Highly recommend this restarurant, very typical Korean food, their customers mainly are Korean. If you are Asian, go there is a good choice to try real korean food. If you are not Asian, you might prefer the one next to it, called Maru(western-style korean food).
The korean sausage soup is good. Small space so there's always a line, especially during typical meal times. Bit on the pricier side but of all the korean sausage soup places, this place is pretty legit.
Bit of a weird building. There’s actually above-ground and below-ground businesses. South Castle is the place right in the middle of this photo, between Weeds Glass & Gifts (cough) and Coral Court Szechuan Cuisine. Horizon Spa Massage and MiMo Hair are actually downstairs. If you drive by, you might miss this restaurant because the English name isn’t very prominent.
This is what I'd imagine real korean soondae tastes like. My korean friends took me here and I can not forget how good it tastes. The atmosphere is pretty gloomy but with friends it was fine. Definitely coming back.
Can't wait to go back!. My Korean friend took me here and got me hooked on their soup. So delicious!!!!!!
Perfect After Your Day. This restaurant is... used to be a "real hidden gem" for Korean crowd in Vancouver when it opened, cause their menu was "new" for Vancouverite at that time. Today, yes, the restaurant is still a "mom & pop joint" or as they say a "hole in the wall eatery," but South Castle stays a crowd pleaser. Even after the restaurant went through ownership change a couple of years ago. Now on to them menu!
My absolute favourite is non-spicy Soondae-guk. And a bottle of Soju usually for myself and me company. Soondae means pork blood sausages in Korean and they are tasty enough to satisfy most of non-Korean people who are wary of adventurous dishes. Its taste comes off very closely to spicy cured pork. And to Koreans, you should know the soup is the great match for Soju. Inexpensive and fantastic to wash off your day with a glass of Soju. You got yourself one great time with your buddies. Recommended.
Not for the weak.. This Korean restaurant is perhaps the most popular Korean restaurant in Vancouver to Koreans. Like many restaurants in Korea, this restaurant only serves a niche type of food. Organs and of particular choice, intestines.
Whether you decide to get the soup or the fried hotplate, it will likely be very spicy and if you cannot eat spicy, I wouldn't even recommend eating here. If you enjoy spicy food and don't mind the ingredients, you must try this place.
The quality of this restaurant is comparable and even exceeds some of the same type of restaurants in Korea. Ask your Korean friends, they'll know.
Also, they do have an English menu.
I've been here couple of times. I'm Korean and this place's soup is even better than those in Korea. Like the staffs and food; I don't see many caucasians here, but some of my white friends love bi bim bap and bulgogi.
Full, round, delicious, authentic flavourful dish.....although this description paints a perfect picture of my yummy slim yet curvy Korean gf, it also describes the famous black noodle soup dish this restaurant serves.... If the food looked as hot as my Korean-yummy-honey-horizontal-boom-boom-screamer, this place would have line ups out the door. Funny how boom-boom and food always collide with me. Anyways, gf said the soup was as good as Korea if not better...the bragogi was the best I have ever tasted, and I have lived in Seoul for 3months. Also, I met many Koreans who wined and dined me.I even had one who's mama wanted me to marry her daughter and felt stuffing me full of delicious Korean food would add to the persuasion.SOoooooo,I have eaten a lot of Korean ;) and no what good Korean food is. This is some of the best you will get folks! The menu is trim with about 10 items because they focus on quality not variety. This is a common practice for quality restaurants in Europe...so no big deal.To sum up: South Korea Castle is some of the best Korean home cooking I have had inside and outside of Seoul....authentic..authentic...authentic 9/10 food, service was gracious and satisfactory 6.5/10, decor was simple minimal but the place looked clean 6/10. Xox
