Sometimes the best nights are the ones you don’t plan for. After an caterer tasting felt through last minute, my fiancé and I found ourselves looking for a late night weekday dinner option. After looking through my ‘to-do’ list, we decided on a quick drive over to Beaubien street in Saint-Edouard at Restaurant Gus, ready to see what chef David Ferguson had in store for us. Formerly of restaurant Jolifou further down on Beaubien (now the crazy popular Chez Régine), Chef David opened up this small bistro-sized restaurant a few years ago now and has truly made it his own in style and cuisine.

Loved my experience at Restaurant Gus. A tiny little restaurant tucked along Beaubien street , right outside of Little Italy. Its full of charm and life. Loved the white wine that was suggested to us - a white called Supernova, Muscat D'Alexandrie. It was actually orange and foggy-looking with a light muscat wine note but it was dry - not sweet. I loved it and asked for the name although sadly, it is a private import and therefore cannot be found at the SAQ.

The service was friendly and attentive.

Our food was outstanding. We started with a doz oysters, one of the best salmon tartares my husband and I have ever had and we shared the super-delicious Surf n' Turf for two which was comprised of a USA prime steak served with seared scallops and grilled shrimp over a bed of mashed potatoes and a butter sauce. We ended the evening with their decadent chocolate cake with a sort of cream cheese whipped topping and loads of powdered cocoa on top. :) It was heavenly. Even the espresso was great! I cannot wait to go back. Little tip, if you are a party of two, I highly recommend sitting at the counter, its where all the magic happens. Loved it!

2 words: yam marshmallow casserole. ok, that's 3 words. and that's all you need to know besides you need to sit at the bar. that's where magic happens.

ps. the stupid hot sauce wasn't THAT hot! ok, the sweetness (raisins and sugar) toned down the heat

I had heard about Saint-Édouard’s Restaurant Gus due to it being constantly listed in enRoute magazine’s Dining Guides over the past few years (Dining Guide 2013, Dining Guide 2014 & Dining Guide 2015). They describe themselves as a “little steakhouse” and the word little is quite accurate. A reservation is certainly a must because of the restaurant’s tiny size.

We arrived for our visit on a Saturday evening and the first thing that I noticed was the restaurant’s adorably small space. It felt like a secret little spot that only those “in-the-know” are aware of. The front window was open wide to the street, letting in plenty of natural light and fresh air. The rest of the room is decorated with red paint, chalk board menus, and a bar with many bottles lining the shelves. It felt comfortable and quaint, like a true neighbourhood spot.

Our friendly server was extremely informative and took the time to describe every item on the menu in great detail. This is the sort of place where you will never see the same menu twice, as it is always changing. I ordered a Lemonade to drink. Perfect for the month of June! I really liked the tangy sweetness due to the evident use of meyer lemons. Refreshing and summery!

I had heard a lot of talk about their caesar salad with reviewers going so far as to say that it’s the best caesar in the city. This obviously caught my attention and my husband and I shared the Caesar Salad ($14.00) as our appetizer. We also added on caviar for an additional $5. (Please note that they serve foie gras nachos... Which certainly sound intriguing!) Everything about the salad was made fresh, fresh, fresh in-house. In fact, they boast that the dressing is made to order for each individual salad. At first glance I certainly appreciated the heaping amount of caviar, which seemed to be of excellent value for only five extra dollars. We dug in and I marveled at the salty spiciness of it all. I assume that they are making their dressing by using anchovies and raw egg yolk and I only wished that there had been more of it, as I found the dressing to be quite light-handed. The bits of capers, crispy pork, and especially with the addition of the caviar upped the saltiness quite a lot, which is not a problem for me. The croutons were buttery and delicious, however I only got to eat one of them because there were so few in the salad. I liked the spicy kick provided by the accompanying peppers, a component that made this caesar different from others. Was it the best caesar in all of the land? I’m not so sure.

When it came to the main dishes, several of them caught my eye. I really liked the sounds of their lamb, I saw someone at a nearby table eating the horse tartare and it looked amazing, and of course the surf & turf for two seems like something that must be experienced. My appetite wasn’t particularly raging on this evening, so I opted for the Lobster Salad ($18.00), which is actually considered one of their starter dishes. This was a beautiful and bright plate bursting with fresh summertime fruity flavours. The perfectly-cooked lobster was a generous size and paired excellently with the buttery avocado. Matchsticks of mango and dots of pear puree added a lot of sweetness. Decadent and oily, it was a simple dish, yet very well executed with it’s combination of perfectly matched flavours. You can’t go wrong with this lovely (and surprisingly hearty) salad!

Gus was a nice place. The portion sizes were large and the ingredients used were of high quality. I’d like to return to sample a lot more of their menu and especially to try some of their meatier plates.

Surf and turf and deserts are orgasmic. Very nice ambiance with jazzy music and open kitchen. The waitresses are very nice and explain everything. We took some Cava as apéritif and then the Surf and Turf with some Médoc. Food was amazing!!! We then had the deserts, which were even better....

Best fudgy chocolate cake with Baileys cream cheese frosting is beyond superb. Had it three times so far, two out of the three were just amazing. Anybody who undermines the value of Gus' chocolate cake is plain wrong.

If you don't like the service (because you didn't like the way the waitress handled customers at another table because people were waiting in line), sitting at the bar seems like a good idea.

Great food and atmosphere. Warm and inviting, four of us had a wonderful evening of taste sensations sitting at the bar, enjoying the caesar salad, beef steak mains with perfectly paired wines. Lemon tart finished a memorable meal. Great fun watching and chatting with the staff as they create dishes with flair.

Great food and amazing service. We had heard many good things about Gus from friends of ours who are repeat customers so we decided it was about time to give it a go and wow - this place is great! Such a nice small space. We sat at the bar and were basically served by the chef - he was so nice! We started with the caesar salad with lobster and caviar - delicious, especially those chillies. We then chose the lamb and pork - both outstanding and the portion sizes were very generous. Super service and great food. We will definitely be back.
