Friendly and quick service.
Great quality with everything I ordered. I’ve ordered similar dishes at other restaurants and this is by far my favourite. I felt like they focused on making good quality Japanese food rather than turning out mass amounts of cheap food.
We ordered chicken karaage for an appetizer. Its basically strips of chicken that are lightly coated in flour and deep fried then drizzled with a spicy mayo. I didn't care for it. It was pretty bland with a jerky-type texture to it. I ordered the yaki beef udon, which is a stir-fried noodle dish. The beef was chewy and wasn't seasoned. The sauce was really good but that was pretty much the only thing I liked about my food. The restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere (besides the yelling when people are greeted and when they leave...I guess that's a normal occurrence in Japan) and the staff were friendly. The food wasn't bad but it also wasn't great. That being said, I would be willing to try this restaurant again just to see if the other dishes have better seasoned meat.
JapaBowl is definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Saskatoon (and that is saying a lot considering how many places there are to eat now!) I also just recently took a trip to Japan, and even when I returned, I still thought that this place was amazing and authentic. I will always recommend this restaurant to anyone I know. Also, yes it is very small, but I think that adds to its charm.
I go by this place on my way to work and convinced my boyfriend to go today. I have to say the staff is awesome! Super friendly and very polite and the food was amazing! By far the best ramen I've ever had. I had the bbq pork and my boyfriend had the spicy bbq pork and sake. I highly recommend going and I can't wait to go back!
This was a great place! Food had wonderful flavour! Get the bibimbab so good! Spicy chicken ramen was great, I am not a fan of skin on chicken but to each his own! Still great and very nice people
Cafe Japa Bowl sounds like a stupid Broadway fusion restaurant, thankfully its just good Japanese food. At first I didn't think I liked the ramen because it tasted nothing like the salty MSG instant stuff we are used to eating. This broth was deep and milky sweet from the ground soybeans. As I ate the pork belly and flavored boiled egg the broth grew on me as it fell into balance. Come eat the ramen if you want to understand how it should taste; meaty, sweet, salty, and balanced.
I've been looking for a place to get ramen in Saskatoon for while ever since I ate really good ramen in Vancouver a few months ago. I had the spicy ramen with chicken. The broth, noodles and egg were good. The chicken was kind of weird - it had no flavour and had skin on it still. I didn't really eat the chicken, but everything else was good. I'll probably go back, but I'll get my ramen with pork or vegetarian next time.
I've been to this place quite a few times now and everytime I've enjoyed every dish I have had. I especially love their ramen dishes, as Japanese food is not always about sushi, and there are way more fascinating foods to try in Japanese cuisine. I definitely recommend the Karaage Chicken, their blended fresh fruit smoothies, and the spicy barbeque pork ramen. It isn't too spicy and the miso broth plus japanese barbeque sauce is to die for!
Very small, if you come with a group larger than 4 people you will probably want to make a reservation. There are only about 6 or 7 tables seating 2 to 4 each. Interior is very plain and dark, but the location on Broadway is nice. You can sit right beside the window and watch everyone stroll by. In my head I'm reminded of images of small diners in larger cities, where the world outside the diner is bustling and busy, but the inside of the diner is markedly serene.
The menu is mostly Japanese with some Korean influences. There's nothing too wild on the menu, it's very much palatable to a general audience. I suggest one of the rice bowls if you're not feeling overly adventurous. The meat is covered in a very sweet but not tiring sauce, which pairs pretty well with the chili oil. A side salad is included, consisting of greens, radishes, and a vinaigrette. Girlfriend loved the Tonkatsu and is looking forward to returning, have heard good things from friends regarding both the Ramen and the Bibimbap. Of note is that despite being a Japanese restaurant, they do not serve maki.
The business is run by a Japanese dude and his wife, so even though the menu isn't showy or overly exotic, I think the food is very much genuine and handcrafted. I've never seen anyone else running the till or preparing the food. Decor and atmosphere could use a boost, but otherwise this is a very nice place to casually grab a bowl of ramen/rice with a friend.
