I have eaten at a lot of pho restaurants. I love pho. It's an incredible dish, so warming and soothing, nicely spiced but affordable. I cannot say that this is the best pho restaurant I've been to, but it is VERY much near the top of my list, which is surprising because Summerland is a small place, and yet this knocks many Victoria and Vancouver pho restaurants out of the park. I like to rate a pho restaurant based on a good standard bowl of pho - I tend to prefer some combination of rare beef steak, flank, fatty flank, meatballs, and/or brisket. In this case, I had rare beer with meatballs and my wife had brisket. The two most crucial ingredients of a good bowl of pho are the noodles, which should be soft and high-quality; and the broth, which should be spiced with a complicated flavour and aroma that cannot be faked. Both of those are excellent and receive top marks. The meat is another important bit - tender and flavourful, which it very much is. Finally, the greens and toppings. I find this place to be a little non-standard, they do not provide the complete standard accompanying dish I am used to in other places. I also am a huge fan of flank or fatty flank and am always sad to not see those options. That being said, this is an excellent pho restaurant run by very lovely people. I have returned and will continue to frequent this place when I am in the area. Summerland is lucky to have it. I am even bumping my rating up a smidge because for a small town, this is really incredible. A big city might earn it a 4, which is still good, but this is as good a restaurant as I could ever hope to expect in a small town and gets it a 4.5.
A small but homey place with good service. They have old school booths and a few tables for two with fancy chairs. When we sat down, I actually noticed another seating area in a sunroom. Looks like it'd be nice to sit there in summer or with a large group!
I was excited to find out that this place had tripe and tendon. We tried their number 3 large (pho dac biet) which had beef balls, medium rare beef, brisket, tripe and tendon. The food came out pretty fast. The pho itself already had the beansprouts in it. I'm used to getting it on the side with basil and lime, but I actually prefer it in the soup already cause I like them to be cooked. The broth was pretty good, noodles were tender, and the beef was yummy. Overall, it's some solid pho and a good portion for the price. Also overheard some customers talking to the waitress about the broth and heard that there's no msg in it. This is always a plus in my books. The broth doesn't even need it because it has good flavour. I'd definitely come back.
So overall i really enjoyed the food here. I thought the salad rolls were large, delicious and the peanut sauce was really yummy.
Their chilli oil aka sate on the table was really good as well.
Their chicken Vietnamese banh mi was surprisingly tasty!!
I really liked their banh mi.
Not much meat in it but it was good for the price.
The downside to this is that their pho was not so good.
The bean sprouts cilantro and lemon or lime was put in for us not on the side. Meat portions were normal as compared to other places.
The broth was weak though :( light and not rich or aromatic.
But don't get me wrong, if i lived in sunmerland i would come here pho sure.
I still biasly think pho soc trang in kelowna is the best though in the interior.
Would i come here again? Yes absolutely.
Thank you for the free tea.
