One of my husband's favorite: their famous Hainanese Chicken and their curry beef brisket. Diner is a small restaurant that can fit several tables, we didn't have to wait to be seated. Authentic malaysian taste!
Food is pretty good for the price, especially the laksa and hainanese chicken with flavoured rice. It is not too oily but delicious at the same time. Laksa was also very hearty but again, not overly heavy with little bits of chicken breast on top. The char kuey teow was a huge disappointment though with a lack of flavour, tiny bits of meat and overall blandness.
Two friends and I went for dinner at this Singaporean restaurant. The owner and a waitress can speak Cantonese, Mandarin and English. They were the only two who served the customers when I was there. They were very busy running around and taking care of the customers' needs.
The food was above average. The hainanese chicken was the best among all the dishes. The chicken was very soft and tasty with some green onions and oil as a sauce. The flavour rice tasted excellent as well. We ordered Mee Goreng (pan fried noodles with some tofu and pork). It was alright. Not the best. We also ordered a dish of wok fried green beans with Belachen. It was okay. Asians would like the flavour of Belachen but probably not Caucasians. Caucasians might not be able to stand for the "smelly" flavour of Belachen.
We ordered pearl barley tea for drinks instead of coffee, tea or pops. It was healthier.
The restaurant was busy, so if you didn't want to wait, you should call and make reservation ahead of time.
The prices and service were fine. This restaurant is a small authentic Singaporean restaurant, so don't expect the service is going to be like a 4 or 5 star western restaurant. But if you like Asian or Singaporean/Malaysian food, this restaurant is a good choice for you!
In conclusion, food was passable, but I still like my Prata-Man more. Service was satisfactory for the environment, they bring you the food, you eat without them bothering you, you pay. Don’t expect anymore more. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here, but I wouldn’t reject the idea if it was the only choice given.
Food: 4/5 Service: 3/5 Atmosphere: 3/5 Price: Avg.$12/person
Return: MUST come back AGAIN & AGAIN… Must try item(s): Combo for 2 people or Hainan (Steamed) Chicken
Hainan Chicken is one my favourite must eat items while I was traveling in Singapore. So every time when I was craving for Hainan Chicken on rice, I would like to go to Coco Hut to have lunch with my wife. Their food quality might not be the best in town, but the taste and the texture are just so good and very closed to what I had in Singapore. Their Combo for 2 people is very good deal, it comes with 2 Appetizers, 2 Entrée, and 2 Drinks to choose from the Combo Menu. Guess how much is it? It is only 20.95 plus tax.
Follow me for exploring the good food with me :D
Coco Hut Restaurant is a small restaurant specialized in Malaysian/Singaporean food located in Union Square, Richmond. A very good friend of mine strongly recommend us to go Coco Hut for Hainanese chicken. She said it's way better than Mui Garden and Café D’Lite Express so we went there for Sunday lunch. We ordered the lunch combo for Two; included one appetizer , two entrees and two drinks.
Tender juicy chicken at a reasonable price. I've been here a handful of times whenever I'm craving for Hainanese chicken. The boneless, juicy chicken that almost melts in your mouth is whatls always luring me back. It's a small place with only one staff who takes orders and brings dishes AND clean tables so service could get slow during busy lunch times. I like their lunch combos ($20 I believe), you get an appetizer dish, two main dishes (generous servings of rice or fried noodles) plus two drinks. Can't really beat their price as that's pretty much what they charge nowadays at the food court.
Best Hainanese chicken! Chicken skin is smooth and silky and meat has a fragrant ginger/scallion flavour. This is my go to place for Hainanese chicken.
Favorite place for hainanese chicken. My go-to place when I'm craving for Hainanese chicken. Service kind of slow as there is usually only one server at frontline. Tender and juicy chicken and quality is stable. Never felt disappointed coming out of this place.
Laksa was very yummy. Roti canai was not flaky and was thick and gummy. Hainanese chicken was good as well. Char kwei teow was bland as was the curry brisket.
Lovely family restaurant.. Had a great experience here. This family run business provided excellent, extremely friendly service. Their Singapore vermicelli was the best my mum or I ever had. Stuffed with the usual (shrimp, bbq pork, green onion, peppers, egg, onion) and it had the perfect amount of curry. We really enjoyed our meal here and will definitely return.
Cheap & yummy. Whole hainanese chicken with 5 bowls of rice and soup for a bargain price of $19 is a must have.
EXCELLENT HAINANESE CHICKEN!!!. I loved it! Very decent price v.s quality. Compared to the other places I have been in Richmond, this resturant is one of the neater ones. Less than 9 bucks, you get can a meal for yourself. Chicken with appetizers and drinks. I got the Chicken Satays as my appy and they were excellent too. I think they just opened for business, but when I went it was packed. Takeout might be an even better option.
Coco Hut is truly a hidden gem for Hainanese Chicken in Richmond. A whole chicken with 5 bowls of rice is only $20! 4/5 stars Their Hainanese chicken is above average. The chicken is really tender and silky, and isn't dry at all. The chicken actually sits in a soy sauce based sauce. Personally, I find the sauce to be way too salty which distracts from the clean taste of the chicken. However those who find hainanese chicken too bland may like this. 4/5 stars For $7.50, this is a great deal! A single portion of Hainanese chicken comes with a bowl of oil rice, Hainanese chicken soup and green onion/chilli sauce. The chicken oil rice was a disappointment though. Taste wise, it only had a very faint hint of chicken oil. Well made chicken oil rice should also smell fragrant from the oil, but this rice didn't have the distant chicken oil smell. 3.5/5 stars The beef curry is pre
I LOVE HAINANESE CHICKEN AND THEIR OILY RICE. even as a kid i loved it from mui garden but my mom found this small place in richmond where it is so good. they have some kind of sauce that they put on the chicken that gives it such a good flavour but the BEST PART is when you get it as take out and the rice gets soaked in that sauce! i actually had the take out today but was too hungry to take a picture. this is also a great deal at around 8 dollars ($6.85 for take out!) the chicken! the rice! deliciousness (:
I love the chicken rice and the ginger and green onions sauce for the Hainanese chicken. The rest is about average.
Lunch time dining sometimes can be tricky. You may or may not have a full hour to eat but you want a reasonable priced meal with all the right ingredients. Anything more than $10 is considered expensive and you don't want to end up going to the food court for the third time in week! So what do you do? You can always give Coco Hut 椰林餐廳 a try. The food is hot and the service is prompt. There are plenty of free parking so you can expect to be back staring at your computer before your boss gets back!
We also ordered the Hainanese chicken (~$8) which came with a bowl of rice and soup since the last time I had Hainanese chicken at Cafe d'lite Express was such a disappointment. Here, the chicken tasted just right and was free from tendons and bones.
I found this meal rather satisfying, pretty cheap ($20 including tip and tax for everything), and heartily filling for two. Apart from the subpar service, the food and experience was certainly top notch.
UncleP went for the Malay Fried Rice (南洋炒飯). Honestly, I really don't know how this dish should look or taste like (since I don't have much knowledge in Malaysian food)...so I can't tell you it's authentic or not.
Love the Hainan chicken combo here! They're usually pretty busy, so try to come at an off hour. Roti is not bad. Skewers are usually pretty decent.
We were told by several other couples that this place was worth comparing to my other favourites. Since I don't review a place unless I've gone at least 3 times, I was invited to dinner at our friends house and sure enough we had the Hainanese chicken from Coco Hut as well as a Singapore fried noodle with prawns, morning glory (aka Tung or Ong Choy) and an array of satays. My friend asked me if I had reviewed CH yet and I hadn't so here's my chance. Already long winded, I learned of CH around a month ago and have eaten their food three times now. The Hainanese chicken is easily among the top 3 with mama Lee and Prata man. I wasn't blown away by the fried noodle but that is a matter of personal preference as it wasn't bad. The satays have an authentic Malaysian bbq aroma although the quantity could be larger. Overall great and I will definitely be back again. Thanks for dinner Lionel & Crystal
I am always on the lookout for good Singapore/Malaysian restaurants and this is a good one. It's not huge but it is comfortable and seems to have a loyal clientele. I like that it is open right through lunch past dinner so I have a place to go to in the mid afternoon. The Curry Beef Brisket is outstanding although they also sell a lot of a well prepared Hainanese Chcken and Rice. Vancouver's tastes are finally adjusting to recognize the subtle difference to what they are used to is not a minus.
Great prices. Chicken comes with soup and oil rice. 1/2 chicken is a good deal whole chicken is best deal can feed a family. True chicken flavor not msg laden. Service is not that good but I come here for chicken during lunch and dinner. Can get busy and sometimes there's a wait.
Best value for great tasting food.
For $20 or so, you can feed four people by ordering their whole chicken, comes with four servings of rice.
And you go back for the great tasting food, not because of its value.
