Fantastic place amidst the usual burger joints..!
We were pleasantly surprised with this bistro especially when we didn’t see a lot of crowd at this place. Most other bars and pubs on this street just serve the usual burgers and pizzas but this place had its own little touch and not to mention a fabulous presentation for everything we ordered!! Right from the breads to lasagna!
Oh also, the servers (boys) are pretty cute and welcoming too :)
My SO and I were staying at Hôtel du Vieux just upstairs and decided to give this restaurant a try one dinner. What we love about this bistro is that most other restaurants in Quebec City tend to serve the same few dishes (burger, fries, etc), whereas Bistro hortus offers dishes freshly made from local and organic produce, and it focuses on serving healthy dishes with French twists. Its menu also has quite a few vegan/vegetarian dishes. We ordered organic vegetable stir-fry (pearled barley, curd cheese, vegan black garlic gravy) and vegetarian lasagna made with "ferme manche de pelle," arugula salad, and chemin hatley cheese. Both dishes stood out amongst all the other meals we had in Quebec City. Will definitely return during future visits.
Nice bistro located in Old Quebec. Amazing food and great presentation. Friendly staff. We enjoyed a fun dinner here last week on their terrace. Nice menu selection for all palates.
Since we are from out of the area, we decided to sample the Quebec cheeses and ordered a charcuterie which was plated with a chutney, some fruits and vegetables, as well as sauces and crackers. It was actually a very pretty dish in addition to being tasty. We also enjoyed a goat cheese salad made with local vegetables and a walleye tartare with a blackberry sauce.
The gin and tonic with violet syrup was yummy, as was the local beer on tap. We will definitely return here.
The presentation and ingredients were top notch, but I found it hard to enjoy my dinner as the entire plate lacked salt. I ordered the filet with the black currant sauce. There was no salt on the table and this felt like the type of restaurant where you don't insult the chef's seasoning approach, so I tried to push through it. The roasted vegetables on the side were perfectly cooked, they were not mushy, but again - flavorless without some salt. I'm pretty sure there was none on the dish at all so the entire plate was sweet on sweet.
Sitting at the patio to watch people around, French onion soup delicious there have 4 different type of local cheeses, and we have a nice local charcuterie & cheese board!
