We purchased takeout as we always have Chinese food for birthdays. Love that they have gluten free options so I can be included in the meal. Also love the coupon for free chicken fried rice.
It was Saturday evening and we were in Newmarket, hunting for dinner. At some point we ended up in front of Cynthia's Chinese, and we decided to venture in. The first thing that struck us was that all the staff were dressed in "traditional" Chinese clothing; ornate silk dresses and jackets. I confess I don't know what traditional would mean in this context, but it did give a more formal air to the dining experience.
We started the meal with some Hot and Sour Soup. It did not take long for the soup to arrive. The small bowl of soup was presented in an interesting brass globe-like serving "thing". Our server rotated the top of the globe downwards to reveal the soup inside. Something new for us. The soup itself was good, in my opinion. A bit more sour than the average hot and soup soup. SWMBO was not as keen about the soup.
Then on to our main courses. A server brought us Beef and Broccoli, and General Tao Chicken. The beef dish sat atop a different style brass server, and the chicken dish had an interesting "flower" at one end, made from very thin slices of carrot. The server was going to start dishing out the food, but I had to ask to do it ourselves, so that I could take pictures first! Both dishes satisfied our tastebuds.
Service was excellent. One server in particular engaged in pleasant chatter. Also, various staff brought food quickly or cleared empty dishes promptly, and checked how we were doing along the way. A very nice meal.
Wonderful Place. Now, for chinese food you could say this place is rather expensive, but you're not getting bean sprouts, fried rice, and egg rolls. This is authentic chinese food, cooked well, served well, and priced well. The restaurant is clean (which is not the case with so many chinese restaurants in Toronto) and the service has always been good. I have been going to Cynthia's for more than 15 years and can honestly say I have never been disappointed. General Tao Chicken and OK Beef are more than OK. Chicken with crispy leaves is good, but can sometimes be a bit salty. King Prawns in garlic butter sauce is excellent. Very good food, very reasonable prices.
