I really am a big fan of California Sandwiches. These sloppy messy sandwiches are the perfect lunch when you plan on doing nothing for the rest of the day.
This one in particular is located along an industrial strip with nothing around but trucker diners and stops. Right off the 401, California Sandwiches has found this small spot where people can gather (and they damn sure do) for lunch. Not a quick one though...
I enjoy getting the "breaded meat" sandwiches. What I mean is the veal and chicken as they are thinly sliced and breaded meat that is layered onto your sandwich to give it that full look that will make your eyes well up with tears of joy. The sandwich itself is good, but what makes it, is the complete sloppiness. The breaded veal and chicken are dipped and soaked in their tomato sauce. Then thrown into a kaiser bun and though some toppings are extra, you MUST get it with provolone cheese. That is the glue that holds the sandwich together and gives it that "oomph". Everything else like onions, mushrooms, and peppers are entirely up to you.
Do yourself a favor and stick to the sandwiches. Other items like the pizza and panzerottis look decent enough, but there's no way you go about turning down their sandwiches. If you're looking for a quick lunch, stay away as lines can be quite long. You can also do yourself a favor and call in advance. Meal will cost you under $10
The sandwiches still taste good but are expensive and the veal is hammered paper thin. The secret is the amazing tomato sauce. It's a must have for sure, but not what it used to be.
Mmmmmmmm good.. Been a customer for over 35 years and the sandwiches are really the best thing i have had. The portions are more than you ever imagined. Love the veal and chicken with mushrooms. When you walk into the store, the smell is so inviting and tantilizing. The staff are always open and friendly. Wouldn't eat anywhere else. It's worth the visit. Satisfied and full.
