Review Kam Do - Richmond

Love everything here! Their bread, cakes, breakfast, and other baked goods. I used to go to their cafe as a kid, so I was super happy that they now offer breakfast. Their bread and cakes are honestly my favorite out of other Asian bakeries. It's not dry and heavy. The price is reasonable for the quality. I personally feel that their products also last longer than others, as they still taste good the day after. Service is decent. For the most part, they are nice and friendly. The owners are amazing! I wish them al the best and praying they open more locations in the cities nearby. Love that they open super early, as this allows me to buy breakfast on my way to work. I recently ordered a custom cake, and it turned out really good. I was a bit nervous, as I've never had their Taro cake before. FYI, I did not give them instructions nor ideas for the design. LOOK HOW CUTE IT IS. the amount of Taro paste in the center was perfect (I was gonna take a pic of the inside, but everyone ate it up so quick! This was a graduation cake for some of the graduates at the school I worked in, and they all loved it. They were a bit sad knowing it from Richmond (too far for them - they lived in the east side of BC). Highly recommended!

Came here for their breakfast menu on a Sunday. The store was empty at 8am time but the shelves were full of goods. We ordered the pineapple bun sandwich with corned beef and the satay beef instant noodles. We also got the pineapple bun with red bean, wife cake, green bean cake, milk powder bun, sesame mochi, coconut bun and garlic ham bun. I would recommend the coconut bun and the sesame mochi for the baked goods. The milk powder bun also had a lot of filling. The prices are moderately priced. As for the pineapple bun with corned beef and cheese and egg. Boy oh boy did it create a mess in the car but it was very delicious. You couldn't really taste the cheese much but the egg was very creamy and delicious. The corned beef was just salty enough to balance the sweetness of the pineapple bun. The portion was also quite large. I just wish there was a bit of veggies in it maybe pickles or something to balance off the heaviness of everything. As for the instant noodles with satay beef, I wouldn't order it again. The instant noodle soup base was okay. Nothing amazing. The instant noodles were cooked well. I liked that the container separated the instant noodles and the soup. They give you quite a bit of satay beef but it didn't have much satay flavour. Overall would recommend their pineapple bun sandwich and some of their baked goods. I used to be a big fan of their wife cakes but as I've grown older I no longer crave for them. But they are definitely known for them and you should definitely try it if you have not.

Amazing buns and pastries! The lunch sandwiches taste good and it's worth it for the portion.

Delicious HK breakfast, been here three times already! The satay beef on a fresh pineapple bun is a must try. I've tried all the sandwiches and prefer the ham over the others (if you like spam they are very generous with the spam in the sandwiches). The noodle soup is soooo good, the broth is flavorful. There is always a little bit of a wait because they make the food fresh on order, but worthwhile. It gets a bit busy during breakfast/lunch hour.

The pineapple bun with butter is a must try! I would recommend sharing with a friend as it is a lot to eat for one person. They slap in a whole slab of butter! The pineapple bun with beef was nice as well, but the texture definitely isn’t as memorable as the butter. I also ordered the cold milk tea. Paired nicely with the buns.

big sized buns, service was friendly and helpful. If you go before closing, buns are buy 2 get 1 free. They don't have a parking lot so you have to park at the Richmond Centre lot.

New breakfast menu. Up to 3 pm. Drink 1/2 price with meal. Pic of Satay Beef Pineapple Bun.

Great bakery items, their iced lemon tea was to die for. It tasted like a well known boxed lemon tea drink. Other than that, pastries were okay.

This is an Asian/Chinese Bakery located in Richmond, right next to the Richmond-Brighouse Skytrain Station. They have a very large selection of buns, cakes, and other baked goods. Unfortunately, I might have arrived too early in the morning: they didn't have many cakes available. I got their Deep Fried Curry Beef, BBQ Pork, Pineapple Red Bean, Deep Fried Sausage, Shredded Pork, and Taro Buns. The food weren't the greatest that I've had, but still solid. The listed prices were a bit on the higher side for an Asian bakery, but many of the buns were 20% off, so in the end they were quite cheap. All in all, this is a decent Asian bakery that's worth visiting.

Deep Fried Curry Beef Bun ($2.60):
3.5/5
The bun wasn't exactly crispy, but it did have a nice fragrance from being deep fried. It had a good amount of curry inside, which was fragrant, but just a bit too salty (even for me).

BBQ Pork Bun ($2.25):
3.5/5
The bun was quite soft, light and fluffy. There was a fairly good amount of bbq pork inside, which had a nice bit of sweetness to it.

Pineapple Red Bean Bun ($2):
4/5
The pineapple topping provided a nice bit of texture and sweetness. I also really enjoyeed the red bean paste inside, which was creamy and mildly sweet. There was also a fairly good amount of it inside.

Deep Fried Sausage Bun ($2.25):
3.5/5
Again the bun had a nice texture and fragrance from being deep fried. The sausage inside was more of a hot dog, and was a bit too salty for me.

Shredded Pork Bun ($2.25):
3.5/5
I really enjoyed the pork floss on top, which provided a great savouriness. The creamy stuff in the centre lent a great richness and moistness to the bun.

Taro Bun ($2.25):
3/5
The bun itself was pretty light and fluffy. I enjoyed the taro paste, which was creamy and had a slight bit of sweetness to it. I did find there to be too little filling, however.

Summary:
Food: 3.5/5
Price: 4/5
Service: N/A
Overall: 3.5/5
Recommendations: BBQ Pork Bun, Pineapple Red Bean Bun, Shredded Pork Bun

Great bakery and super popular with the locals. They have a great range of buns, pastries and cakes. It's also at a really reasonable price- after a certain time in the day, all the pastries are discounted by 20%. Even though they say they close at 9:30, I went in at 8:30pm and the bakery had already cleared all its pastries away, which was really disappointing,, so I had to come back another time. Will 100% be back for more though :)
Yes. We,re Eating Again.
To be honest, I am not really a baked goods guy or a big fan of sweets. I have made a concerted effort over the years to stay away from processed foods, at least at home. So my comments here are not those of any kind of expert but more from the point of view of an open minded neophyte. i bought 5 buns and a tart and was surprised to pay only $9.25...so far so good. My partner loves anything with Taro and we agreed that this bun was tasty as well as interesting as it sort of resembled a bear claw. I wolfed down the Curried Beef Bun all by myself and consider this one also a success. The Egg Tart also was creamy and fresh, with a flaky shell. Nice! I have learned that Pineapple Buns are so named for their pineapple like appearance rather than flavour. This bun was fresh with a crusty sugary topping but I am afraid that I do not understand the allure and debate that surrounds who makes the best. To me, they need something....hey! why not add pineapple? Finally, the Pork Floss Bun and the Pork Floss and Seaweed Bun. I love both Pork Floss and Seaweed but put them together and add a white bun and my palette just does not get it. There are many more types of baking here and since I tend to gravitate to the slightly more exotic selections, maybe my review is not fair. Everything seemed fresh and the service is efficient if not overly familiar. I can see why it is so popular!

Went to Kam Do years back and had terrible service and stale bread. As years have gone by and I was in the area I decided to give them another go. Big mistake. I approached the counter and was greeted by two employees who continued their conversation for some time before stopping and glaring at me. No hello, no welcome, no how may I help you. I requested two cakes from the display. Still no reply, just rather unprofessionally went about packing the cakes. I paid and left. Cakes were brought home and refrigerated for a few hours. I went to eat the cake that same night only to find that the fruit was days or even weeks old and had grey mold all over. Even the icing and whipped cream was molding and appeared to be very old. This had to have been at least a week old. For having terribly rude and unprofessional staff and for yet again selling me a mold cake, I vow never to return to this terrible place.

A pretty good bakery with lots of fresh buns. I think they're famous for their wintermelon pastries but they have a wide assortment of lotus paste and red bean paste pastries with salted egg yolk or without. I tried their ham and egg bun for breakfast and found it to be really fresh. I was surprised to find mayo in it which isn't the norm but it still tasted good. I bought some wintermelon pastries and lotus paste with thousand year old egg pastries for my hubby and he enjoyed them. I didn't taste those so can't comment. The service was pretty good and they are a well oiled machine and used to crowds. They get through the cashier lines pretty quick. They only accept cash so make sure you have some before heading over there.

The best pineapple buns!! Perfectly sweet, buttery crust on the softest fluffiest bread!!!! Their wife cakes and taro pastries are bomb too.

We love their coconut tarts, smooth egg tarts and Portugese egg tarts. I always buy something when I am in the neighbourhood. It's great that they replenish tge shelves even late in the afternoon.

Had their lotus seed salted yolk pastry. Delicious, cheap, no complaints. Just make sure to have something to catch all the pastry flakes that will fall because you can't eat this without making a big mess.

I decided I had to get a box of wive's cakes for my dad considering all the hype about this place. Dad's favorite pastry in the whole world are Lo-po bang. So what was his verdict? The pastry is very nice and flaky but the winter melon stuffing is not right. Traditionally, it should have small chunks of candied winter melon and not this sugary winter melon paste that theirs is.

We were visiting Van and we knew that alot of asians love their lo por bangs. So before we left Van, we decided to go get some for our relatives and friends back in Calgary. We ended up buying a couple dozens. And we asked a lady there if we can get a few more bags ( it was fully packed into 2 big bags and one small grocery type of thin bag) so we asked if we could get 1 more of the nicer bags to gift it out. Also my sis was flying to a diff city than us, so we thought itd be better if she can take at least one of the nicer thicker bags. So the lady who didnt serve us said it costed money. So my mom said thats fine. The lady then was making faces and decided to take the thin bag and switch with a thicker bag. My dad nicely asked her to leave that bag in just in case we needed it. She made a face and was not happy doing so. This bakery mostly serves tourist or ppl out of van, i think it is a little bit of rip off to charge ppl..we had like over 20 boxes stuffed into 2 bags. I also think the owner may need to reconsider this lady there.
Buns had too much dough and not enough filling. Pastries were soft and buttery. Large portions and decent prices. Very clean compared to similar places.

Famous for wife cakes, you say? I think I'm so used to eating the greasy wife cakes that I don't quite get the hype for this flaky, light tasting wife cake here. I bought my friend a dozen and I ate one myself and decided it was "meh" so I just walked out. I must try the other baked goods here next time though... I think they got skills that I have yet to fully discover.

So I came here for the second time and got some wife cakes for myself and it was still "meh". I did like the egg yolk pastry or the duck eggs pastry though. The purple taro and yellow pineapple pastries tasted bland. All in all I think this bakery is fresh and low fat and low salt and low sugar so it's pretty awesome. I'd consider this to be a higher end bakery but sometimes it may not result in the gritty down-to-earth Chinese bakery taste that you might have grew up with.

Unusual, inexpensive. Because I was raised on European/Anglo style pastries, Asian bakeries seem odd to me. The things they sell are like distorted, funhouse-mirror versions of what I'm accustomed to. But I like to try them anyway, for the novelty factor and because they're usually a bargain. So it is with Kam Do.

Take their “Napoleon.” It was unusually crunchy, almost like pie crust for the millefeuille pastry sheets instead of soft and toothsome the way the French do this item. I've seen the same style at other Chinese pastry shops, so it's obviously a "thing" in the Orient. Kam Do's was tasty, but you'll want to eat this outdoors because of the pastry flake fallout. I got a date-paste/walnut bun for $1.50, which was a good deal for such a rib-sticking dessert. Not bad for something that did not have chocolate in it! Almond cookies are a standard Chinese treat, and the one I got here to take with me when I flew to Newfoundland was still crisp when I finally got around to eating it days later. It helps that Kam Do and other Asian bakeries wrap everything in cellophane. French and Italian patissiers would be appalled at that, though.

Thanks Joycee the cashier for giving me attitude. I've never received such horrible service from a Chinese bakery before.

I have enjoyed their cake in the past and was about to order my wedding bakery gift cards from their store after seeing another individual pick them up.

I purchased a single mochi because I was not going home that day, and usually, my family would purchase at least half a dozen every visit.

Joycee saw that my transaction was so low, she started giving me attitude, such as flicking the receipt onto the counter and throwing my change all over the counter. I foolishly asked for a mino bag, and she also threw it at my direction, giving me a dirty look.

Thanks Joycee foe treating me like this so I know to purchase my wedding bakery giftcards elsewhere. It would be horrific for any of my guests to receive appalling service when redeeming their bakery items.

Easily the best bakery in Richmond. Kam Do never fails me. Every single pastry treat I've bought there thoroughly satisfies my belly. When you enter their doors you're greeted by clean store front (which is not always the case in Chinese bakeries) and a dazzling array of nicely packaged buns/pastries. My favourites are the flaky pineapple cake, ham and egg bun, and pineapple bun. The friendly staff at the till always remembers to remind their customers that they can save on the tax if they get six or more items. Their signature red boxes give a great presentation and I like giving away their pastries as souvenirs. I always look forward to coming here!

Wife cake is no longer good.... This bakery is famous for their "wife cakes" and they claim the recipe is originated from hong kong (yuen long). I purchased their wife cakes 2 years ago because of the hype and found them quite satisfying. I made another purchase again last Saturday and brought home 6 "wife cakes". They are no longer good, because the flaky outside part becomes way too thick, and the sweet chewy inside becames way too thin, so the proportion is so out of balance. Disappointed and will never buy again because it just doesn't worth it.

SPOIL YOUR EVENT - PLEASE STOP BY THIS BAKERY. If you want to spoil your event choose this bakery ......I ordered my daughters 1st birthday cake 5 days in advance...and when I went their to pick up the cake , the answer I got was "sorry we forgot to make the cake" choose a different cake....THAT Was the first case then the staff who was soo careless after this huge blunder wasn't looking they are sorry ..not even responding anything......then they offered me a different cake and a asked me to take the discount of such a big big big amount of two dollars....I refused to take this kind of such a nice gesture & left with a other cake because anyhow I wanted a cake although that was not what I order just to save my baby's birthday...........don't have much words so if want your event to be spoiled go and order the cake from this bakery...

Yummy. I am absolutely addicted to the pineapple buns from here :) The buns can look fairly different from visit to visit, but they always taste good - soft, sweet bun and flaky cookie topping. If you are a wife cake fan, you will not be disappointed with these either - they have a mild sweet flavor, are soft and chewy in the middle and very flaky outside. They've had a grand opening discount going on forever - I'm not exactly sure what the price for anything is, but I always seem to pay less than it says on the shelves for buns? At 8 pm, buns are buy 2 get 1 free, and when I've gone there around that time - there were folks that got there just before 8 and were sitting in the corner with heaps of hoarded buns waiting for 8, and the shelves were pretty empty.

I live in Kitsilano and make a special trip to go and get items from this bakery! I love it it is so good!

No meat in the buns. Virtually no meat in the curried beef or bbq pork buns. I mean none. No New York City Chinatown bakery would dare sell buns with nothing in them.

It is a surprise because the restaurant has such enormous portions at such low prices for meals.

Great wife cakes. I've tried the wife cakes ($1.30 each) from this location and the original Kam Do Bakery and Restaurant - both are great. I am not sure if they bake them all at one kitchen or separate, nonetheless the new stand alone bakery here does a good job. It also sells all the typical Chinese bakery offerings like egg tarts, pineapple buns that are about $1-$2 each. I didn't like the egg tarts here as I found the custard to be a little bland and the tart wasn't very flaky. But do try the wife cakes, made with winter melon.

The mooncakes from Kam Do (albeit pricey) were delicious! The ones from Crystal Mall...not so much haha. If you guys haven't tried mooncakes you definitely should, they're only available once a year!

An Asian bakery ( something you don't see in Saskatoon) in Richmond. Lots of variety and tempting-looking buns. Mango pudding is awesome!
SunnyYQ
This is like the traditional mooncake filling with a pastry exterior. The white lotus paste did not have much lotus taste to it but it was quite sweet and smooth. It was also quite dense and hard, which made it chewable and good.
Two Hungry Piglets
Delicious baked goods - very good for the most part Price is on par with other bakeries - hovers around $1.25 to $1.30 Large-sized buns Free parking at the mall Various discounts on various items during different times of the day Wide variety of pastries, cakes, etc

Kam Do Bakery was my absolute favourite! It won the 2013 Diners’ Choice Awards for “Best Bakery Shop,” and they definitely deserved it. At the awards, they prepared a variety of delectable pastries. I tried to sample as much as I could! These were filled with Green Bean Paste. They’re not very sweet, and had a prominent bean-y flavour.

Overall, I did enjoy this place, and I’m glad I only came here for a quick snack and not a meal. There’s tons of food and it’s a tad greasy. The prices aren’t terrible either! Parking can be a challenge as it shares a parking lot with other stores and supermarkets – it’s located in a strip plaza and drives go anywhere, in any direction.
I love Vancouver... the food, culture, people.. food... :D
And Its not a trip to Vancouver without a quick stop at Kam Do Bakery to pick up a couple of tasty salty/savory and/or sweet pastries to nosh on the plane and take back home

After hitting up Bob’s Submarine Shop in Richmond, I noticed the bright signs of Kam Do Bakery across the street (next to the Shoppers Drug Mart at Richmond Centre). This location is much more convenient than their other location on Alexandra Road since it is so close to the Brighouse Canada Line station.

Just before I finished telling my sister how much I love it when companies come over and bring food with them, Jbear walked in the door with a box of giant egg tarts. He must be a mindreader or some sort. It was my first time trying the big egg tarts from Kam Do Bakery and I was thrilled to find out how tasty they were. Located right beside Richmond Centre on No. 3 road, I found myself overlooking the chinese bakery. Even though I could see it from Brighouse Station every morning, I never knew what tasty treats were in store all along until Jbear showed me the way. It was a busy afternoon at the bakery and I was disappointed to learn that they were sold out of the giant egg tarts. We went for the small ones for $1.20 each. They also have a discount of 12% if you buy 6 or more, but they call it "no HST" instead, which may sound like a better deal. After I got home, I was once again bummed that we didn't buy half a dozen. Normally, egg tarts are best eaten fresh out of the oven or lightl

Some of you had been asking about Kam Do Bakery and when they are opening. I thought I give everyone a little update. We drove past the place today while on the way back from dining out. We saw that the paper that was covering the windows had finally been taken down. The interior looked fancy with chandeliers and all. So the question is: when is Kam Do opening? Well … … they are not opened as yet but from the looks of it, it will be any day now. The insides seems like they are putting in the finishing touches with some people working on the lightings. The place looked really fancy - quite unlike any Chinese bakery shops around. Apart from the chandeliers, there are lighted panels. This is strictly a take out bakery as there are no space for tables and chairs. I was hoping at least they have small tables for some pastries with some milk tea, like a Chinese version of Starbucks or something. They have some specials lined up.
