Montréal is popular for dumplings! I suspect due to its geography, northern Chinese cuisine gained popularity in Chinatown. Mai Xiang Yuan is one spot. It resembles a hole-in-the-wall on street side, but its dumpling logo is can’t-miss.
We tried a plate of 15 steamed dumplings (lamb & cilantro), along with a platter of 15 fried dumplings (pork, cilantro & shrimp). The plump steamed dumplings were flavourful with lamb juice, even before dipping in vinegar/soy sauce. The thick handmade wrappers were just ideal for such traditional dumplings. The fried dumplings were served with a crispy bottom layer, and included decent amount of pork & shrimp. However, the latter was a bit greasy so we left stuffed.
Dumpling portions were quite large at reasonable prices. Note the store is cash only, but provides an ATM at the entrance if you’re short on cash. Staff were sure to inform guests this was a no-cash / no-service establishment!
Homemade dumpling, good quality. Typical China town vibe, not super new and clean. Food serve fast. The dough slightly thicker than some of other place. The steam one is very juicy. The boiled one surprisingly good, too. This place is CASH only so please prepare.
New address (used to be next door) as good as the last one. Only point tho, the porc crabs used to cost 12$ for 10 pieces. Now it’s like 8$ for 4 pieces AND they changed the recipe, not worth it any more, not very good. Used to be my favorites 🥲 The rest is still as good 😊
