I'm loving the melt-in-your-mouth cookies from Laleh Bakery that a Handsworth student brought me as a Christmas gift at school today! The box is brimming with a variety of delicately flavoured morsels.  (One or two less off the top now!) I'm going to dole them out to myself, one by one (or maybe two by two) over the holidays.  Thank you, dear student!  It was a sweet and thoughtful gift.

A friend if mine dragged me here but I'm so glad she did!! As soon as you walk in you know you're somewhere amazing. There is just so much variety and it all looked so new to my palate.

There was even a lovely lady in the store that explained what was in each pastry and what she loved best. She didn't even work there :)

My friend got the walnut flour cookies stuffed with cream and dipped in chocolate and the almond flour cookies stuffed with cream. She's celiac. I'm not gonna though the almond flour cookie was the best thing I've eaten cookie wise in a while.

I got something called the tongue, a baby baclova (it was so cute) and some sweet saffron pastry. The baclova was a bit rose water flavored for me but still good. The tongue dusted with pistachios was just layers of crispy pastry but super simple and yummy and the sweet saffron was not as sweet as the lady had warned but we'll worth it.

Go here!!

Piles of Persian pastry!. I was making hummus at home -- my trick is to heat the garbanzos along with za'atar, a Lebanese spice mix, then peel the skins so you get a lot less gas -- and I wanted some Middle Eastern bread to go along with it. I thought Laleh might be a bread bakery. When I walked in, I saw it's a sweet shop -- not that there's anything wrong with that! Their products are more cookie-like than baklava-ish -- dough is the main focus, nuts less so. I got a small box of various types. They were fresh, light, colourful -- they're gonna be great with coffee! Italian-style coffee, though, not Turkish. And I did get one of those canoe-paddle-sized Iranian flatbreads to go with the hummus, too. Main course and dessert covered!
