A diamond in the rough. Basic place on a slightly run-down street in Vanier, but don't judge a book by its cover.
The food here is quite different from the 'typical Indian' (read: Punjabi/ North Indian cuisine) served at most Indo-Canadian eateries. The lunch buffet is a great way to sample a number of items, at a very affordable price.
The owners are are Bengalis and their cooking reflects a mix of Bengali and North Indian styles. While the obligatory tandoori and butter chicken make their appearance on the buffet table (can't avoid these, I suppose), it's the vegetable curries and appetizers where their traditions shine through. The chicken and beef curries are not-too-rich but provide a depth of spice and flavours reminiscent of home-cooked Bengali meals. Finish up with the sweets (home-cooked and medium quality IMO) or soothe your palate with ice cream from the freezer nearby (included in buffet price).
The owner and his wife are friendly and happy to offer suggestions to the un-initiated. Not a fancy or posh eatery by any means......... just a decent place for some home-cooked spicy foods. Enjoy!!
This is our favourite place to order Indian food in Ottawa! If you prefer sweet dishes, I recommend the chana masala or the bengul bhaji. If you like spicy dishes, then the chana bhoona is a definite recommendation. The naan is always hot and fresh and the 20+ times we've ordered from here you can tell it came straight from the tandoor. Other favourite dishes are the saag aloo, onion bhaji, and vegetable curry. Great vegetarian selection.
We recently started ordering from Golden India with UberEats - what a great find! The food is always fresh and delicious, the byriani is awesome. Highly recommend it.
