First time Trying Yaas Grilled Chicken and Lamb on Skewer. it is my favorite dish to date! I was personally afraid to venture out of my normal order of Kobideh. Happy I got out of comfort zone and tried the Chicken~!

As you are probably aware, North Van has a significant Iranian-Canadian population and therefore some great Iranian food is to be had. Scout Magazine's "Never Heard Of It" list has a couple of these places listed and we have been intending to visit Yaas Grill House. Apparently, Yaas has been heard of by now. They have 2 outlets just a few blocks apart. We stopped at the first one that we spotted and I'm not sure if it is the original outlet or not. Just off the freeway on Lonsdale is a convenient location. We started with an eggplant dip (they were out of the smoked eggplant) with pita and some house-made pickles. This was the best pita that we have ever had. They make it in house and it has some beautiful char and was hot and perfect! Also amazing was the eggplant dip (could have used some salt) and I am not sure what the specific flavours in the pickles were but they were also excellent! The ground meat skewers were as expected. Nicely charred and served with very good basmati rice, grilled tomato and a little side of sumac. Number one on the menu is a bargain and a winner. The Sunday specials both had sour cherry rice on the side. I had never heard of this but was immediately convinced that it was critical to my life experience! And it was amazing as you would expect! After lunch, we walked up the road to a Persian grocery to buy sour cherries and I have tried to recreate this since then! The Sunday special offered lamb shank as one main. This was fall-apart tender and tasty! At $15 this is a smoking deal. Come here on Sunday for this!
So the lady who took our order was not too friendly but she had a neck brace and probably should have been home recuperating. Food was delivered to our table wordlessly by another server and we got the feeling that we were not such amazing customers. No sense being judgemental though as we don't know what is going on in their lives. The food was great and the value indisputable.
I was stuck wandering around North Van for a few hours so obviously, Persian food for lunch was on the game plan. I tried to go to one place originally but they were permanently closed. Instead, I tried Yaas Grill House. I dropped in on a late Saturday afternoon (around 1:15pm). Surprised to see it was busy and steady. You order at the counter, get a number and then your meal is brought out to you. If you want water, grab a glass by the utensils/takeout boxes and fill it up yourself.
Real good for what you pay. This is a fast food restaurant so don't expect the restaurant service, Zeytoon is down the street from it but same dish costs $8 more. Selection is great.

This is how it works.
Find a table first even if you have to wait. Go up and order your food. Once you finish paying they give you a table number. Make sure you grab utensils and napkins at the front, this is a self serve place. If your table is dirty just wave a server down to wipe it. If you need a box and bag for left overs it's located in the back on the metal shelf rack, just help yourself.
Make sure you say thank you, even greeting them in farsi can make that difference, cause my plate was way bigger then the guy next to me LOL. I grew up on the northshore so I picked up farsi quickly in elementary school and high school. Embrace the culture and you'll know what I mean.
8.99 combo with rice and lamb is so moist. The rice is so fluffy. Can't go wrong. They have cheaper items each weekday too. The one thing that threw me off was a bottle of siracha sauce at the table. I thought my girlfriend pulled it out of her purse LOL. For a second it reminded me of East Van. Other then that, no complaints here. The food is decent and prices are fair.
Just so your aware, if your not comfortable with tight spaces, and your also not vocal or social, you may find this place to be very rude. Just be positive, greet in farsi, speak loud BUT FRIENDLY, and you'll be fine. They will take care of you. That's the culture. I'm not Persian btw, I'm Chinese, and my girlfriend is Vietnamese, and she's picking up quickly.
This is a fast food Persian joint style, don't expect a true Persian experience. It's service is on par with fast food Chinese style.
Food is good, they always welcome in Persian and continue in Persian. Opps, are we not in Canada?
Any minor modification to your order jumps the bill up. The selection is great, it is not all about kebabs but others things that you should sometimes try.
It's pretty cheap. Some daily specials are only 5.95. Big plate or rice (or Naan I saw).
Taste-wise, not spectacular but it's not bad. Great spot for a big, cheap plate of rice.
Yaas Bazaar. Yaas Baazar continuosly offers great Persian Kebabs and food at great prices. The new location and management has improved both the service and atmosphere of what is a staple restaurant on Lonsdale.
The Saffron Kebab is the juicest selection and the fava bean rice is always great.
If you are looking for fast, yummy and always fresh, Yaas is the benchmark for Persian Food lovers!

Miserable service. Yaas' service is horrible. The owner and his family are extremely rude. You can find much better food for better prices and without the attitude.
