this is our go-to place for great sushi. staff is nice, food is always fresh and delicious.
Sushi Umi serves up consistently excellent sushi—best in the city, with several delicious vegetarian rolls.
Fantastic chirashi don. Probably the best sushi we've found in Ottawa after more than a decade eating it only in Vancouver. Wonderful tender fish, well-seasoned rice, and nice presentation. Tempura appetizer was good but nothing special. Will be eager to go back.
Best sushi in Ottawa for sure! Always fresh perfect textures and flavors. Try the yaki gyoza for something unique and delicious, the tako yaki is awesome too!
Best sushi in Ottawa! I can't wait for my weekly treat! the service is awesome and the location so convenient. Give it a try and you won't regret it!
I visited Sushi Umi after a long morning of moving boxes ( we are almost done!!) with a friend. The restaurant wasn't busy at all and was nicely air conditioned which was amazing after a long walk in the sun. We sat down and looked at the menu. A few specials written on a chalk board caught my eye but I wasn't in the mood for something that heavy. I ordered the bento box which came with miso soup, teriyaki chicken, rice, salad, 2 gyoza pieces, and 2 California sushi pieces. Everything was to my liking but nothing really stood out and the portion was quite small for 15$. I enjoyed the lovely ginger citrus vinaigrette that came with the salad. My friend chose the full dynamite roll(8pieces) with avocado, tempura, shrimp, masago, and spicy mayo. She was pleased with her selection and commented on the freshness of the fish.
She was still hungry for dessert so she ordered the banana tempura with a scoop of mango ice cream. I asked[stole] for a bite of the ice cream and it was the best mango ice cream I had ever tasted. Velvety smooth, rich, creamy, with an explosive real mango taste.
As for the service, the waitress was quite friendly and helpful but was a bit on the shy/awkward side.
I recommend this place if you are in the mood for quality sushi without the overload of calories from an all you can eat.
Neighborhood restaurant , had several takeouts , today we ate there . Not the greatest , don't mind spending money for quality , this was a disappointment ! Too much $ for what we had . Would rather spend this kind of $ at Wasabi!! Our consensus was not to return !
Very enjoyable. I like this little place, the food is good and the prices are reasonable. He won't sell sub-standard fish so some items will be unavailable on very rare occasions - which is better that than the alternative. The ordering process is pretty novel, using an online process on my smartphone. All in all its pretty much what you'd want in a small hole in the wall sushi shop.
I've been to sushi umi maybe a dozen times, probably more, I love it, totally unassuming, but not to be mistaken with your typical neighborhood-mystery-fish-sushi-joint that are all too common. This place is legit. Where they lack in decor they make up in freshness of fish. And in my opinion the prices are very reasonable, especially at lunch. Anyone who says otherwise should go to hokkaido sushi and indulge in their all you can eat barf buffet. Only $20? Wow! With that being said, the only criticism I have of sushi umi is that there is maybe some consistency issues, out of the dozen+ times I've been, maybe two times i was disappointed because something was off (sub-par rice, bad tempura). Not horrible, just not as good as I know the chef and owner can do and has done most other times I've been there. Overall, love sushi umi!
Great sushi! One of the best.
Consistant, quality sushi everytime. I am never dissapointed. Straight forward menu, and thoughtful presentation in a quaint, informal setting. The interior is more reminsicient of a cafe than a typical restaurant ambiance, but still cozy and inviting. Regardless, this sushi is fabulous. I was pleasently surprised by how flavorful their veggie items were, but I love all things salmon, espeicially here.
Awesome Fresh Sushi. Fish is always so fresh, the rolls and nigiri are nicely put together, the owner(s) are always super nice, service (time it actually takes to make the sushi) can be a little slow, but most definitely worth it. I've been to some of the more expensive sushi options in town and they were not as good as Sushi Umi. Lunch and dinner deals (set combos), in my opinion, are awesome and priced fair considering the quality. I recommend the salmon and tuna nigiris*, they're always fresh and always delicious. Also, try the sushi nachos*, which are salmon tartare on tempura battered sweet potatoes, they are excellent!
Yummy but I doubt I'll wait 45 minutes for take-out sushi again.
It was snowing so I came in for hot tea, tempura and seafood miso soup. Excellent soup, the tea was kept hot and full, and the tempura was tasty! Small restaurant but has a wide variety of sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, udon soup etc.
Great service, delicious food, and very friendly and welcoming. Nice cozy spot to sit down and enjoy some authentic sushi.
An amazing spot for those who love a talented and invested chef! Great night out with friends, call ahead now and book! Fairly priced and standout staff!
Amazing sushi we left 100% satisfied! 10/10 would recommend
