The lunch at Yuan's did make a great dim sum alternative for us. If you are tired of eating Cantonese dim sum all the time, the small Shanghai style dishes could be a good choice for a Chinese brunch. The Xiaolongbao (soup dumpling) here is great. However, I was more impressed with small cold plates like the Drunken Chicken, and the Fried Yellow Croaker. The latter one has become my favourite Shanghai dish these days.
Came here for dinner on a Saturday night and was recommended by a coworker. Luckily we didn't have to wait long. Their decor is pretty over the top and interesting to look at. The foods we ordered were hit and miss.
Xiaolongbaos were a definite hit. They're a bit bigger than ones I'm used to having and tasted great.
The drunken chicken was another hit. Special duck was alright, didn't find it really special.
Shanghai double cooked fish filets were interesting (wouldn't order again)...served cold and reminded me of smoked filet.
Double cooked pork in "lotus leaf" (aka bun) was a big miss. I've had this at Dinesty where the pork is so soft that when you bite into it, it melts in your mouth with the bun. The pork at Yuan was so chewy it was impossible to eat it between the bun.
8 flavour sweet rice was a surprisingly big portion and no complaints about it.
Directly across from Aberdeen Center, this dining area can accompany small tables to large parties. We were seated immediately, they were one of the rare restaurants open in the morning in Richmond. Noodles were chewy, dishes were modern chinese and handmade on site. Fantastic and would definitely recommend.
If you like a little fancier dining, this is a great place to go to for Shanghainese cuisine. Comfortable and more upscale setting. Great plating with the use of fancy dishes. Service was great as well. Lots of flavours in their dishes...but a bit smaller portion compared to other places.
They also have another location across from the Walmart on Alderbridge and Garden City.
I have mixed feelings about this place because of their new opening location across from Walmart in Richmond. I always went to the location across from Aberdeen and I receive pretty good service and good food for a good price. However, my first time at the new location was a disaster. Food took SO LONG to come and their tables are a lot smaller than the other location. So long story short, I would definitely recommend going to the location across from Aberdeen as they seem much more experience and you would also have much more comfortable seating. I go with my family all the time and we order 3 things and our bill is like around 30$.
Yuan’s Shanghai Serendipity Cuisine is a fairly new Shanghainese restaurant in Richmond. Located on Browngate road behind Aberdeen, it’s convenient to get to if you take public transit. They also have a parking lot beside the restaurant too or you can park at Aberdeen and sneak over like us.
I was really craving Shanghai dumplings so we headed to Serendipity to try them out. We were really excited since I’ve never had theirs and we had a 10% off VIP card plus a free dumpling card as well. The service was lacking but that might have been just because we were seated behind the door within a room so they couldn’t see us.

Yuan’s Shanghai Serendipity Cuisine is one of the newer additions to Richmond’s Shanghai/ dim sum options. It took over the spot of a Korean restaurant and has renovated. The decor is probably one of the fanciest in Richmond for Chinese food. There are blue velvet chairs, vases, and statues. Somehow we ended up in a private room too which was pretty cool as you got a lot of privacy.
It was my first time to come here for dinner with friends. This restaurant has its own parking lot. The sign says 2 hr parking. A traffic guard was standing at the entrance of the parking lot and making sure the traffic in the parking was good and under control.
Its interior design was outstanding among all other Chinese restaurants in Lower Mainland. There was a humongous TV on a wall that was running Chinese ads.
We ordered xiao long bao, duck soup, pan fried lamb, pan fried green beans, and pan fried pork, tofu and vegetables. We got a couple dishes free, because one of our friends knows the owner of the restaurant. We got a small dish of drunk chicken and pumpkin cake with red bean paste. Everything tasted great in general.
The service was good. The pricing was average. Their menu was very thick and heavy that it was like a fancy colourful book!!
The place was really busy when we went for dinner. We were told the the wait would be two hours. In the process of looking for another place, the staff then told us that a table became available. The dishes were interesting, and we ordered a fish, a vegetarian dish plus several appetizers. They tasted reasonable, though pricy.
