Review Sushi Umi - Ottawa

Ben Gooley
Be careful when you order online, if you order the Wellington combo it will add a dollar charge on for no reason. Staff had nothing to say about that other than "it must be a glitch"... Yeah one scamming people out of money.

The place is very small, be prepared to sit close to other clients. The sushi are very tasty and fresh but the portions are too small for the price. Ordered the family special for 3 people and left hungry.

It was snowing so I came in for hot tea, tempura and seafood miso soup. Excellent soup, the tea was kept hot and full, and the tempura was tasty! Small restaurant but has a wide variety of sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, udon soup etc.

Great service, delicious food, and very friendly and welcoming. Nice cozy spot to sit down and enjoy some authentic sushi.

An amazing spot for those who love a talented and invested chef! Great night out with friends, call ahead now and book! Fairly priced and standout staff!

I ordered the dynamite roll (8 pcs) for $9.50. On the menu is says that it comes with tempura bits with addition to shrimp tempura. There was no sign of tempura bits in the sushi roll. When I emailed and sent them a photo of it, they reply with " I see little tempura bits in your picture." There were only shrimp tempura and no tempura bits. I didn't even feel any crispiness because the sushi itself was so small in general. If I'm paying $9.50 for 8 pcs of sushi I want to at least see CLEARLY whatever is said to be in the sushi to be in the sushi. That is the least they can do. Maybe if I used a microscope I'll see some tempura bits that were probably just fallen in there by mistake. Will never order from here again. The sushi itself wasn't terrible, but not worth it for the price.

Worst sushi I ever eaten! We ordered 2 combos and 2 giuza dumplings for 60$ so it's very overpriced. Sushi was very bad and not eatable , actually Feld like a scam.

Amazing sushi we left 100% satisfied! 10/10 would recommend

Sushi Umi serves up consistently excellent sushi—best in the city, with several delicious vegetarian rolls.

This is our favorite spot to go for sushi. We first went there 4 years ago. Loved it from then on.

Super disappointed at what was once our sushi place of choice. Ordered two party platters and I could have just gone to Superstore for the quality I was served. Sashimi was not fresh, Rice was most definitely not today’s, rolls falling apart, nigiri rice is so tiny that the fish slides right off, quantity was a straight rip off, wasabi stank like it was forgotten on the counter and everyone was having the worst heartburn afterwards. To pay over $160 for two adults and four kids for mediocre sushi is just wrong. We will not be returning.

Fantastic chirashi don. Probably the best sushi we've found in Ottawa after more than a decade eating it only in Vancouver. Wonderful tender fish, well-seasoned rice, and nice presentation. Tempura appetizer was good but nothing special. Will be eager to go back.

Best sushi in Ottawa for sure! Always fresh perfect textures and flavors. Try the yaki gyoza for something unique and delicious, the tako yaki is awesome too!

Best sushi in Ottawa! I can't wait for my weekly treat! the service is awesome and the location so convenient. Give it a try and you won't regret it!

Decent sushi if you're in the area, however over priced for what you're getting. The blue crab roll had odd chunks what were way too chewy so I would not recommend ordering that. The atmosphere is cozy, not much room to dine in.

Sushi was a little bland but I really enjoyed the sushi pizza. The shop was really cute and clean; I liked the atmosphere.

It was my first time trying takoyaki and it was really flavourful. Looking forward to trying others.

I visited Sushi Umi after a long morning of moving boxes ( we are almost done!!) with a friend. The restaurant wasn't busy at all and was nicely air conditioned which was amazing after a long walk in the sun. We sat down and looked at the menu. A few specials written on a chalk board caught my eye but I wasn't in the mood for something that heavy. I ordered the bento box which came with miso soup, teriyaki chicken, rice, salad, 2 gyoza pieces, and 2 California sushi pieces. Everything was to my liking but nothing really stood out and the portion was quite small for 15$. I enjoyed the lovely ginger citrus vinaigrette that came with the salad. My friend chose the full dynamite roll(8pieces) with avocado, tempura, shrimp, masago, and spicy mayo. She was pleased with her selection and commented on the freshness of the fish.
She was still hungry for dessert so she ordered the banana tempura with a scoop of mango ice cream. I asked[stole] for a bite of the ice cream and it was the best mango ice cream I had ever tasted. Velvety smooth, rich, creamy, with an explosive real mango taste.
As for the service, the waitress was quite friendly and helpful but was a bit on the shy/awkward side.
I recommend this place if you are in the mood for quality sushi without the overload of calories from an all you can eat.

We really wanted to like it..... After hearing from several people that Sushi Umi was a great sushi place with the freshest fish, my husband and I had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately, our experience here was so poor that we will never return. The service, although friendly, could not seem to handle the very small seating area as well as people coming in/calling in for take-out. People were being told to sit at tables with dirty dishes and the poor server/cashier/cook seemed scattered. We ordered take out (which was supposed to be ready in 20 minutes, but was more like 30 minutes), but decided to have a beer while we waited for it. After waiting for 15 minutes for our beer with no explanation (which I found out that he had to change the keg while multitasking with take out orders/cooking/taking payment/etc), our beer was served to us warm in very sticky glasses. We finally received our take out order and headed home to (hopefully) have a great sushi dinner. These rolls (we ordered 4 different ones) were the smallest we have ever had from any sushi restaurant and the taste was just average. Our entire experience was so poor, and I know they have been around for awhile, but my husband and I will not be on their list of faithful followers and will not be returning.

Neighborhood restaurant , had several takeouts , today we ate there . Not the greatest , don't mind spending money for quality , this was a disappointment ! Too much $ for what we had . Would rather spend this kind of $ at Wasabi!! Our consensus was not to return !

Good sushi for Ottawa. We ordered the large party platter and various other sushi dishes for takeout as we were having a large get together.

The sushi was all top notch, the fish was fresh and everything tasted great - we also had the udon noodles which were made well and being Vancourites, we couldn't help but to be impressed with the sushi.

The rolls were suitably sized. You're not going to get big pieces of tuna here, but the salmon, mackarel and red snapper sushi was all well proportioned.

Overall, an excellent sushi experience in Ottawa.

Very enjoyable. I like this little place, the food is good and the prices are reasonable. He won't sell sub-standard fish so some items will be unavailable on very rare occasions - which is better that than the alternative. The ordering process is pretty novel, using an online process on my smartphone. All in all its pretty much what you'd want in a small hole in the wall sushi shop.

I've been to sushi umi maybe a dozen times, probably more, I love it, totally unassuming, but not to be mistaken with your typical neighborhood-mystery-fish-sushi-joint that are all too common. This place is legit. Where they lack in decor they make up in freshness of fish. And in my opinion the prices are very reasonable, especially at lunch. Anyone who says otherwise should go to hokkaido sushi and indulge in their all you can eat barf buffet. Only $20? Wow! With that being said, the only criticism I have of sushi umi is that there is maybe some consistency issues, out of the dozen+ times I've been, maybe two times i was disappointed because something was off (sub-par rice, bad tempura). Not horrible, just not as good as I know the chef and owner can do and has done most other times I've been there. Overall, love sushi umi!

Disgusting. I have been to this place previously (it was terrible, both service and food) and have returned in hopes that it would have improved since it is so close to my house.
To my disappointment nothing has changed except the low class decor.

To top things off, the place is very unclean and the sushi looked like my 2 year old made it.

I will NOT be returning and I highly recommend people to go elsewhere.
It is a waste of money.

Great sushi! One of the best.

Consistant, quality sushi everytime. I am never dissapointed. Straight forward menu, and thoughtful presentation in a quaint, informal setting. The interior is more reminsicient of a cafe than a typical restaurant ambiance, but still cozy and inviting. Regardless, this sushi is fabulous. I was pleasently surprised by how flavorful their veggie items were, but I love all things salmon, espeicially here.
Morphomercedes
Ho hum. I really truly wanted to like this place. I ordered a sushi platter and specified vegetarian. To my surprise there were a few rolls with crab and something that resembled fish. Also, the rice was not at all seasoned. I might try it again in the hopes that this was a very off day for them.

We would have been better off getting sushi from Loblaws. I hate Loblaws' sushi.

Food is good, not the best sushi, but not the worst. Service was terrible! The server did not give us plates! We asked for plates to prevent from having to reach across the table... no follow through! She was distant, didn't ask how the meal was, no refilling of water... A better takeout place than eat in!

Awesome Fresh Sushi. Fish is always so fresh, the rolls and nigiri are nicely put together, the owner(s) are always super nice, service (time it actually takes to make the sushi) can be a little slow, but most definitely worth it. I've been to some of the more expensive sushi options in town and they were not as good as Sushi Umi. Lunch and dinner deals (set combos), in my opinion, are awesome and priced fair considering the quality. I recommend the salmon and tuna nigiris*, they're always fresh and always delicious. Also, try the sushi nachos*, which are salmon tartare on tempura battered sweet potatoes, they are excellent!

Yummy but I doubt I'll wait 45 minutes for take-out sushi again.

Sushi good, service slow. Went for lunch the other day. As per usual the sushi was good - fresh and well made. but the service was sloooooooow. Took forever from when we ordered til we got our food. Don't book an early afternoon meeting if you are planning on lunching here first.

Really yummy terriyaki dishes! And very nice owners and waitress :) quick service and great seasoning on their food.

My favourite sushi in Ottawa. We moved to Ottawa and weren't sure where to start in finding good sushi. But, we happened upon this place and were completely impressed with the freshness of the sushi and the options for someone who is gluten-free. They even had GF soy sauce at the restaurant. We are now regular customers - more than 2-3 weeks without it and I need more!

Satisfies My Sushi Cravings. I've been a regular customer for over a year now and the restaurant has greatly improved in terms of food quality, ambiance and service. The sushi is always fresh and the chefs prepare the rolls with close attention to detail. Whenever I dine-in I sometimes receive orange slices/desserts as a treat after my meal, which is much appreciated. The restaurant is small and doesn't have many tables, but it can accommodate large groups - just try to avoid Friday nights when they're most busy. Lastly, the service is wonderful: I am greeted with a smile the moment I walk in and the server always checks up on me during my meal. Chris, the owner, is friendly and loves to talk about his passion. The prices are reasonable, but for the quality it is definitely worth it! I don't eat at AYCE sushi restaurants that often anymore ever since I discovered this gem in Wellington West. :)

Fresh, Delicious Sushi!. First of all, MamaKat (who wrote the review below) sends back food at every restaurant just because she doesn't like it. I eat there and speak to the owner all the time and can assure that the restaurant always receives fresh fish of the highest quality. The owner and staff are very friendly, and the sushi there is just amazing. With options that cater to everyone, including those who don't eat raw fish, are vegetarian, or can't consume gluten, they really do make the tastiest sushi in town. I've tried many sushi restaurants in Ottawa, but nothing beats Sushi Umi! My favourites here are the tempura yam roll, dynamite roll, citrus roll and yummy roll - delicious!
MamaKat
Very disappointed - I got past the crunchy rice sticks in my microscopic sunamono. I got past the odd shape of the sushi, which unbalances the proportions. But I could not get past the spoiled ikura, and the manager's(owner's) attitude toward it ('if you do not like it...'I do not think I will be back.

Plain gross. I may have to give it another shot, but there is nothing worst than bad sushi to put you off. Rice was soggy and mushy, also ened up getting stuff we did not order. Just gross.
Lets hope it was a one time thing.

Bad Quality. Tried this little place because I had heard it was a good place for sushi... not the case! The fish wasn't fresh and one of the worst California Rolls I've ever had (and how do you mess that up?). Overall, it just wasn't fresh and I agree with the comments of overcooked rice. I'd much rather go to Sushi 88 for some great, fresh sushi.
Stephanie Major
Might as well get your sushi at the grocery store. Rice was way overcooked. Would not go back again.
Travis C
Amazing sushi, only topped by the staff. All are great and Chris is extremely nice and willing to adjust your rolls for you. Highly recommend!
Irene
Gooey rice in sushi. They overcooked their sushi rice. It made the sushi all mushy. Huge no-no.

Very good!. We are new to the Hintonburg area and recently discovered Sushi Umi. We have been there many times since the 1st as the sushi was one of the best we have had! Every time we go, we get great service from the very humble staff members. Excellent prices and excellent sushi!
Jclau
Great sushi. I visit this place a lot... they take their time to make proper authentic sushi, which is always fresh. i've searched awhile, and this is amongst the best sushi in the city.
Benjamin Willis
Very good, try their citrus roll-salmon mango mushroom with lemon shavings

Not in Westboro. Sushi Umi is a long way from Westboro -- it's actually in West Wellington, part of the historical Hintonburg.

Food is very fresh and delicious! I loved it, but don't bring more than two friends. There are few tables

Very small dining room so don't come with a crowd. Prices were OK... service good but very slow.

Although we found the soup too sweet, the packaged noodles were cooked al dente. Mine contained a generous helping of seared chicken, while Don’s bowl was complete with shrimp, scallop, and mussels. While this was not necessarily the most authentic bowl of noodles, it was very warming on a cold winter night.
