Review Hml Seafood Restaurant - Richmond

Kyle Phong
I was there right as dinner service began and things got busy. We had the lobster special, and everything was good. The food was served very promptly. Overall our experience, including the service was good, but it did seem like the restaurant was getting chaotic as the tables filled up. I'm not certain how this place handles being busy, but while it's quiet it's pretty good. They could probably stand to clean the bathroom more often though, much like most other Chinese restaurants I've been to.

WORST SERVICE in RICHMOND especially the GENERAL MANAGER My families will go for Dim Sum from time to time due to their special set. Last week, we had a birthday event for over 80 people and we went to book about a month ago. When the time we book the table, the Manager named Tommy reacted very nice and promised few of our requests such as block a small area for us to have better privacy, free soft drinks, allowed us to have 2 sets of their special lobster for each table... etc. Then 2 days before the dinner I went to double confirm the details with him, he then told me that he could not offer anymore the special lobster sets and need us to order from the regular menu and with min over $300 per table. Of course, I complained and had a very bad experience with his altitude. Finally we had to change to the regular banquet menu with over $300 as we have already sent out invitation to all our friends and families. However, the nightmare not over. When we arrived the venue, he hadn't enclosed a small area for us, 2 tables are even located at the cordial. When we tried to request on fixing them, Tommy simply said nothing he could do especially enclosing the area as it is not convenience for their staff to walk around.... The whole dinner they seem rushing and not relax at all, worst part was they suddenly dimmed out the whole restaurant lighting right after the distributed the cake for the guests. You could tell they were signaling us to leave. Finally he had charged us the soft drinks and he denied that he had promised to be free when we questioned about it. It was so embarrass to our guests especially they dimmed out the light and it was just about 9pm...I would never go to that restaurant anymore.

This restaurant is the worst dim sum place in Richmond I have been to. The hostess was incredibly rude and yelled at our group when we asked politely for a 4 person table. She screamed at us for interrupting her because she was busy. Of course you are busy in the restaurant, but this is your job...screaming when you're stressed at customers doesn't generally help situations. Would not recommend to anyone. There are plenty of better places in Richmond.

We were so disappointed after paying so much money and received very little and poor presented dish. We order a six pounds king crab and they probably cheated three pounds. We will never return to this dishonest restaurant again.

The price, taste and varieties for Dim Sum are good. In winter, don't take the tables close to the cashier/entrance area as their heating system poor around that area. So it is very chilly. The female captain may not intentionally to be mean to customers but lack of customer service training so sometime she is annoying. I still recommend it for causal meeting as the price is right.

We have 20 people with two tables. The waiters don't care the customer feeling and madness 1. We asked for the glasses for the wine, all waiters no response from the start to the end of dinner. 2. The waiters always said you can eat slowly, but they disturb the customers with moving around the dishes and collecting the foods while we are still eating. 3. When we pay the bills, the waiters just leave the bills at the cashier with no person there and we wait for at least 10 mins at our table, finally he said the bills are waiting for you at the cashier (but no person at cashier) 4. When we using the turntable, the waiters said don't use it, because of the dishes may damage and they will costs us $10 each. 5. After both bad experiences, we decide to not paying the tips and the waiters said no tips then don't come next time.

Great dimsum every time, especially their durian pastry. I saw some guests order 10 durian pastry dishes and finished them all, and that's when I tried it. It was the best I have ever had. They always have a discount going on so their dimsum is always cheaper than listed price. Parking can be difficult but this place is worth it. Lots of seating.
Isaac Lim
Horrible customer service. We put our names down to Ming so we could wait to be seated. We stood there waiting for awhile while new people coming on the list got seated first. Later we found out she "didn't see us" and proceeded to seat other people; even when we were right in front of her. Also when we had our meals the beef balls were still raw...

| Saturday Morning Dim Sum |
Tasty Level: 7/10
Price: $44 (overall bill for 3 people)
Will I come again: yup
Check out my instagram @eatwithasia to see more reviews!! ☺
------------------------------------------------
The wait for the food was kind of long but I think out of all the dimsum, I enjoyed the bbq bun the most. The bun was still extremely soft when it came to the table and wasn''t as salty as other dimsum places. Overall, I would say if you are searching for an averaged price/quality dimsum place then this restuarant is perfect for you.

Horrible experience. Bad customer service. Went into the restaurant with only two people ahead on the waiting list. The waitress did not follow the list in order. Instead she allowed the tables of 4 to go in front of us or the customers that they know. We waited for an hour and 10 mins. I went to the waitress and ask when our table will be ready. Instead she ignored me and called other people in. Such a bad experience.

If you want cheap dim sum with soso quality, HML is the place to go. 20% off all day with free tea charge. Service is not the best. Our beef balls never came so we wanted to ask for the bill and cancel it but the grumpy waiter said it wasn't possible. We had to wait another 30 minutes just for the dish to come. Air condition is not always turned on so be prepared to be warm while eating especially during summer months.

Dinner is mediocre. They have dinner deals you can purchase that comes with lobster or alaskan king crab (when in season). Portions are OK but some dishes are bland.

Would you like an order of "Deep Fried Intestines in Brown Sauce" for $8.80?
Lol bad choice of English words.

HML Seafood Restaurant is in a weird location. Their entrance is in a parkade and you walk through this hallway which looks like a storage room. From the exterior corner window display, they have decals stating 20% off Dim Sum. I never understood why they have all day 20% off Dim Sum, it must be a market gimmick saying look this is what others charge, but we give 20% off our prices. If it is always 20% off, then that 20% off is your regular price, is it not? There is also no tea charge.

Anyways the food isn't bad but isn't cheap either. They always have crab, lobster and king crab specials. Usually around $125-175 for a set dinner.

The good thing about HML is that there is no time limit for the 20% discount and there is no tea charge. Our group took up two large tables of 12 people per table. The above were just part of what we had. We had a lot of food and it only came up to $10 per person including tips. . Here is the details of what we had. Steamed Siew Mai were huge.

HML seafood Restaurant. I think this is a good place to eat Dimsun, because you can get 20% everyday. Food is good, service is good. Parking is busy during weekend and holidays.

One of the things that Dick's family likes to do is to go to HML Seafood Restaurant for dim sum and family dinners either when they feel like it or for holidays or celebrations. I've been invited there so many times than I can remember. We've been there so much that the owner/manager Tommy Zhao knows us by the first name basis, especially with Auntie M. HML Entrance (photo courtesy of Chowtimes) HML is a big and well kept restaurant. It was very busy when we arrived around 11am. Thank goodness we made a re

Terrible Service. This place has been one of my favourite dim sum places for a long time but I absolutely cannot go back here again. This time the waitress forgot one of our dishes completely and then actually demanded a tip from us when we left. For a bill that was a little more than $47, we left a $50 bill. She had the nerve to chase after us and demand an extra $2. Tipping is used as a measure of the quality of service, and quite frankly, she didn't deserve it. I will never go to this restaurant again.

Terrible service, Worst Manager, MSG Dim SUm. This place deserves less than 1 star. In Richmond, you are going to find a lot more places that have better Dim Sum at much lower prices. As per all the reviews posted below, I will have to agree the SERVICE is TERRIBAD. Mom, Dad and I put an order in at 11:40am. 25 minutes later, we have not received any food and we asked the waitress to look into it. It was hard to even get a waitress to look our way.

She couldn't find our order, as in, someone lost our order. We had to re-do it, 25 minutes after waiting, no apology, nothing. Our first dish came at 12:23pm (another 15 minutes) of waiting. The food was fresh, but it was soaked in MSG. We wanted 45minutes+ for our first dish.

In the end, our bill came to 28 dollars and we decide to leave a smaller tip because of their mistake, and lack of service. The head waitress met me at the door and asked for MORE TIP. Is this even legal? Asking for more tip? I got angry and asked for the manager (the guy who works in the front with glasses). I told him what happened, and the tip we left was reasonable for their mistake. He was even more rude. He brushed me off, was non-apologetic and said didn't say much of anything. As per all the reviews, the worst manager, ever.

You can skip this place, as there are many of other goodies in Richmond.

Table#91
Check#121116
Server: BEN BEN
18/12/2014

Rude staff. The food is pretty good, but the service is horrible. The people are rude. The waitresses started to take away our stuff when we paid for our bill. There were still food on the table!

Very rude service from all the staff working at HML including the manager. The washrooms are filthy, the services are very bad. The waitress at the reception is very rude. One time while I was sitting on a chair and waiting for my table, she came and told me to stand up and grabbed my chair away because she need a chair. She did not apologize. She pushed me away while I was waiting at the hall. Another time, the other waitress did not change the table cloth and it was dirty and disgusting. I told the manager when I paid my bill, the manager kept on saying it was not true. The very last time I was even scolded by the waitress for not tipping them enough even though they did not deserve a big tip. There was no service and when I asked the waitress for something, I had to talk very fast because they did not stop and listen to what you want and it was very stressful. HML had the worst service among all the Chinese Restaurants in Vancouver, even in the world I believe.

Award for "Worst Manager in a Chinese Restaurant in Canada 2014". Third year running....well done Sir!

-----29 Sep, 2014-----

Incorrect change problem with rude untrained manager!. Dim sum today Sept.29/2014........when ready to pay waitress busy did not pick up bill/folder so my wife took bill with two twenties that I had just given her to manager /cashier..

we know it was two twenties because bill was $21.80 and if we had had a $5 bill we would have just left $25 on table!.........manager /cashier takes the two twenties and placed them directly into cash drawer and give change from only $25.he insisted my wife {who is Chinese only give him $25!}....a lengthy heated argument still not produce correct change .......I at this time had stated to walk to parkade until I was joined by my wife ...I returned to the restuarant and asked for the manager told "he was not in!" SO DIM SUM FOR TWO COST $36.80! and waitress lost our intended tip of $3.22! RUDE CLOWN OF A MANAGER.....we shall inform all our friend to avoid this place for sure! .......our telephone number is C. HORRIBLE SERVICE W. ROTTEN FOOD. I really don't understand how can the manager still work there. I haven't been here for a long time but today I came here with my parents and a family friend for dinner. We ordered 4 dishes and a bowl of congee/porridge. 5 min after, the manager came back and told us they ran out of congee (seriously?! This was at 7pm....and there wasn't a lot of occupied tables too), anyhow, we ordered a bowl of rice instead. The dishes came pretty quickly, but they were all very tasteless and bland. One of the dishes we ordered is pork belly and squid with celery. The squid was mushy and tasted very gross like rotten food. We told the manager about it and requested to return the dish. He gave us a face and brought the plate back without saying a word. Later, he came back with the plate and told us he just ate one and it tasted nothing bad to him. He even opened his mouth to show us he ate it (that was SUPER GROSS..). Then my dad's friend, who is a chef, said "no that's not how it should taste at all!" The manager argued with us for few min before finally taking the plate away. The rice never came.... we were gonna order another plate but too pissed after what the manager said. So overall 2/10 for this restaurant.

So so. Food wasn't bad but it also wasn't great. Probably not the place to go if you are coming from out of town and expecting great Richmond Chinese food.

Food here is okay but all staff here are soooooo rude... Even for a Chinese restaurant. You wanna be treated like crap go here.

Cat Noodle 4 free to welcome all customers! So funny to see a front desk waitress yelling at all ppl wait for seats. "MOVE! STAND OVER THERE! OFF-OFF!" plus waving her arms rudely . Before I manage to put down my name on their waiting list, I told my family n friends that I was not going to joint the poor crowd and leave. No idea with their food n no going to find out.Bye

Never again!. I went to the restaurant alone for morning tea today, and got really bad service. One of the waiters (guess she may be the manager or at least the in charge), was very rude. The tea cup was dusty and I used some hot water to rinse it, because my table was for 2 ppl, there were two sets of bowls and cups. i waited for 5-8 mins but no one helped me clear the bowl of hot water I used. So I just poured it to the 2nd bowl on my table. Then, the rude female waiter (heard her name was May, not sure though), came over and blamed me for pouring water into the 2nd bowl, saying this is not "environmental friendly" because they would hv to wash and arrange another set again!! i was so shocked to be scolded by a WAITER!
Waited 25 mins for 2 dim sums, which is considered slow compared to normal chinese restaurants, then I asked for the bill for fear that it would take too long again. I was so upset and wanted to give no tip at all! but finally I paid slightly less than 10% (10 cent difference only, cos i dun hv enough coins and i dun think they deserve).. again, i was scolded by the same female Waiter for not tipping more! She said: we already offer 20% discount on dim sum, and free tea for customers... you should pay more tip!!) I asked why should I pay tip for being blamed for a little bowl of water ?!!?!??!

Don't go there. Their promotion is just a hook. They promise 8 lbs king crab, but actually it is less than 4 lbs. We also order a geoduck and was told it is 3.5 lbs. But it came out for less than 20 slices, probably less than 2 lbs. All other dishes tasted terrible. They are just big cheater!

Serving day old dim sum. I tried a couple times going there early to avoid the crowd.
You can tell they servve you left over dim-sum from the day before.
One time, the shrimp dumplinhd 2 different colour of shrimps in the steamer. One of them is fresh pink, the other two are darker colour and a bit smelly. And one time the hand shredded chiclen came out frozen. When we asked to change the dishes, the server was kinda rude and tried to argue with you

Just been there tonite. We ordered the lobster dinner. It was terrible, and the meat was stale and very poor quality. It took only five minutes to have it on the table after we placed our order. It was warm not hot.
We told the manager? and was told that we were bad luck others had better ones. The service was poor. It spoiled our evening.

Deceiving Rating!. Whoa! 45% approval rating! I've eaten at some truly awful restaurants that had better ratings than this! I'm glad I didn't see this before walking in!

I don't know why everyone's so down on this restaurant. It's a little stale in decor, but no worse than most typical Chinese restaurants. The servers speak a little curtly, but I expect that from Chinese restaurants as well!

They offer a $10 special menu, in addition to the regular menu. Ten dollars is a good price for dishes around here and you get quite a bit for your buck.

The gai lan came well made and crunchy. In fact, most of the vegetables taste crispy, which is nice since a lot of Chinese restaurants overcook veggies. The accompanying beef tastes smooth and tender. The Szechuan spicy beef didn't taste very spicy but that's also expected. Most of the Chinese I know do not handle spicy very well so you won't see many habanero peppers in the food.

The food here tastes completely competent and the prices are good. I don't see why so many people hated the place.

Dim sum here wasn't bad for the price. 3ppl ordered 7 dishes for 26$

Came for dimsum. They sat us near the entrance. The draft coming from the entrance was cold. Table is a makeshift mahjong table. Requested a diff table but wasn't given one. Food was ok,just don't expect great experience.

This review by Asian Chinese guy;
I come to this restaurant pretty often but usually with family and they usually deal with ordering food and such service. Today it was just me and my gf and I did the food order. There were no service, the tea pot was open (empty) for a good 30 minutes until we ask for the bill to get water. Food was bad today too, cold and small portion especially the shredded chicken cold platter. Do not order this.

Impressive!. I've never really been impressed with crab - a lot of work for such small reward, not very flavourful....and then I had king crab at HML and now I'm a believer....yummy! Loved the legs - already cracked open for easy access - cooked simply and covered in diced garlic - so good! The fried knuckles were coated in a umami spice mix, which we loved so much we ordered a plate of prawns cooked the same way (a bit overcooked but still delicious). The crab head came stuffed with a curry rice and we all enjoyed it. It came with three sides that we chose from a list of options: the green beans with XO were good, the hot & sour soup pleased the table, and the squab was good (a bit overcooked). Overall, very enjoyable.

This is the worst restaurant I decided to go to. The king crab was 10 pounds and not 18(paid for 18 pounds btw)This shows what kind of business they are running. I would not recommend this place at all.
John
Terrible place. Spent an hour long wait without any food coming. Finally realized they didn't put in the order. Got up and left. Chinese male server 5'6 with glasses tubby man. Worst server ever! I asked what he recommended he yelled at me and told me whatever I want to eat. #smh I've never been so disrespected in a restaurant in my life. No lie!
Stormwolf R
Not good at all. Their Alaskan King Crab meal claims to be not only 8lbs of crab but also a single 8lb crab at the time of this review, not only was it obviously not 8 pounds, but also coming from multiple crabs. The manager was rude and awfully confrontational. Gesturing rudely and denying what the waiter claimed moments ago about the 8 pounds and full crab.

Went for Dim Sum. Terrible! Low quality, small menu and bad service. Never again. Try Neptune, or Empire Restaurant down the street. Much better but service still not great.

A really traditional Chinese Restaurant. If you want to understand more about Chinese living style, go to this restaurant... The most stressful restaurant in BC... :P
Hot Dim Sum, cooked in traditional way, very few to choose... Anyway, I will go back again because of the price and the food!!!

Crappy food, and lousy service. My husband and I came visiting Richmond from Victoria hoping to enjoy some good Chinese dim sum before we caught our flight at YVR. We arrived in Richmond around 1:30pm on a Sun afternoon and was hoping to get into Kirin for a quick snack at 1/2 hour before they had their last orders taken at 3pm. Unfortunately there was a flood of people still waiting for a table and was told there would be a 25 min wait. We were starving so we decided to walk around the area and stumbled upon this place. We've been to this restaurant when it was called Kingford and the food was quick, decent and reasonably priced. Since the dim sum had to be ordered off the menu we had decided to order a few to try first and then order more if we like it. We ordered 4 items: har-gow, shrimp dumplings with scallops, and bean curd rolls with mushroom and the steamed shrimp & chive roll. It took 25 min before the first item showed up and then another 10 min each between the 2nd and 3rd items. OMG! We were there for 45 min and had only got 3 items. Sure, it was busy but the restaurant wasn't even full. It's dim sum for gawd sakes, it should all be prepped up and ready to be steamed before the doors are even open for business. We waited another 10 min before inquiring about our steamed shrimp rice roll. I got really fed up with watching other people receive the same item we were waiting for so I went to inquire. The server said she will look into to it as I told them ïf it's not made already, we would like to cancel it and get the bill please cuz we've been waiting for over an hour here. The lady took another 10 min and asked someone else to give us the answer that they have run out and they won't be making anymore today. WTH!! We were so unhappy that they didn't even tell us that they were out in the first place. Talk about a lack of organization. The food was mediocre and left a really bad MSG taste in our mouths even after we were sipping tea for over an hour. We left leaving them a $0.10 tip to round up our bill and got the %$#^ out of there quick.

Absoultely Disgusted. A mandarin speaking man greeted us at the door and tried to lure us to sit down because we haven't decided to sit down yet. As soon as we got seated the same mandarin man tried to push us into ordering all the expensive dishes, but we refused and he changed his attitude immediately. Nobody refilled our pot of tea and the food was disgusting, the steamed egg plant in a dish was just raw, and the Shark Fin Soup tasted like chicken soup ...

There was a table next to us that was celebrating a birthday, and all the waiters had their backs towards us preparing the birthday cake, and singing birthday song, while we just sat there waiting for our bills. We got so mad that we just stood up and left, and didn't give them any tips. The same mandarin speaking person threw the money on the floor and that was the end of our wonderful night.

Not impressed. Had the dim sum today, place was packed with people and they have to add few tables at the entrance. After long wait, we finally have a table and its at the far end of the restaurant with mah-jhong table with table cloth.

Food is alright but is consider below average in Richmond. Again, i would recommend Kirin over HML consider of price, service and cleanness of the place.

Very impressive but the negative ways.

Good self service?!. Big restaurant, difficult to find parking, parking space very small, service was minimal, dim sum ok, price average.

Great Dim Sum. We've been going to the HML for years (when it was the Kingford) and always found, and still do find, the dim sum to be first rate. The 'Superior Shrimp Dumpling" is the best. Another goodie is the shrimp spring roll. Its all good. The only frustration is when you walk into the lobbynto get a table, it can be quite confusing.

Although my mother and I had a terrible dim sum experience at HML Seafood Restaurant lat time, we were intrigued by their attractive deals of lobster and king crab dinner specials. When my mom’s friend Ms. Wu and her family sent us an invitation for a lobster dinner at HML, we gladly accepted. The lobster redemption was not too shabby. The 4-lb live lobster was cooked well and tasted great. Of course, with such a high quality ingredient, it only requires such an easy and forgiving way to get the job done: braised with shang tang (superior broth brewed with chicken and seafood). Although the yi mein noodles (re-hydrated oil fried noodles), that we paid $10 extra for, was a little bit of a let down because they did not use egg noodles, but used a plain white noodle instead and it was pretty bland.

The dim sum dishes here were flat, flat, and flat! Ordered 4 dishes and waited 20 minutes… No food. I asked a man looked like a manager. He was like, you guys ordered the most elaborate dishes that would take longer time! Well I ordered those dishes at other busy places and never had to wait this long. This place was busy but was not completely packed. Finally the food came, they all looked good. Although I thought using bamboo leaves instead of lotus leaves for the sticky rice chicken was a little cheap. Once we started eating, the food was just tasteless. It desperately needed seasoning! Do the cooks have ever tasted their own food? Mom said, “Should we ask for a plate of soy sauce” I giggled. This could be such an insulting comment on how flat their food is. The people sitting at the table next to us had the same problem of long waiting too. This time, the waitress that they were asking was even more rude.

My mom saw an ad in the newspaper for a special Alaskan crab set at $148 at HML Seafood restaurant. She had come here for dim sum around 4 years ago, but never returned because the food was underwhelming and she didn’t really like the atmosphere. Since their dinner set sounded like a great deal at first: $148 for 8-9lb crab cooked 2 ways (steamed legs + fried body), and a choice of 3 small dishes, our family decided to give it a try.
Every Day Is A Food Day
My mother told me that their dim sum is definitely no good, and they had only tried their dinner menu for the first time last time. She was surprised that it was actually pretty good, especially at the amazing value and price. They have a few promotions, and when they ate out last time, they had the lobster meal, which included 6lbs of lobster along with 3 dishes for o

You get 20% off all dim sum items as well as free tea (other dim sum places normally charge you $1 per person for tea) everyday. We were seated near the window and this is the view from our table. Not very pretty, but hey it gave me great sunlight to take pictures with. :P

I've wanted to try HML ever since it opened, but I never got around to it. I slept in on Canada Day, so my lunch options were very limited because a lot of places were either closed after lunch hour or closed for the day. Naturally the only option left was dim sum. We arrived at around 2 pm and the place was still packed full, but probably because it was a holiday and not because of the food. Some of the more popular dim sum like the baked BBQ pork buns with puff pastry (飄香明月貴妃飽) ($3.95) and the house special baked egg and milk tarts (金牌葡撻皇) ($3.50) were already sold out. So in addition to the few dim sum we ordered, we also got a dish of stir fried rice noodles with sliced fish and vegetables (菜遠魚片河) on special for $6.80. The presentation wasn't very appealing, and the sauce was very thick and starchy. The noodles combined with the sauce had a slimy and gummy texture which was rather odd. The dim sum was comparatively better. The homemade style pork d

Minoo organised a Christmas celebration at HML Seafood Restaurant during one of last cooking session of the Richmond Community Kitchen. The South Arm Community Kitchen had been to this location, also for Christmas celebration in 2007 but it was Kingford Seafood Restaurant back then.
