauce was a bit too room temperature. Would return.

Prior to this visit, I'd only tried oysters once and hated them. After being talked into trying an oyster by their handsome bearded waiter, I added some horseradish, lemon and a small spoon of the amazing pear (and apple?) garnish and slurped one down. Best thing I ever tasted! They have several garnishes and the other menu items are also tasty. Service can be slow so don't come in a rush.

My friend and I went to John and Sons Oyster House (56 Temperance Street) for a long awaited catch-up lunch this past Friday. This seafood restaurant has two locations and we visited the apparently lesser-known one in the Financial District. We had arrived with the intention of doing Winterlicious here but soon found out only the uptown location was partaking in the event. :( The reservation I had made online, we were told, was thus thrown out. The hostess apologized. My friend and I were kind of peeved at not at least getting some kind of notification of our reservation getting canceled, but decided to sit at the bar anyway and see what the menu had to offer.

The restaurant is fairly casual and clearly a favourite spot for a lot of business people in the area. We were the first people there at noon and the place got very busy very fast.

We shared three dishes: BAKED OYSTERS
Indian spiced butter, bhaji crisps

I enjoyed these! It’s been a long time since I’ve had oysters and I had never had them with baked with Indian spices before. I really liked the flavour.FISH & CHIPS
Creemore-battered Nova Scotia wild caught haddock, frites, slaw

This was good – not particularly remarkable, but not bad.

LOBSTER POUTINE
Claws and tails, lobster béchamel, yukon gold frites, bromont white cheddar cheese curd

My first ever lobster poutine! DELICIOUS, and incredibly rich and filling. This dish isn’t offered in their Winterlicious menu at all and my friend was intent on ordering it before we had even sat down. There were generous amounts of lobster cream and cheese – we had a difficult time finishing it between just the two of us.

We ended up spending a little bit more than we originally thought we would for a Winterlicious lunch here ($20), but I’m glad we tried the lobster poutine which had been the standout for me. The servers were very friendly and understandably a little rushed as the place filled up with more and more people.
