We have only ever ordered take-out, and its always been great! No complaints, always hot and rarely do we have to wait more than a minute or two from the pick up time! Order about 8 times a year for the last few years!
I went with my boyfriend and his family. The service was fantastic, however my boyfriends family are regulars (to the point where they get a special discount) and we are Chinese, so the treatment might be different for others. The food was pretty good but nothing too special. Generally, might return if I'm feeling Chinese food but wouldn't go out of my way to get it.
A family style ran restaurant that is decent for its dim sum and traditional Chinese dishes. It's not the best if you compare it to Toronto food but it can help your fix especially with the lack of traditional Chinese restaurants in Ottawa. I have not experienced the same service let down as previous reviewers but I usually go there with my husband's family (who are Chinese) which may help with ordering.
This was our first visit to Golden. We had dim sum on a Sunday morning. It was fantastic. Everything was hot and fresh. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Love this place. Will no longer drive downtown for dim sum. Perfect addition to Barrhaven :)
I would say without a doubt that the negative reviews are the competition. I was with my mom and sisters twice and both times the service is A+, very friendly staff when you get them talking, and the food is amazing. Best authentic Chinese since the days i lived in Toronto... great location, food, service and prices.. A++++
We were a party of five. The food was excellent with large portions. I'm not sure why some reviews are negative. The service was OK, not overly friendly but certainly not rude. We have been back a couple of times.

Very nice owners and staff, best Chinese food in Barrhaven. My family and I go to this restaurant very often and it's always very hit or miss. One time I went there for dim sum and it took 1.5 hours to get our food (it was just the 3 of us, we were the only customers) but you have to understand that it was 2PM on a Sunday. They don't usually have a lot of customers at that hour (it's different from downtown).
I believe the owner is from Vancouver and she gets help from her Uncle. They are always very nice to us and try to do what they can to serve us. This restaurant used to be a Fratelli (Italian Restaurant) so I'm sure the kitchen is probably too small. It's very difficult for them to serve a lot of dishes at the same time. Chinese food is different from Italian food. A family 4 can order 5-6 dishes.
Take out can be very slow. They will quote you for 30 minutes but it could take 45 minutes. 45 minutes could take an hour. I don't think they're ever on time.
Sometimes I do go there for dinner or dim sum with my family and their food and service is so good that they could beat out any of the Chinese restaurants in China town.
Overall, this is still hands-down the best Chinese restaurant in Barrhaven. In Chinese, there's a difference between a cafe/fast food and a restaurant. This is definitely a restaurant and serves good, restaurant quality food.
The last decent Chinese place in Barrhaven?. Wasn't sure where we were getting our Cantonese-style food fix after New Hong Shing got new management, but Golden Restaurant in the Riocan Marketplace, near the LCBO, allayed my fears. All the same flavours you'd expect from classics like a General Tao, Peking Duck, ginger & onion lobster, or egg drop soup are here. The service is friendly, and the wait times are no where near as excruciating as when we ate at the old New Hong Shing.
I don't get the dislikes. When the place is packed with Chinese families, it can't be that bad. And it isn't bad at all!
The moment my significant other and I entered the restaurant we received the royal treatment, even though it was our first visit.

Golden Restaurant has the best Chinese food in Ottawa. We've tried a lot of Chinese restaurants in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto and this restaurant has some of the best Chinese food we've ever eaten, hands down! We've tried the egg rolls a couple of times and we never had any problems with the food being frozen - they were always hot and crispy. But if you like authentic Chinese food, this is it. The food is always very fresh, hot and flavorful. The staff is very friendly and the service is exceptional. We recommend the Deep Fried Squids, Shrimps and Scallops with Pepper Salt, the Deep Fried Chicken, Szechuan Shrimps, the General Tao Chicken and Hot and Sour Soup. The Dim Sum is also excellent. We recommend the Deep Friend Eggplant, Deep Fried Squid, the Sticky Rice Bowl and the Fried Donuts Wrapped in Rice Noddle. If you go there for dinner during peak hours (e.g. 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm), expect to wait 15-30 mins to get a table and the service would be slower; but it's totally worth the wait. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anybody who likes to eat real Chinese food.
